To-do list:
- Move any wicks and on-page examples that fit Continuity Cameo, Crossover Cameo, or Celebrity Cameo accordingly, and leave any wicks that only fit the supertrope at The Cameo. If The Cameo does not have enough on-page examples for the newly created trope pages (Crossover Cameo and Celebrity Cameo), crosswicking may be necessary.
However, the description also, very vaguely, mentions that fictional animated characters making brief appearances may also count for the trope. Unfortunately, the vague description and broad connotations of the word "cameo" have led to a lot of mixed usage. This wick check of 117 entries displays that the main "correct" usage only accounts for about 20% of the usage. Here's how specific usage is laid out:
- A celebrity briefly appearing in another work : 24 / 117 (20.5%)
- Celebrity appears in the work, just not played by themselves: 3 / 117 (2.6%)
- Cameo from a staff member: 1 / 117 (0.9%)
- A character from the same franchise makes a brief appearance in the work: 41 / 117 (35.0%)
- A different fictional character makes a brief appearance in the work: 19 / 117 (16.2%)
- Appearance from a character by the same author/company as the work: 10 / 117 (8.5%)
- Miscellaneous misuse: 3 / 117 (2.6%)
- Not enough context to tell / murky: 16 / 117 (13.7%)
Or more generally:
- Appearances of real people (whether played by them or not): 28
- Appearances of characters: 70
- Other / unclear: 19
So basically, despite being written about celebrity appearances, most usage is for character appearances.
The Cameo is clearly in need of a split. Here are the various uses that can be spun off into specific tropes:
- The main one, a celebrity making a short appearance in a work (this should probably also be Trivia as it refers to production information)
- Characters from earlier in the series/franchise appearing briefly in a later installment (may overlap with Continuity Cameo but I'm unclear exactly what's going on with that trope)
- Characters from other franchises making brief appearances in a work (Crossover Cameo? May overlap with Lawyer-Friendly Cameo)

I'm not going to complain if this fails, and I feel like Mahoxy actually has a point now that that's been mentioned as a counterargument (though I'm not going to unhook the crowner right away; might as well just let it run out with consensus being against making that change and then go back to where we previously were). This was just an idea/experiment that came up after what happened with other stalled threads recently.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Yeah I'm with Mahoxy. This also feels like voting in favor would start a bad precedent of just dropping or reverting threads that take a while to clean up, leading to known problems never getting addressed and partial clean up that'd just have to get fixed by another TRS thread in the future. Or be a deterrent against bringing in tropes with some of the worst issues (in terms of just how large the issue is because of wick numbers) just because the project is daunting.
IMO, if limiting the number of mega projects (threads for tropes that have like over 4k wicks are something) is something we want to do to avoid having several stalled threads at the same time, that's a larger convo to have and a potential policy to make, not something to do ad hoc.

You know, I'd actually like to have that conversation. We've had a lot of (stalled) mega-projects lately, and TBH, while I personally don't agree with the idea of limiting them, I do think it's worth having a talk about it.
Should I start a Wiki Talk thread, or no?
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallWorth a shot, at least.
Made the thread. Will cross-post to the TRS meta thread.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallI just went ahead and unhooked the crowner ahead of schedule (and re-starred the thread) in favor of seeing where the Wiki Talk thread goes.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Hey I have an idea. Since this cleanup has stalled so much, maybe we could move this to Long-Term? Admittedly my idea isn't very good, but I'm not sure what else to do here.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallThis is late but I don't think moving to a projects thread is going to jump start cleanup. I am not opposed but I don't see people interested in helping clean the wicks either way (I'm not). It would probably take a year or so regardless with how many there are and how fast they are accumulating (trope is now at 14k wicks when it was 13k a few months ago)

Macron's notesYeah I knew my idea wasn't good. I'm just at a loss as to what to do here.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallWell, on the other hand Evil Genius was retooled into a super trope and moved to a clean up thread so I don't think it's a bad idea. At the very least, The Cameo is still a trope and I don't think moving wicks to more specific subtropes is as important as the other work we do as those wicks still count as The Cameo examples. In a cleanup thread, we wouldn't feel pressured to fight an uphill battle with the wicks and can clean up whenever. Unlike with renamed or cut/disambiguated tropes, it's not that big of a deal if we don't finish cleanup.

Macron's notesI don't have a problem with moving this to Projects if others are in favor of it.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. For the record, I do actually want to move this to Projects.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallProjects thread created. Locking up.

Good point. Voting no.
