Opened...not really feeling the suggestion, and I think (could be wrong) that Mario is one of those characters that we consider culturally ubiquitous. I get the trope immediately from the current, so I'm calling this a Keep Until Better Image Suggested case.
I think so too but I don’t think it would hurt to pair her with Mario.
This is technically a Gender-Bent Alternate Universe, but Adventure Time has a rather pleasant example◊ (on mobile so cant search for higher quality version, but there should be ones.
I'd like to find a different image regardless, since we don't have permission to use the one currently on the page. That said, I wouldn't mind just swapping with a different fanart of Mario (or another character) that we did have permission for.
I'm fine with Mario/Maria, but we should put pictures of the two characters next to each other. My problem with the Adventure Time suggestion is that this trope is specifically about adaptations / fan works, so characters from the same work doesn't work.
The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.

either one, barring permission problems.
The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.I agree that Mario is culturally ubiquitous enough that we don't need to show him. The image should be fanart since this trope is about fan works.
Keet cleanupI mean IIRC the gender-bent Adventure Time characters were originally fanart by someone on the show's crew before they were used in canon, but technicalities and all that.
Is the person who drew Maria even still active online?
Jawbreakers on sale for 99¢It looks like the artist is active. But I think finding another art is still probably our best/easiest option, considering the sheer quantity of Rule 63 fanart that exists - there's plenty that wouldn't require us to go through a language barrier to ask permission.
Also, I think it's worth mentioning that the first two sections on the page are 100% devoted to canon examples of this trope. And... the canon examples are also mixed into the other sections as well, for some reason.

I actually think this and Gender Flip need a cleanup. They predate 'canon' examples like Gender-Bent Alternate Universe.
I agree. There are also a lot of dead links too, alongside just the general messiness from examples that were written before we standardized what they should look like.
Though I think some of the "canon" examples might still fit better on this page - like there's a bunch that are just "a fan asked the artist what the character would look like as a girl, so the artist did a quick sketch."
Clock is set.
Stopped the clock and hooked a crowner.
Votes bump; two in the green, one in consensus range.
Calling for 6.1; it's swapped in and tagged. Not sure that the old caption fits anymore; thoughts?

The trope is that for every male character, there is a (usually unofficial) female version. But to show this trope, we should really depict both the male and the female character. Currently, the pic shows only the female, with the caption explaining how she's an example.
Or if people prefer an in-work example (instead of fan art), this page or a crop thereof would work well compared with its main cast.
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!
