Didn't want to bump the chatterbox thread for film, but I really need to show you guys something from A24.

Anybody remember Swiss Army Man? Apparently the directors saw how multiverses are becoming the next big thing and thought "hey, we could do a multiverse movie!"

Cue Everything Everywhere All At Once! Very hard to explain, but a middle-aged Asian woman finds herself literally thrust upon an incoming threat to the multiverse and she must save it by using the skills from her alternate universe variants. Somehow. Also, googly eyes.

Also also, yeah, the husband (or the alternate universe version of him?) is Short Round all grown up.

Huh, could swear we already had an A24 thread somewhere. But anyway, it's been a while since we had a non-franchise sci-fi title with a seriously bonkers premise like this one, and Michelle Yeoh is always a plus. Will definitely be looking forward to this.

A24 thread is long overdue.

I'm eagerly awaiting for this film. The director duo behind this also helmed the famously bonkers Swiss Army Man, so this oughta be quite a ride.

I've been hearing that a Hereditary sequel is a possibility? I wonder how they could pull that off? Another two hours of the cult winning at everything would get tiresome fast, but having it be about stopping the cult would turn it into a more traditional horror movie, which could very well mess with the original (which was supposed to be about making you feel real sympathy for the random victims that most horror movies and their audiences couldn't give a monkey's cuss about).

James Hong is a legend and helped paved the way for Asians in Hollywood. So glad to see him on the spotlight again.

I actually don't see Hereditary as the cult winning (minus my own theories about the ending). Through most of it they fuck up left and right. I could see another one working, there's no shortage of dysfunctional families out there.

A24 can give me the chills just by flashing the logo. They're like the anti-MCU; bizarre, offbeat, surreal, pick your poison.

I've only seen Moonlight, Good Time and Uncut Gems, but all of those, as with plenty of A24 content, are among the best films of their respective years. Even if they're generally not conventionally enjoyable, I'm so glad these films exist as something different and off the beaten path. I really wanna watch The Lighthouse.

The Lighthouse, The Witch, and Hereditary is a really solid trilogy of movies made to get under your skin and freak you the hell out.

[up] Might want to make it a quadrilogy, because here's another horror film that might make your skin crawl and then some.

X

That's it. That's the title.

EDIT: (Maybe don't watch it in the middle of the night, though.)

I just saw Everything Everywhere All at Once. That was nuts. I loved it.

This is going to be quite the Freeze-Frame Bonus mine thanks to all the single frame shots. I'm pretty sure I saw actress!Evelyn at the Crazy Rich Asians premiere... which starred Michelle Yeoh.

[up] Absolutely fantastic I agree. My best movie of 2022 so far.

I boggled when I found out the husband was Data/Short Round!

Just saw A24's latest, Marcel The Shell With Shoes On 2022 which is in limited release this weekend. I actually hadn't watched the shorts, but I saw the trailer and was intrigued. I liked it a lot. You wonder if the shorts can be stretched into 90 minutes, but it does work. Marcel's ability to monolog really sells it.

I already mentioned this in the horror thread but a lot of those images in the trailer come off freakier as stills than just letting them be reduced to quick cuts(the spirit mob bathed in hellish orange light looks like they're having way too much fun).

Heard a lot of buzz about this one... and comparisons to Evil Dead and The Exorcist. And that the movie should have content warnings for a few very upsetting and gross scenes. Unsurprising, if you've seen some of the directors' YouTube videos.

Might as well resurrect this thread since there’s been a report that the studio is looking to invest in more commercial films. The Wrap broke the story.
