Go To

This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

I didn't know Tangled's Fridge page needed a discussion. All the other Fridge pages I came across didn't need any discussion or given reason for editing. People just edit them. Over half the stuff in Tangled's Fridge page just looked too irrational to me and little too obvious and didn't look like a true Fridge Brilliance, and that's why I removed them.

If Tangled's Headscratchers and Fridge pages need a discussion or reason given for removing stuff, then okay, I'll do that. And the previous mistake won't be repeated!

I'd like to edit again.

Others would post many times in the thread without there seeming to be a problem. As I understood it this was allowed if it was relevant information. Apparently my genuine efforts to help were seen as trolling, and after discussing it went nowhere I went to Ask The Tropers for consensus.

I'm happy to allow the mods to act in whatever way they like, without criticism, if I can be allowed to edit again. Is there anything I can do to make up for my actions?

Wereworld: I thought it might be something along those lines.

Fridge pages are subjective. That's why they are segregated from the core wiki. As I understand it, pulling entries because your sense of what is "true" brilliance differs from another troper isn't on.

That's not so say that there can't be good reasons to pull material on those pages. This thread discusses what do with Justifying Edits and natter generally. It suppose there could be cases where something just isn't supported by the work — a reaction based on stuff that is demonstrably wrong. But that's possibly not what you mean by irrational? I'm getting a bit out of my depth there because of my inexperience with Fridge stuff.

More generally, all deletions deserve thought and caution — it's good practice to always give a rock-solid edit reason when deleting anything. That's a general thing — all pages, not just the Headscratchers and Fridge space.

When you see something you've just pulled reappear, first thing to do is to check the page history to see what the story is. Hopefully the replacing troper will have left a note explaining what the dealio is, and/or an invitation to discuss it. Again, this is why good edit reasons for deletions are particularly important: they can stop problems before they start.

Natter. Example Indentation.

  • But Not Too Black
    • Not the fact that the target audience is mostly a demographic that may not have cable? The dvd and blueray sales are STILL high.

Natter. Example Indentation. All capitals. It's DVD and Blu-Ray.

Many minority groups has attempted to counter this by circulating info about missing people whom are other then pretty white females through avenues like social media. Such as tumblr, Facebook, Stumbleupon etc.
On closer inspection page is already a useful note jammed into a trope article and is unusually focused towards real-life politics as opposed to a fictional trope. The issues don't start with your addition. I'll retract that one.

  • Shows up in Resident Evil 2 where you open a unassuming door (in a save room no less) and zombies shambles in. If your not expecting this bricks will be thoroughly shat.

Shamble, not shambles. You are (or you're) not your.

Dear mods! First, it's Kaze Koichi, not Kaze. Are you trying to show your point by being rude?

Second, do I have a chance to explain myself? During RP, Anno R and Raineh Daze was trying to provoke me into a flame war. Regardless of my opinion on the game, I do not think that stalling the game by flaming it is a right thing to do. That is why I wrote about my displeasure and explained reasons for it on their contributors pages instead.

Third, the contributors often use a term "vandalise" refering to contributors page edit, and they don't get banned for "vandalise" edits. Please excuse me for confusion between this term and a term you are using.

Finally, as you sharply noticed, the problem was RP-related. Why I was locked from everything else? I couldn't care less about not being able to edit contributors pages, I didn't do it before the incident and have no plan to do it again even if I'll be allowed to. After some time, I would forget about this and would never speak with those tropers again, if I wasn't reminded. But I never did anythind offensive on the trope work pages, so why blocking me from them? Why blocking me from not-RP related things? This was my first offense, and it doesn't related with this wiki's purpose at all. Can you just give me a warning and open trope pages for me?

Kaze Koichi (no rudeness intended, I usually call people by their "first names"), I'll review the events in the RP prior to your ban, but actual userpage vandalism - by which I mean defacing or leaving personal attacks on other user pages, not lighthearted "vandalism" - is not something we tolerate here.

And there is no such thing as a namespace-specific ban. You vandalised a page on the wiki, so you've been banned from editing the wiki, and I have no intention of lifting this ban.

Oh hay, a personal attack on the troper who reported you. This was not in any way a daft idea and will certainly help your case.

On examination, it looks like not only were you out of line in Anno's RP, you have a history of acting up in RPs. So no, I will not be lifting your edit ban, I will be banning you from the forums as well.

What happened? Why can't I edit? If it's about me sounding sassy or something on the Disney Princess page, I didn't mean any harm.sad If it sounded rude or something, then okay, I promise no more sassy or snarky answers.

Wereworld: So. I gave you another chance after explaining that you must know what you are doing when deleting anything, and strongly suggesting to you that providing a well-based edit reason every time if you do delete something. You go straight from having your suspension lifted and delete two things you should not have — while not giving an edit reason.

Specifically: nuking both the Image Pickin' tag and the quotes directive from Yandere. I'm not going to offer a third chance.

How come I was blocked from editing? I'm trying to think of anything I might've done to warrant it, but nothing comes to mind. The best thing I can think of is that maybe I accidentally made a bad typo or something, but naturally I wouldn't know of any off the top of my head.

Wereworld, you've already had two chances to edit properly. You've blown both of them. Camacan just said he's not giving you a third chance. Not, "He's not giving you a third warning", he's not giving you a third chance.

To be honest I don't really know the ins and outs of this site too well, so I might be missing something on that page you linked me to, but nothing under my name seems to be troublesome at all. I just got a PM though explaining that apparently some of my edits apparently either removed external UR Ls or spoiler tags. I don't know if it's true or not, but if it is, then it's definitely accidental. Sometimes I can get a bit careless with my typing and maybe accidentally make an error. If so, I'm sorry. Even forgetting the problems that can come from mistakes like that (and believe me, I'm as big of a grinch when it comes to spoilers as anyone else), I have a very firm stance against editing others entries, because even if something doesn't make sense to me, it likely made sense to them and maybe I just missed something that they didn't. And if not, there's an entire section of this site devoted to determining whether or not it belongs.

So again, if I did do something wrong, I swear it was purely accidental, but I'm still sorry anyway. I have too much fun adding entries to articles when I see them in something I'm watching or playing (and I'm on a big How I Met Your Mother fix, so I noticed a bunch of things that could be added to that page) to do anything purposefully that can screw it up.

Well that's a problem, because you are screwing up the markup.

This is what we had:

  • Also, his flamboyant behavior and tendency to describe how he's feeling foreshadows that he's her opposite.

This is that you changed it to.

  • Also, his flamboyant behavior and tendency to describe how he's feeling foreshadows that [[ her opposite]].

We've got a preview button right next to the commit button for making sure your changes are correct before posting them. I'm more than a bit worried that you seem not to have at least had a good look at the page after the changes were made — the problem isn't at all hard to spot.

We've also got documentation about the markup. Welcome To Tv Tropes pulls a lot of the introductory information together. Text-Formatting Rules has the word on making links. The Wiki Sandbox is a a spot to play around in. Handling Spoilers has notes on both spoiler markup and how they are used texturally.

Take a week to really study all the documentation. Look at some pages that interest you and their source code and get up to speed. Come back in a week and I'll give you a second chance.

I do know the markups. That's not really the problem. I've been pretty good in the past about using correct markups. And though I may not always use the preview button, at the very least I always check the entry after posting it. Maybe it's not the wisest thing to post first and check second, but it seems like 99% of the time I do spot any mistakes I might've made. As for what happened that time, I honestly have no idea. I don't even know what would've gone through my head to make that particular change. All I know is that it had nothing to do with any misconceptions about markups. I've been coming here for a few years now (I'm a bit hazy on any particular length), and I've made countless additions, so I've had quite a bit of experience with markups. And with the exception of sometimes forgetting to put the and around words like "UR Ls" (as you may have noticed), I'm very knowledgeable about how to use them. And if I'm confused, I always make sure to check the markup help.

I'm sorry, but the idea that you know the wiki's markup is demonstrably not true. I asked you what was wrong with the edit and you could not tell me — in fact you thought it was fine. I cannot agree with you that isn't the problem. It is the problem. If you're sure that your editing doesn't needed to change then I'm not going to lift the suspension.

I also notice that what gets removed looks like it may be the work of an auto-remover: external urls and the spoiler markup are vanishing in your edits. Are you running some kind of auto-remover add-on or the like?

I suppose this is the place to ask why I'm not able to edit anything. I think I have some idea, and if I'm right I object to the moderation's overreaction on the matter but I'd like to hear it from Eddie before I jump to conclusions and/or start screaming incoherently at people who may or may not deserve it.

On the rest of the site maybe, but fanfic recommendations are opinions; rather than having separate pages for comments that entire wing of the site should be on the YMMV header. As it stands, large swaths of the recommendations section ignore the review feature altogether, probably because nobody wants to have to open separate tabs for every fic just to get second opinions about them.

  • Edited to be a bit more diplomatic.

We don't want thread mode pages for the fan fic recommendations. This has already been settled on. If you can't agree to to it, then you'll need to post your opinions elsewhere.

Who is "we", Eddie? You and the administration? Or just you? Because the people who are actually posting in Fan Fic Recs say differently. Perhaps you settled on it, and I get the message (though I sure as hell don't like it), but if you want that rule to be obeyed then you need to enforce it when everyone else breaks it. Right now it's only being enforced when people like Kuroi Hadou whine to the moderators about mean men saying bad things about a fic they like.

Have fun smashing all the other commentary in the recs section. I'm just going to grab a bag of popcorn and watch the show when dozens of angry posters swing by to yell at you for screwing up their wing of the site. Somehow I don't think they'll care what your rules say.
