Cleanup Thread: Character Specific Pages

Go To

Character-Specific Pages (CSPs) are created when individual characters have so many trope examples that they can't reasonably be included on a shared page.

The Administrivia Character-Specific Pages policy details the rules that apply to these pages. All Character-Specific Pages must also follow the basic How to Create a Character Page policy, as well as the wiki's more general policies about spoilers and examples.

This cleanup thread handles the following tasks:

  • Reviewing and approving new CSP proposals. All new potential CSPs must be reviewed and, if necessary, cleaned up before they're created.
  • Agreeing on page names for new CSPs.
  • Ensuring that wicks are updated when a new CSP is created.
  • Reviewing existing CSPs if there's a concern that they need cleanup, or if it's believed that the character may no longer qualify for a page.
  • Merging existing CSPs into other character pages when necessary.
  • Ensuring that wicks are updated when a CSP is removed/merged.
  • Creating, updating and cutting redirects, as necessary, to reflect these splits and merges.

Crowners are not normally required but, where appropriate, can be used to formalise decisions on any of these points.

If a character no longer qualifies for a CSP, it's often more practical to turn the CSP into a redirect than to cut the page entirely. This keeps the page history visible to users, and also helps to steer offsite 'inbound' traffic (search engine results) to the right place. With that in mind, cut requests for CSPs may be declined and referred to this thread if they don't have a clear consensus.

Comments linking back to this thread can be added to CSPs when needed - e.g. to confirm their creation was approved, to warn tropers that a cleanup is in progress, or to note the date and outcome of a more recent review.

We also have some more general threads for character page help - If these issues are spotted for a CSP, they are on-topic here as well — but as they're not the focus of this thread, you might sometimes choose to raise them on one of the others instead.
This is not a policy discussion thread, it's a cleanup thread — any requests for policy changes need to be raised in Wiki Talk.
Mod update 07 Mar 2024, reflecting new CSP policy, updated again 22 Mar 2024 to mention redirects for removed CSPs
    Text of original pinned post
There are several persistent issues with the quality of Character Specific Pages. Now that there are official requirements for creating new pages, this thread can be hub for cleaning up pages with issues or that don't qualify. The requirements settled on are as follows, and its recommended that a page meet two or more to stand on its own:

  1. Other options must have been tried first, like splitting pages into further groups.
  2. The character's folder is cleaned up beforehand, fixing any Zero-Context Examples and Wall of Text entries and removing any outdated, misused, or non-character tropes.
  3. A character's folder is at least 6,000 words/40,000 characters (with spaces). Here is a byte counter.note
  4. The current character page bypasses technical limitations and requires a split up.
  5. A single character takes up the majority of a page or is disproportionately bigger than other folders.

Splitting a character into their own page is a major change and needs to be run by the community before it is enacted. Even if you believe a character meets these requirements, they should be run through this thread first. Having other tropers take a look can help spot issues you may not notice or believe to be issues.

Per How to Create a Character Page, character-specific pages should only include tropes that describe the character. These tropes should fall under Characterization Tropes or one of its related indexes, unless they're recurring character traits (distinctive things that the character does repeatedly). If you're unsure what counts as a character trope, you can ask the Are these Character Tropes? thread.

If you have concerns with a general character page, they have their own separate cleanup thread, as do the self-demonstrating character pages.

Just out of curiosity, what’s the minimum and maximum number of bytes does a page need to qualify…?

The minimum number for a solo page creation is 40K bytes and the page gets the "Too long, please split" warning at around 250K

So I was looking at some character specific pages on the Dragon Ball series when I found something: Cooler's page includes information on Meta Cooler, as in the drones modeled after him he uses during the attack on Namek, and the Big Gete Star, which is an entirely separate character he... merges with, I guess.

Should he be turned into a character-focused page, or just remove the tropes related to the star and Meta Coolers?

Over on the Western Animation forum page, there is a discussion going on the Primal topic over whether or not its character page needs splitting off or not. Now I’ve been told on this very page that the maximum number of bytes needed before it can be split off is 250K.

I’ve recently counted the number of bytes over on the page Byte Counter site and it comes up to 227K. My question to you all is thus this; Is it worth splitting off or not? And if not, is it worth it if said character page is better re-organised…?

Just from eyeballing the page, the sections of the various animals look like they could be split into another page if they're all grouped up into one, but that's the only one I can see that looks big enough for a split.

[up]Anything else…? If not, would it be a-ok if I better re-organise the page once I split the creatures section off into its own page?

@Androne — While the Big Gete Star is a separate entity from Cooler, its role is exclusively tied to the latter to the point where you may as well consider it an extension to Cooler's own role in the series. So yeah, you could consider the idea of the Big Gete Star having its own sheet in Cooler's page, which would have to be reclassified under Character-Focused Pages (with others).

@The10thGeek and STARCRUSHER99 — The Primal Character Page should be split, mainly because trying to edit a page that exceeds 200k bytes is a pain to go through (as pages tend to freeze up temporarily whenever you're typing something). Preferably, I would go with the following pages...

This is just my take. If you have another stance, you're always free to try those if you think they would work better.

Anyway, made some pages quite recently, so here are the following...

I've also looked at their parent pages' byte size and made sure those too were large enough. Is there anything that can be recommended in regards to cleaning them up, or are they good to go?

I'd also add Kingdom Hearts Saix into the mix. I've cleaned up some of his paragraphs and got to around 43,672 bytes for him.

[up]~CrimsonShark, several other users on its topic page have their own suggestions for split pages

~Moroaica suggests the following character pages:

Main characters (Fang Spear Mira) - Maybe put the family members here too, main characters and family

Humans & Humanoids - All the humans that appeared in the show, including the English ones, as well as the primitive men and witches

Creatures - Dinosaurs, Reptiles, Mammals, Fish, Other Creatures ect

meanwhile ~Snicka suggests that I should also create the following page:

Maybe the characters from "The Primal Theory" - including the Historical Society and the Madman - can have their own subpage as well? They are not part of the main narrative and maybe not even part of the same timeline.

What do you think I should do…?

Samantha Larusso’s folder has officially hit 40,894 characters and the The Karate Kid: The LaRusso Family page would be about 56,000 without it

[up][up] The first idea by Moroaica seems like a good plan.

[up] I've already mentioned Sam in my previous post.

[up][up][up]It's okay if you don't follow my suggestion to give a separate page to "The Primal Theory" characters; it's just that it stands so separate from Spear and Fang's adventures that it felt logical to me to give them their own page, especially if we need to shorten the other pages.

[up] And [up][up] yeah, I was just about to post on here enquiring about your suggestion ~Snicka and now that that’s sorted, I’ll sort it this weekend using a mix of ~CrimsonShark subpages and ~Moroaica character suggestion (if possible)!!

[up] Cool with me.

Well, it's my birthday, so I decided to wrap up the drafts that I established earlier and make them full-fledged character pages. Here are as follows...

Now, all that's left is to send the drafts to the Cut List, so yeah.

Sandbox.Danganronpa Monokuma hasn't been edited in a while and its page has launched already. Safe to cut?

[up] Found it's a leftover from your Sandbox.Danganronpa project. Since it was used for CSP and now there's nothing there I've cut that as well.

Would it be okay to create a OtherRicksAndMortys page separate from } the Others page since it’s such a specific thing? The page would be 115,000 with out it and it’s pretty close on its own at 38,000 but as I said it is its own thing and more Ricks and Morty are likely to fill that page soon enough.

I'd at least go with a different name to avoid a redundant namespace. Like Rick And Morty Alternate Selves

~CrimsonShark, ~Snicka and ~Moroaica, barring a few minor redirects, here's the final, (un)finished product split up into the four aforementioned subpages, along with each individual subpages byte count.

If it all looks good to youse, I should be able to create the subpage, roughly around this time tomorrow night, unless anyone has any objections.
