I don't "get" Dark Side Cave, and I'm content with the current name.
Edit: Wait, hold on a second, you're linking to the discussion page for a trope that's different from the one you made a topic for.

Aw crud, I brainfarted on the topic title. It should be Epiphanic Purgatory. Is there a way to change the topic title, or should I launch a new thread and ask the mods to lock this one?

^Fixed.
For future reference though, the button to change the trope relevant to the discussion can be found immediately to the left of the "see the stale discussions report" command at the top of the thread.

I'm thinking something like This Place Is Evil.
Rhymes with "Protracted."Thanks Sean.
I didn't like Dark Side Cave originally because it just seemed easy to confuse with Place of Power but for The Dark Side, or as a Scary Cave.
This Place Is Evil is part of the trope, but specifically the place is one that tosses your worst fears and failures at you as illusions/real threats.
Good point. Psychological Torment Zone? Cave Of Nightmares?

Rhymes with "Protracted."Eh, nah, that suggests that there's no ethical way out. EDIT: Wait, just checked the actual page. Is Room101 really an example? Really? I guess that it's a kinda warped example, but... he betrays his loved one to escape :'( and so did she.
Gah. I really like Epiphanic Purgatory, if only because it sounds like A Good Name for a Rock Band.

Something about nightmares. Den Of Nightmares, Nightmare Land...
Rhymes with "Protracted."Bump
Rhymes with "Protracted."Eh, I kind of like Dark Side Cave.
This may be Fan Myopia though, as I have played both KOTO Rs.
I'm convinced that our modern day analogues to ancient scholars are comedians. -0dd1When I read this I thought this was a Literal Epiphanic Purgatory such as, Hindu myth and Digital Devil Saga and Angel Beats.
- 1 for rename
I think it's a bad snowclone of Epiphanic Prison which is the trope Raso is talking about. It doesn't make much sense though because the two tropes have almost nothing in common.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickBump
BTW, I'm a chick. There is now a single proposition rename crowner for this trope here.
I agree with Raso that the current name could be confused with a religious idea of purgatory so I support a rename.

Okay, now we've got some more votes.
Rhymes with "Protracted."Given the support for a rename, there is now an alternative titles crowner here. Feel free to add names as you see fit.

Bump for more votes.
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight! One question — does this trope require the psychological torment to be self-inflicted? The whole point of the pagequote / Trope Namer was that the place wasn't evil, it was just a reflection of the person in the place. That's why when Luke asks "what's in there?", Yoda says "only what you take with you".
If the trope is just a general "place that messes with your head", then Psychological Torment Zone is fine. But if it's actually "a place that forces you to deal with your inner demons", then I think we need a different name.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.I don't know if self-inflicted is the right word. I'd think of it as more of a preying-on-your-deepest-fears-and-anxieties-and-stuff sort of thing, and that's the reason it's so effective—cuz it's building on the insecurities you already have. But I'm not sure how restrictively we want to interpret the definition in that regard, and I'm comfortable classifying it under the loose banner of "Psychological Torment" and whatever connotations that carries.
Rhymes with "Protracted."True, self-inflicted isn't quite the right word. But the point is, does the effect prey on some sort of Fatal Flaw, or does it just Mind Rape everyone? The description says "Sometimes however, it can be stopped the moment the victim says "I'm Not Afraid of You" and/or reaches an emotional epiphany", implying that people who have achieved "inner peace" or conquered their Enemy Within wouldn't be effected by it. The proposed new titles don't really cover that — "Psychological Torment Zone" really just implies "place that Mind Rapes people".
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. That's Epiphanic Prison. It often overlaps, but it is a different thing.
Rhymes with "Protracted."An Epiphanic Prison is about something that keeps people captive by keeping them from realizing that they're imprisoned at all. The epiphany that lets you escape an Epiphanic Prison is the fact that you're in an Epiphanic Prison. Epiphanic prisons are usually actually quite nice places, in order to keep people from wanting to escape. Epiphanic Purgatory, on the other hand, is Mind Rape that you can only escape from by having an epiphany about your Fatal Flaw / Enemy Within / whatever.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.
Crown Description:
Previous crowner showed consensus support for a rename.
It was brought up that the new name for Epiphanic Purgatory isn't as inclusive as the old one, Dark Side Cave. It's pretty young, so we can change the name with little confusion.
Thoughts?
