Needs Help: Guide Dang It

and Thank you for noticing the prototype draft, you made my day. I appreciate knowing that you feel it is decent enough to post to TLP.

It was written before the crowner, when we were unsure what direction to take the trope; I wrote it up to work towards doing something instead of just talking, to help us visualize what one of the proposed tropes would look like (which is why it only gives Guide Dang It! a token mention - there was no idea about whether we would split Guide Dang It!, keep it and make a new trope for things that aren't strictly necessary to know, etc.)

Given the state of the crowner, us having no solid plan at the moment, and the prototype being specifically created in the context of this topic, I would only put the prototype through TLP if we were able to come to a consensus that it would be warranted. Muddying things up when we're still not in agreement on Guide Dang It! would only exacerbate issues, I feel (e.g. "What's the difference between this and Guide Dang It!?" when we aren't in agreement about what Guide Dang It! should be.)

Though I find it unlikely, in the event that we were to come to such a decision, I'd be more than willing to make the prototype a TLP draft. I know enough games to whip up three examples.

Yeah, I think this crowner is unsalvageable. Like I said, even if we somehow get consensus, I wouldn't feel good about it. Call it a Pyrrhic Victory if you will.

Aye, in fact I was about to bring this up to the staff. Question here would be whether we can this thread and put an entry on Tropes Needing TRS to deal with the Walkthrough Mode, or if we try to repurpose this thread instead.

I think it's time to declare the crowner a failure.

I'd rather just make a Walkthrough Mode cleanup thread. No reason to drag this back to TRS later; I'm not even sure it's possible for TRS to fix such an issue.

You don't need to bring this to the staff. None of the options (currently) have consensus, so you could call the crowner right now and be done with this.

We really should make a Walkthrough Mode cleanup thread. I'm surprised we didn't have one already.

It's late and I'm tired, so I didn't look properly through the proposed new-trope writeup, but at a glance it looks good, and I'm in favour of this new trope!

For what it's worth, I was, I believe, quite open to argument. I just wasn't convinced by what was presented.

There can be evidence in more than one direction. It's a matter of what evidence is presented, and what evidence is found more compelling.

So now that we have the thread, I'm guessing Septimus will want us to take some initiative and make it active before we close this one. So let's get cleaning!

May as well add on, would there be any value in also starting a short-term Guide Dang It! clean up to address the other problems with Guide Dang It! besides Walkthrough Mode? I think it'd be good to have a resource that other tropers can use to discuss specific examples with others.

I'm not sure if it'll see much traffic, but it can't hurt to make one. Otherwise, cleanup will be spread out on Is this an example?, walkthrough mode cleanup, complaining cleanup, wall of text cleanup, ZCE cleanup, and the fact-checking thread.

I don't mind either option: spread-out cleanup OR a designated thread.

Well, after thinking about it more, and seeing further support, it seems that most would think that the prototype draft I made warrants a run through TLP. Though I was hesitant because of confusion with Guide Dang It!, I realized that there is often overlap between defined tropes.

Given that the prototype would be distinct enough, I'll probably make a TLP post when I have more free time today. I would want to get a bit of a consensus on scope there (for example, I feel it should only pertain to things a player can meaningfully take advantage of), but that can be settled there.

Since the Walkthrough Mode thread's been active enough, closing.
