This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Can I talk to a Mod that isn't blatantly ignoring the fact that I have repeated on several occasions that I FORGOT that I had edited the page in the exact same way in the past and that I had made an innocent MISTAKE, please? Someone that has the common sense to understand that people don't have perfect memory, and are liable to make mistakes and shouldn't be suspended for what is clearly and obviously an innocent mistake?

I will admit. That |technically|. I am Edit Warring. That the 'Third Edit', where I made a change to the page that I had previously made but had since been reverted. Means that on a purely TECHNICAL level, I am Edit Warring. However. Taking into account that I made the first change TEN MONTHS AGO. And I have repeatedly said that I FORGOT that I had made the first edit in the first place. The fact I was suspended at ALL was clearly done in Bad Faith. With the Moderator who suspended me not giving me a chance to explain myself once the issue was brought to my attention.

~Tempest Fury: Another moderator here. I could add that you were deleting examples without leaving an edit reason (well, in some cases), but you actually removed some of them three times. You've made less than 70 total edits on TV Tropes and were suspended for edit warring quite recently; one would expect you to be more diligent, but alas that's not the case.

Given your belligerent response and the fact that you're only here to give your opinion on Star Wars characters, I think we can safely say there's no loss in permanently banning you. You've got some kind of personal issue: I don't know what it is, but you can go work it out somewhere else.

Hello, i'm StephenAlexis, and i would like to request for the lifting of the temporary ban i got due to the Editing Wars regarding Supermarioglitchy4s Super Mario 64 Bloopers.

I know i'm only making some major edits to the pages and i'm aware of others making edits out of my edit, which i don't mind at all, but because of my inexperience with TvTrope's rules and regulations (In fact, i've learned of it after i got the ban!) and perhaps some poor choice of words on my part, i got the ban myself.

Mods, i swear to whatever deity in existence that such an incident will never happen again!

~laar2002: I'll ask again.

~Idumean Patriot:

  • Mostly the "don't be a dick" rule. Writing giant walls of text defending a contentious work is being a jerk.
  • I dunno, I'll ask.
  • First, you need to be fairly sure that the information is actually false/defamatory. Lots of people confuse "it's factually false" with "I don't agree". Then you can go to Ask The Tropers or the discussion page.

~The Lucky Cat: Well, yes, 13 notifiers for Example Indentation problems is a lot. You also keep readding entries other people have removed with no discussion even though you were already suspended once for that sort of thing.

~Spice87: You know, what do you plan to do if we lift the forum ban? You only ever posted to that thread and did not make a good impression, but there is an entire forum out there.

~DD 44 Handgun: I am looking at it and I don't see that you addressed this comment since your reply is basically a hand-wave.

The problem with your edits is that most people who do such edits are here with political axes to grind, and we don't want that here. And I can't find much support for the claim that "[Antifa is] group that has been convicted of numerous crimes, including violent ones" which is another problem.

~Stephen Alexis: Well, you should probably have mentioned that you used a sockpuppet to fight out the edit war because that's a big rules violation. I am not sure that this kind of ban is temporary at all. Also, your file says that you have grammar problems, which is why the lack of proper capitalization in your post bothers me.

It wasn't my intention to comee off as a hand-wave, but I will say that the edit in question is an appropriate one: I believe that trope has a time limit that was not followed, and the article itself by someone with their own axe to grind. The other comments, about a created page, I think the mod was under the impression that is was written that climate change doesn't exist, which is really not in any of the pieces: The issue was a person disliked by the fanbase for being whiny, committing B&E, and being forced to side with her on it. The fact that she's an eco-activist doesn't change that.

Septimus Heap,

Thank you for responding. As a comment, I think I should once again wish to make clear, I have been "defending" the work only in the sense that I have been discussing factually false, and/or defamatory allegations that fan haters have tried to bring into its page(s), and sometimes attempted to show in detailed arguments how and why they are false. None of my posting in these contexts has been arguing for its own sake over its quality or such.

However, if the moderators believe my posting has nevertheless been inappropriate, I will of course try to take that message to heart. My only excuse is that I was not aware of this implicit rule against long discussion posts. I have felt that in order to make my point, it has sometimes been necessary to write at some length.

In the case that brought about my suspension, I was responding to posts by the troper Shtovak that were longer than mine, and it would have been very difficult to address his posts without my own growing as long as they did. In fact, while I didn't know about this ruling, for reasons of good style alone I did specifically try to keep my posts as brief as I could while still engaging with him. I regret that they were nonetheless too long.

So as to avoid similar mistakes in the future, are there guidelines on what are the acceptable limits on a discussion page post?

I will await further instructions as directed.

Damn, 13? I was made aware of two of them because somebody messaged me about it, but then when I went back to correct the problem, it had already been done so I couldn't amend it myself. I'm a little unclear though, with the Obey Me one I listed two separate examples, so I thought that needed two different bullet points, same with the Post-Birthday World entry, since one was about Lawrence and one was about Irina. With the history thing, should I just include an explanation every time I add a new trope to avoid confusion in the future? I sometimes write down an entry I've thought of, then get distracted/change my mind and don't post it, then I revisit it later and do post it, so sometimes I think I've just typed up an entry without actually pressing "enter" instead of realising someone deleted it because I forget that checking the history to see if I already added it is a thing, so I'm sorry about that, I definitely do not want to start any edit wars.

I was rather surprised to be told that reusing the summary that an author has, presumably, carefully crafted and vetted, and uses to market the story, as the trope page summary, is plagiarism. To my way of thinking, it's just being courteous and respecting the author's decision about how to briefly describe their story.

The author for whom I created the page found that decision weird, too, when they came across it.

I'll certainly bear it in mind with future pages, though, if it's okay to unlock my account? (And is there some way to demonstrate authorial permission to copy content?)

I was just suspended again today. I posted an apology for an argument on OTC that was entirely sincere and was accepted by the posters, and I wasn't trying to start anything. Can we talk please? I know I shouldn't have been so rude, but I wasn't trolling. I let my frustration bubble over in my writing and it was wrong of me, and I genuinely feel horrible about this, not because I was disciplined, but because I portrayed myself in a really ugly way and lashed out. When I apologized, I had already regretted my position and I meant what I said: I was frustrated, but I was genuinely upset how at how I came off during the conversation and wanted to make things right.

After sleeping on it, it's been eating at me this morning and If I could recant my statements during that conversation, I would do so, but that's not really an option anymore.I wish I could take back what I said in a general outpouring of frustration that aren't representative of my views at large, and I feel really ashamed that I blackened the discussion in a community that I value a lot. I know there's a bitter lesson here about not writing or saying something that you'll regret later, and it's a bitter one to swallow. I shouldn't have posted what I did about shoving journalists and ordinarily, I wouldn't post anything like that, but I felt personally insulted by what I felt was a biased and hypocritical Ron the Death Eater-esque treatment of a public figure that was one of my own, and because it was a result of criticism from the hard left and the right, I felt, I dunno, squeezed out. That's on top of the general strain of pandemic isolation amid the final stretch of graduate school, and I just blew it. I know that everyone has a personal excuse for why they behaved badly, and I know that doesn't excuse my behavior. All I'm saying is that I didn't post anything with malicious intent and didn't sit down that night thinking that being an asshole was my ultimate aim, even if that's how it turned out. I could have vented elsewhere, cooled off, and posted something good, but I didn't. I should have argued civilly, but I wasn't thinking clearly at all. I should have taken a step back, gotten my head on straight, and thought better of it.

I know I've exhausted a lot of good will already, which is why I'm honestly a little terrified even making this post, but I wanted to explain myself. Years have passed where I was a frequent and perhaps even valued (I hope) contributor on OTC, and I'm deeply sorry I wasn't like that last night. I remember the conditions we discussed last time, and I'm kicking myself over it, because I took it seriously in the years since, and I haven't gotten into a single scuffle over what those previous corrective actions were about (the Star Wars discussion threads); I genuinely learned my lesson and I think I did a turnaround. I've never, ever been suspended on the Off-Topic forum, and the thumps there are extremely rare. This incident was anomalous to my usual discourse on that thread. In another context, if you asked me about the freedom of the press, I would have said "Yes, I support the freedom of the press, and no one deserves to get shoved just for asking a question" and if you asked me in isolation about the withdrawal of the Tanden nomination, I would have said, "I'm disappointed, I think she's highly qualified and her online behavior shouldn't shut out a great bureaucrat from government work, but what's done is done and I just hope Biden has a worthy alternative in store." It just came out like a geyser exploding. I got sort of just primed by arguments I heard elsewhere that whiffed of misogyny, racism, and hypocrisy, and that fused with ongoing frustrations over American news media culture and the hypocrisy therein, and I teed off when I shouldn't have. Genuine criticisms or counterpoints that would have given me pause were ignored, and I made arguments that I wouldn't dare to if I had calmed down. Was it worth it? Absolutely not; because of what it led to and because ultimately this isn't the realest stuff anyway and it isn't worth getting so enraged over. And if anything, if I had just talked about why I was frustrated from the start, based on the views on everyone in the thread, it probably would have been understood completely and that's part of why I really regret my behavior. I came off as someone even I would want gone, if the normal, cooler-headed me were looking in on my behavior.

This community has been a part of my life for eleven years and though we don't know each other more closely, it's a valuable part of it. For the past three years, I didn't get into fights, I didn't lose my temper, and I reminded myself of it every time I felt like I was going to say something stupid. Tuesday, I did something super, super, stupid. Within a couple hours, I apologized because I immediately regretted it, but it's hard to take back what you say and even harder to take back what you write. I know that I basically need a miracle, and that you guys probably think everyone will be better off with me out of the picture, and let's be entirely honest, I can't pretend that what I wrote was in any way constructive or stands in contradiction to that assumption. I know I broke a serious rule, and one that the admins don't take lightly, but I'm still appealing to you for another chance. Can you please consider it?

Remember, folks, we don't use PM's to contact you about your bans. The conversation stays here, in this thread. Anyways...

~tfrench1463, I was informed that you were shoehorning some fanservice-y tropes to an underage character. That is not okay.

~hiro9796:

First of all, did you copy-paste that appeal from another person here? Not cool.

That aside, you are here because your grammar is not up to par. Grammar mistakes leave messes that others have to clean up. You'll have to run some examples you'd like to add through this thread.

The rest of you, please be patient. We'll get to you all in a moment.

~tfrench1463 — and that absolutely can happen.

We have lots of Zero-Context Examples and Pages In Accidentally Miscapitalised Namespaces, but rather than letting new editors add more things that break policy, we need the userbase to police those sort of things and alert new editors and the moderators. We have to take underage sexualization slightly more seriously than ZCE, but either can get you suspended. The suspension is to make sure you're aware of the policy so that you know what to do. If you'd like to engage in a cleanup of the mistakes others made that caused you to misunderstand a policy, that would be even better! We got a LOT of flak for examples that overly sexualize fictional characters and there's still a few edits from the days of Troper Tales that need cleaning. The point is that we want to make sure you agree to stop it.

Cleaning up other people's messes is appreciated, but not required.

First off, it was me having "typing lags" that's the cause of the grammar errors (That, and having to look up for actual spelling of some words to prevent such errors!)

Second, the "StephenAlexis" account(s) fiasco i have? That's admittedly my fault, because it was back when i haven't tried editing my profile page.

Hello. I've been suspended for using a conversational style, which is inappropriate to the tone of the pages on TV Tropes. Thankfully, I don't often edit large enough portions for the style issue to recur, and I *am* working to get better about this. May I please be reinstated? There are some spelling and punctuation errors I'd like to fix, and I can't do that while suspended, after all.
