I'm generally ok with that with my only issue being for Animated Shows and Live Action shows. I think they'd both fall under the broader TV shows which should be allowed (obviously so long as the other criteria are met).

What I think the same medium point is for is to prevent people from posting "duels" between a film and a video game (for example), which are far less likely to meet the other criteria posted anyways

Agree, I think we should define "medium" as the way it's usually described offsite, where even if it's animation versus live action, it's still on television.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Upon further inspection, it does look like most of the entries on that page are for TV shows, so I guess we could keep the page for that. We'd mainly be ditching stuff like the entry that has a movie "dueling" with a video game.

Is there a way to undownvote without changing to an upvote? I have no opinion on "released within one year of each other" but don't want to upvote it either. Hit the button by accident

[up]Sadly, no. The only way to undo one type of vote is to change it to the other.

Does the “overlapping runs for series” option extend to all the available time frame options?

[up]You'd have to ask Amonimus, since they were the one who provided the current crowner options. I did put that the different time limits are mutually exclusive with each other, but I probably should have put the part about overlapping runs in a separate entry.

I'm not sure what "all available" means, I was under the assumption the runs refer to the original airing dates. It may be worth elaborating. Also, I was parroting you two on that.

I brought up the overlapping for series point and the way I thought about it was that it supersedes the time limits.

The example I used in that post was Grey's Anatomy (and you can read that one again in the link) but I use "series" intentionally since this would apply to any Long Runner serialized work, like manga, for example. One Piece has been publishing since 1997 so there could (and have been) manga published WELL past the 1-2 year window that can (and have) battled it for the spot of most weekly sales.

[up] There's a point there. If one series has been running for 30 years, and if another popular work appeared like only recently (I can name a few) in the same magazine, they would be dueling, which they actually do in legal terms.

I meant that the “overlapping for series” stipulation is only on one of the timeframe options. (6 months). IMO it should still apply for the year or two-year options.

[up] Ah yes. I didn't give it much thought, but it probably could be a separate point.

I added a separate option regarding series having overlapping runs. I'm going to leave the existing entry alone because of how many votes it has.

If I was unclear earlier today, it's probably because I didn't get much sleep, so sorry about that.

The thing about "overlapping runs" is that some people are treating ongoing franchises as an "ongoing run", particularly on Dueling Works.Games.

If we're going to do the "overlapping runs" rule, we should probably note that Dueling Works is meant to concern individual titles, not generalized examples involving sprawling franchises.

Yeah. I was thinking it was more for "American Idol vs. The Voice" types of things.

Don't forget about dueling works qualifying in one country but not in another.

Works could be released in different years in different countries (due to licensing or translating).

For example, two anime series having non-overlapping runs in Japan end up with overlapping runs in the States.

Calling in favor of the following restrictions:

  • Should be within the same media category
  • Should have same/close genre
  • Should be released within one year of each other
  • In the case of series, should have overlapping runs

When I came across these pages some years back, they were essentially in random order, and there were a few works that had years listed next to them, while most others didn't. I ended up putting release years next to everything that didn't have one, then I ordered everything in chronological order, because otherwise it would just be a random mess. So, moving forward I just ask that we keep the contents of each category in chronological order just to make things easy to find.

I think putting them in chronological order sounds like a good idea.

Formatting question, which of the two works should go first on the trope page? To me it would be logical to use: "the new work - the existing work that's already running"

[up]That would make sense, since the duel didn't officially start until the second work was released.

How do we define released then?

When both works are released in the country of origin or when both are released in the West (most often the United States)?

Kirby is awesome.

[up]I think it has to be defined as "released in the country of the duel".

For example, say "Random Anime" came out in Japan in 2005 and "Random Cartoon" started airing in the US on Cartoon Network in 2005. Clearly there's no duel considering the shows aren't even available in the same country and thus can't exactly target the same audience to compete for the attention of.

Now say "Random Anime" gets brought over to the US and starts airing on Nickelodeon in 2007 weekly, on the same day and time slot as "Random Cartoon" in order to directly compete with it.

I would classify that as a duel, despite the fact that technically "Random Anime" debuted in its home country 2 years prior.
