Old Complete Monster cleanup thread
Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.
If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.
IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.
What goes through this thread?
- Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
- If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
- If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
- Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
- If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.
What does not go through this thread?
- New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
- Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
- Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
- If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
- Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
- Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
- Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
- Spelling and grammar fixes.
- Pothole changes.
- Minor rewordings.
- Spoiler tags.
While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:
- Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
- If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
- Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.
Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.
As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

See, I was concerned about that too, but I'm still not entirely clear on where the line is drawn and didn't want to make a fuss about nothing. But in this case, maybe both examples need to be reevaluated entirely.

Yeah, I'm more than happy to reevaluate the examples, looking back it seems they were approved in 2013 so even if by some chance they do keep, the entries are definitely dated and need some updates. Thanks for bringing this to thread attention, War!

For now I am advocating cutting the examples, they both do nothing to convince me that they count, and neither of them seems to pass the baseline, especially for the genre.

About Platt, this is what his entry says:
"Vincent Platt is introduced getting his kicks watching police divers fish out the body of a little girl who was kidnapped, raped and murdered, one of his victims"
The "one of his victims" part as well as him describing techniques, indicates that he probably has more victims than just those 2 described and there is a chance the entry is just horrible at conveying this.
Maybe we shouldn't be so quick to cut this guy before we check how many victims he actually has, but regardless, his entry needs a rewrite.

I checked the original EP, and no there is no other implication of any other victims besides him describing techniques. All the EP mentions is that he has done so before with no elaboration beyond that.
Also, the EP's says that the series of full of Serial Killers, Rapists and apparently he isn't even the only child rapist. Also judging by what the proposer says about their atrocities being played seriously it seems like that the show normally plays this stuff for laughs, which seems to be backed up by the show being described as a comedy.
Okay yeah now unless someone has an extremely good case for these guys counting I don't see any case at all to keep them.

Yeah, reading that page and a few pages after, it seemed like there wasn't much discussion, either. Like, some people responded about the characters, but most were just talking about other things. (Also I can see why the EP format became a thing based on how, uh, that particular post was written...)

Might be a stupid question sorry but I know that there needs to be more cut votes compared to the original (unless it's brand new information like a redeeming quality) but what if there's not enough due to the fact that there's not enough people in general? Some of the usual thread regulars that were common even up to the thread shutdown, I've not seen at all here.

I mean considering how much bigger the threads have gotten I doubt that will ever be a concern, it is an interesting thought though.

Speaking from experience on other cleanup threads, I don't know how much of an issue this will actually be. As long as there's a solid consensus, and the discussion isn't still going, cutting and altering examples should be fine even if the people agreeing to it is a smaller group. If people want to protest after the fact, well, that's what edit reason links are for. I don't know if there really has to be any specific rules about how many votes an example needs to be cut... most cleanup threads only get like 3-4 votes at a time if that.
(I also just don't remember there being discussion on how this thread needs even more votes than before, but I could just be blanking, I don't want to assume anything and if I'm legitimately just forgetting something that was agreed upon, lemme know)

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup thread
Jeez, this entry is horrible for one. It is inflated with a ton of minor non-qualifying details, like him crying about his rights, trying to assault the hero, taunting the hero, bragging about how he is, and how he ends up dying. When you get past all the unneeded fluff all that he has is kidnapping raping and killing one girl, kidnapping another, I guess probably trying to rape her as well, and being an asshole, with one vague line about him describing techniques on kidnapping girls, which does not feel like enough to establish a pattern, and that is it.
The couple War brought up only has a single victim who they rape and possibly more with the entry not making it clear how much they have and the way it does making it seem incredibly vague.
Like am I missing something like these three seem really basic, especially for a crime show where rapes and murders are par for the course and you need like a few extra victims in order to pass the baseline for the genre. Maybe the first guy can get by for being a child rapist, but that is pretty common in this genre as well.
Okay wait now I am reading the page and apparently, rape is very common in this show with female police officers often being on the receiving end of this or an attempted one.
