Oh well yeah. Xenosaga II is awful and by no means better than FFX or X-2.

Most Xenosaga fans and gamers alike think Episode 2 sucked. It is by far the biggest case of Executive Meddling in a series I know about.

Xenosaga Episode 1 and 3 however are definitely better in my opinion.

Not to completely derail the thread, but it's a series I wouldn't recommend to people who hated the kind of uber-serious, cutscene heavy plots of Final Fantasy.

If you like that stuff but not necessarily Final Fantasy, it's probably a good series though.

My problem with the Xenosaga series isn't the uber-seriousness, but rather the fact that they try to treat the subject matter and plot as deep and intellectual when there's so much juvenile crap about it. In other words, for me, it fails the Rule of Cool and dives headfirst into What Do You Mean, It's Not Awesome?.

The big Wall Banger for me? KOS-MOS. I'm sorry...I don't give a damn how much power your walking, monotone Sex Bot has. The fact that "she" walks around in a leotard and high heels has broken Suspension of Disbelief for me. Broken it, urinated, defecated, soaked it in gasoline and burned it, laughing the whole time.

...kind of an odd statement from a poster with a Megaman avatar, another series known for creating overly feminized robots.

  1. The original series doesn't take itself seriously. Which (as stated above) is my core pet-peeve about Xenosaga.

  2. I wanted Mega Man to be my avatar, but every pic of him I could find is "cute". X is close enough.

  3. Even if the above were not true, it could be entirely possible for me to dislike Xenosaga for the qualities above and overlook those qualities in another series where story/characterization are not the main draw.

I pretty much gave up trying to justify outfits in Japanese anime or anime-like games.

As longa s it looks good, I'm happy.

Honestly the worst costume in the series is Episode 3 Shion. They totally skankified her and it pisses me off.

Though Episode 1 Shion's look was really nice because, in comparison to other Japanese heroines, her costume was pretty modest. Plus she wasn't even that beautiful or attractive. I know people who thought she was downright ugly. I myself think of her as nerdy cute in that game.

Oh, I used to have Xenosaga episode one... But I don't think I ever finished watching it.

We talking about non FFX RP Gs now?

Go for SMT Nocturne. Unless you hate difficulty, or non-heavyhandedness.

I love SMT, but we've already got a dedicated thread for gushing about that series.

Xenosaga episode 1 is one of my favorite games. I tried episode two and, like most people, was all D:

never did get around to buying episode 3, something I must remedy someday.

Incidentally, FFX is also pretty high up on my favorite games list. Not sure what, if anything, they have anything in common, but there ya go.

I've been told Episode 3 was the game everyone wanted Episode 1 to be...but if you hadn't played Episode 1 or 2, it made little sense thanks to the Continuity Lockout.

This thread has also reminded me that Xenoblade hasn't been announced over here yet and I AM ANGRY

Yeah I beat 1 got about 1/3rd of the way though 2 before I gave up and I do have 3 but gathering the will to finish 2 is tough...

Anyway we have majorly derailed this thread. Maybe we should start up an RPG general discussion thread? Or just rename this thread?

I don't even remember him telling Rydia and Rosa specifically to stay home while letting the other men join him. I do remember him trying to leave behind several if not all of his team, but I thought that was just him doing the ignorant "I gotta do this alone" hero thing. If he did excluse Rydia and Rose because they were women, that is pretty stupid. And I'm glad that they stuck it to him for it if that's the case.

Several characters in Final Fantasy VII did something much similar to even Cloud's just "going it alone", that Yuffie wouldn't understand it because she's a woman. And Yuffie rightly called them out for it. One of the first times I've literally heard the word "sexist", called out in a Final Fantasy game. It's also unfortunate post Final Fantasy VII the original, they game both Tifa and Yuffie some significant badass decay. I was thoroughly upset with what they did to her in Dirge of Cerberus. And by the way, I enjoy that game much more than most people, and have played it several dozen times.

As for Fabul, they're divy was appropriate, because they WERE healers, they logically, as knights siding with and protecting the kingdom, need to look at things from a political-tactical viewpoint. Their job is to keep Fabul safe, and that means healing and keeping alive as many people as possible. They simply wouldn't be as useful to the situation, and Cecil was basically relegated to an elite knight. The party did get trounced, but what's best for the party wasn't appropriate then, it was what's best for Fabul.

I'm ten or more hours in to my Final Fantasy X game that I started yesterday. My goodness, do those Save States help with spending less time beating the Luca Goers! I beat them 2 to 0 in less than 30 minutes!

Let's not forget another importance of Tidus being a main protagonist to the role, the Fayth plot twist wouldn't have near the effect if someone like Tidus weren't there to dramatize it. And it makes the second playthrough a whole lot different knowing it.

Apologies for necroing such an old thread. I asked about this on the page quote discussion thread and was advised to come here.

Is the page quote for The Necrocracy a spoiler for the game? I feel that it is, since the the character being quoted is the subject of a reveal about there actually being Unsent in the church and thus qualifying for the trope as one of The Undead, implying that the character speaking qualifies for the trope when the information that they qualify for the trope is clearly meant to be a secret, and the transmission of that information is treated as a reveal in the game proper.

If I've posted this improperly or made it hard to read (or anything of that nature, really), feel free to inform me and I'll try to fix it as soon as I can.

Kinoc doesn't specify who is dead. He's making a statement that can be interpreted but you don't know who or what exactly he's talking about without knowing FFX's plot.

Still, it's a pretty big twist in the game that Mika is dead. It exposes the entire Yevon religion as corrupt to the core.

Does a Necrocacy have to be out in the open? Because Mika being dead is a big secret, as you noted.

It’s not mentioned in the trope description, so I assume not.
