This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Such hateful opinions are not welcome on TV Tropes.

I'm not sure how this is meant to be hateful. She-Hulk was a very positive person in the comics, had no issues with men and treated Bruce with respect to the point that she perfectly understands his situation. The She-Hulk in the live-action show was nothing like that, as she is very confrontal. I tried to be as neutral as I could.

Goodness me have I been making mistkes left and right. Are these better @Macron Notes

From Allegory: Encanto:

  • Mirabel can be seen as an allegory for somebody born with a disability, as she doesn't have any magical powers unlike the rest of her family. As a result, she feels excluded by her family and patronised by the community despite this not being their intention at all. Indeed, many disabled viewers found that Mirabel's trouble with self-worth mirrored their own experiences.

This cuts down on the unnecessary detail(s) of the extra special gift basket. It removes a sub-example that does not need to be there. Additionally, I feel it gets the point across of what I was trying to make: That being patronised and/or excluded by the family and the community.

From Trivia.Code Lyoko

Unintentional Period Piece: The Anime-like artstyle as well as the fashions, computers, CD players, soundtrack, and old fashioned cell phones places the series within the Turn of the Millennium.

I think adding the "more students have cell phones" might actually be better for Values Dissonance instead - simply because in the 2000s, it was more common to see French or Italian children with phones. it also removes what should be two points, and unnecessary discussion on main. This makes it much more to the point.

From Base-Breaking Character.Big Brother

  • From the US 24:
    • Kyle became very polarising with the main point of contention being his paranoia over there being a race-based alliance in the house. This is viewed by some as racist, others view it as justifiable considering the Cookout.

With future revelations, this makes it much more to-the-point and avoids commenting on things such as "These people made it further while not playing". Additionally, this was done after a few revelations as anything about ongoing shows is very much a work in progress.

> ~Tropers/LIES — Your suspension is for both Example Indentation in Trope Lists and Natter (and indeed they often overlap because people can't help but use ** or *** bullets to converse). Which would you like to discuss first?

Let's discuss 'Natter' first, since not doing that might avoid my doing example-indentation in tropes lists. How do I see where I did it—I'm afraid I never saw a warning, and don't know yet how to look effectively.

Thank-you.

@Macron Notes. Oh, that tracks. I don't remember the warning message, but I do know that I struggle to be concise. I'm working on it and and am better at it now, but I definitely was overly wordy five years ago and got into trouble at school for it, too. I really do want to try trooping again and promise to watch my word count and be concise.

@Macron Notes

I've been noticed that I recevied suspension for edit-warring over Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse entry on the page Amphibia: King Andrias some time before.

An edit war is when an troper revert one' content back to original form after another troper changes the troper's added content. It can creates a vicious cycle that not only confuse and mislead readers, but also damage the page's status. It should not be conducted to keep tropers in line of editing peacefully.

I would like to gain permission to edit. Editing gives me a lot of joy in understanding fiction better in a deeper meaning. I got something to say regarding to the incident I've involved:

I want to deeply apologize that I've inconsiusly conduct an edit war. The main purpose of prevent edit war is to avoid unnecessary conflicts and maintain order. To prevent others from posting spams and protect the pages' information from being misleading for others. It also prevent the formation of fierce disputes over the pages' information. But I didn't respect to that. I just do what I think what it's right and didn't think of the potential damage to the website or to other tropes. I promise to do better and make sure to get a better understanding of the website's rules.

If I get to permission to editing again, I'll make sure to ask more tropers' views towards the matter before conducting changes, so that the pages won't be vandalized just because I have different opinions from others. Everyone has their own opinions and has the right to write it out. Thry also have responsibility to respect other tropers' and negotiate with them when an argument comes. I'm ignorant to that and potentially violate other tropers. If I can edit again, I'll notify other tropers when they reverts my edits. Then, I'll conduct conversations with them and reach an agreement that we're both satisfied. In this way, we efficiently prevent edit wars from ever happening.

I've been self-reflected during these past weeks and I know I've given myself a punishment I deserve. I realize that if someone reverse my edits and I don't disagree them, I need to message them and ask them the reason behind this, instead of reverting then back without discussion nor permission. I'll make sure a proper discussion is held and that I will not put back my edits until an agreement is reached. Apart from that, I'll also make sure I'm in line with the website's policies and learn more about them with the help of other tropers and guidelines. I promise I will not make the same mistake again.

I last asked about being unbanned from TLP 4 months ago, and this guide inspired me to ask again, since I intend to use it whenever I make a draft again.

I'd just like to be unbanned so I can more easily help with the TLP Discard project, and take the load off my mind.

Lastly, I think I've learned more and am more confident about saying the bare minimum to get my point across.

I have come up with a better example for Big Guy, Little Guy.

  • Bob is a 6' 4" tall man who uses his size to intimidate others. Charlie is a foot shorter compared to Bob. To make up for his lack of size, Charlie is however smarter, coming up with better ideas compared to Bob, demonstrated by the fact that Charlie's ideas work out the most, compared to Bob's. This makes Charlie hire Bob to be his bodyguard, while Charlie instead uses his own brains.
I feel like this example overlaps with Brains and Brawn.

Was I suspended for constantly adding Hate Sink to Katsuki Bakugo's profile? As one who watched the anime, I personally don't understand why it doesn't apply to him. At the start, he is pretty much a condescending, egotistical, selfish, uncaring bully who encourages Midoriya to kill himself and almost does ACTUALLY kill him during the Combat Training. I do enjoy editing, though I'm having trouble understanding why Hate Sink doesn't apply to Bakugo at first. But if you want me to keep Hate Sink off his profile, then I will.

Getting everyone else from the last page: —- ~Rift Witch Instead of re-adding or re-deleting your entry, you have to discuss it with the other troper and/or the community to obtain agreement or consensus.

Please read Edit War and tell us where you can conduct these discussions.

~Tropers/NOYB — Yes, you're exempted from edit warring if your second edit is to enforce wiki policy (for example, if you comment out a Zero-Context Example and someone uncomments it without adding context, you are free to remove it again without permission/consensus).

However, our exact stands on grammar are found on Tips on Grammar. Here's the bit on possessive apostrophes:

If the noun is singular, it's usually a matter of adding 's. Words that end with an s or z sound can follow this rule, but simply adding an apostrophe with no s is another way it can be done. To avoid debates and edit wars over how to handle words ending with an s or z sound, follow the same "first come, first serve" rule also used for American and Commonwealth Spellings if you encounter one of these words on a page.

~Tropers/Oneofthepack — Yep, discussion pages and ATT are two places where you can get consensus for an Edit War. What are the other options?
~Lavaring X and ~Charles Phipps — Discussion pages are one place you can discuss a contested edit. However as the Edit War page admits, they don't get a ton of traction. What other avenues of discussion do we have available?
~Another Gamer — (Refer to Example Indentation in Trope Lists.)

Do these revisions make sense?

~Truthseeker 2020 — Dude, you're not getting it. And please do not give us super long paragraphs; we don't want to read them. Frankly, on this discussion thread you keep citing, I see you claiming they are attacking you/biased/hate you but I don't see any incivility on their end.

However, your suspension is not about the precise contents of your posts and psychoanalyzing your interactions with the other person. It is about the extended arguing and re-adding/re-removing entries without trying to discuss it with other users. I am trying to make it clear that we do not allow that sort of behavior.

On this wiki, we operate by consensus, not just facts. Your writeup can cite the research of three Nobel Prize-winning scientists, but if other tropers don't think it should be on the page, it stays off.

We understand that the rules of this site have a learning curve. However, your behavior thus far does not read like an editor willing to reach out and compromise, but one still convinced that they did nothing wrong. Now are you going to get with the program or not?

~Duchess Snow

likely after the FIRST time they removed my edit to avoid a problem/edit war before it could start,

Yes, this is when you should start discussing or seeking the inputs of other tropers, and you should not re-add/re-remove the example without consensus.

You've correctly cited "Is this an example" in Trope Talk, Discussion pages, Ask The Tropers, and PM as methods to discuss contentious examples and avoid Edit Warring. You can also use Wiki Talk for wiki policy questions. Some tropes also have cleanup threads dedicated to discussing such examples in the Project forums.

Do you have any more questions about the Edit War policy?

~Synchronicity: They make sense, yeah, and like I said, I don't have much experience in properly formatting quotes like that and I forgot the existence of the —-> tag entirely and it's not listed under the message board markup help either, so the last one was bound to go wrong. Can I get my edit suspension lifted based on those correct fixes so far or do I need to do something else?

I'll go wherever I need to as I don't want to cause any trouble over these things.

I never would have restored it if I hadn't made the mistake of assuming the wrong thing about why it was deleted.

Thank you, Synchronicity. As I described in my Page 1129 comment, the Grammar Tips page only says that as of recently (*very* recently when it happened). For the longest time, since before I started as a troper years ago in 2009, it instead said in no uncertain terms that, "If the noun is singular, add 's. Yes, even if the noun itself ends in s. A fox's tail, the quiz's answers, Jesus's disciples, even my boss's desk." And I'd encountered users who didn't know about that before.

It was changed to the current "first come, first served" rule only two weeks before the back-and-forth in question, and it was completely unexpected to me that it would or even could be changed. Being unaware of the change, I had good reason to think that my reversion of the other user's edits was in keeping with wiki policy as you said.

Although in retrospect I wish I had thought of going directly to the Grammar Tips page so I could link the other user to it, instead of just referencing the grammar rule I knew in my edit reason. If it hadn't changed, I would have been able to show the other user what the rule was for themself. And since it had in fact changed recently, I would have learned about the change and not reverted the other user's edit. I see that the forms of communication recommended on the Edit War page can save time and effort.

I'm gonna make the assumption that I was suspended for rude behavior, fair enough. I do not appreciate people accusing me of things I didn't do and, but I will concede that my response was out of line and accept whatever punishment I've been dealt. I will use the time between now and when/if my suspension is lifted to reflect on my behavior so that this does not happen in the future and learn to not overreact.

In fact, I did miss that. I was unaware that I'd been making excessively long posts, but I will try to be more succinct in the future. If I'm verbose, it's because I'm trying to make clear any points that might be confusing, and I've seen many people complain about ZC Es, so the boundary between that and overly wordy is a bit of trial and error. Simply nudge me if I do so again, and I'll know better my boundaries.
