Doesn't seem like we have a thread for YMS, so I guess I'll make one. Let me know if I'm mistaken, of course.

So, in this video, Adam takes a deep look into the "The Lion King ripped off Kimba the White Lion" controversy. Turns out Kimba the White Lion is... Kind of insane. Involving, among other things, humans using a batallion of tanks to exterminate elephants, Kimba wearing his father's inexplicably preserved skin, Kimba becoming an Abusive Parent, major Values Dissonance about colonialism, and lots of Blackface. Apparently, most of the similarities are cherry picked from thousands of hours of the Kimba franchise, usually out of context, or from a movie that didn't come out until after The Lion King. Much of this comes not from malicious intent, but ignorance from people who never actually watched Kimba. It really shows why you shouldn't always trust what you see on Youtube... Please ignore the fact that I have not watched Kimba either, and am just going off of Adam's video.

I missed the part where that's my problem.

Dang, two and a half hours long, but that video was amazing. And I love this comment I found on the video: "I love how you became the world's leading authority on Kimba out of pure spite. That's a power move." xD

The biggest strike for Disney probably due to they issued a cease and desist for the Simba movie in a movie festival( which was a dick move) but seem more like Disney lawyers were flexing and defending their trademark without doing research.

I just watched some Kimba on You Tube. It's... An experience. xD

I think what's so amusing/baffling about all of this is just how far this 'Disney Stole Kimba'thing got, despite how there's no evidence except scenes from a Kimba film that came out years after The Lion King and appears to be the actual theif here.

Like, a published author legit did a TED talk made up of You Tube Kimba fans videos full of misinformation, and dubious claims from one published book that are easily fact checked as false if you've actually watched Kimba. And this woman doesn't even appear to have seen The Lion King either.

Also it's kind of hilarious how people who haven't seen Kimba pushed it as some borderline masterpiece that's thunder was stolen from Disney, when the Kimba content varies wildly in both message and overall animation and VA quality, and is full of offensive stereotypes.

I think it should be reiterated that the dad's corpse being kept as a disturbing throw rug and plot device is a thing in every version of Kimba.

That's such a bizarre thing for a children's show to do.... And then the reveal that they save the skin of all of the past males of the family in a shrine...wtf

You know what this means right... One day, Kimba's son.. will wear Kimba.

Guys. Guys. How does a lion skin another lion?

That's another major point of distinction. Where Lion King has a Predation Is Natural message, Kimba prefers everyone be a Vegetarian Carnivore. Granted, I think it's meant to be a metaphor for humans, but it still comes off as a bit confusing.

I missed the part where that's my problem.

So Adam's been working on a massive The Lion King (2019) review since last year, which ended up spawning his Kimba video while he did research. And while he works he's been releasing some behind the scenes things on his second channel, YMS Highlights. He just put out a video where he looks through promotional materials and it seems that, based on how the cast and staff talk about it in early promotions, Chiwetel Ejiofor actually did a full and sung performance of "Be Prepared". But that's far from what appears in the film, where the song is drastically shortened and sounds more like regular talking than singing.

Which has me going whyyyyyyyyyyy.

Another behind the scenes video, also knows as Adam growing increasingly annoyed/amused at Beyonce worship despite her barely appearing in promotional footage or doing any cast activities.

Also, yeah, the need of every reporter ever to ask other cast members specifically about Beyonce is weird. I'd honestly get so tired of everyone coming to interview me on my work in a film and end up talking about Beyonce again. Holy shit. She's a good singer, but she's not god.

Adam & Pals watch Thirteen Reasons season 4.

Man, this show really went so off the rails. It's basically a parody of itself now. I'm amused at how the show opens with a PSA from the actors, as if this show is anything but a badly written, cheesy teen soap opera at this point.

And they all have different things happening.

  • Season 1: A straightforward sad girl suicide drama.
  • Season 2: A court room drama about the events that led to her suicide.
  • Season 3: A tone-deaf murder mystery about the sad girl's rapist who's treated with humanity even though he's a fucking rapist.
  • Season 4: The main protagonist loses his marbles.

The 4th season is legit just I Know What You Did Last Summer, and that's really weird to think about it.

I still can't get over the fact that after two seasons of portraying Bryce as a serial rapist that ruins peoples lives, they tried to make him some kind of complex and sympathetic character. And they like utterly failed at what they were going for. It's like, "Here's Good Guy Bryce painting with his mother..and here he is twenty minutes later threatening to slice open a child's throat. Please feel bad for him."

Adam watches an interview with Fred Patten from the Kimba DVD that didn't come in the mail until recently. On this interview Patten admits that the Kimbaspiracy was exaggerated, but tries to low key deny that he had anything to do with it. Very juicy.

This comment put it best lol

Fred Patten: Kimba? Simba? The similarities are beyond reasonable coincidence

Also Fred Patten: I do not hold any responsibility for this Kimbaspiracy

Adam tackles the music of The Lion King 2019 in another behind the scenes video, and a mysterious insider sent him isolated vocal performances.

Also, dear lord the amount of pitch correcting they did. As Adam points out, you're Disney. Just have the actors come in for another vocal performance if you don't have the right takes instead of turning everyone in to a robot, holy shit.

This movie is more fuel for a passion project than anything else, such as Beyonce's visual album on Disney+ for example.
