Silversun Pickups may get flak for sounding like a Smashing Pumpkins tribute band - to the point where Brian Aubert always sounds like he's auditioning for the role of Billy Corgan in a biopic - but I find it hard to complain when they write far better Pumpkins songs than anything Corgan's done since the mid-1990s. Banger track, massive vibes of one of the heavier songs from Siamese Dream. Not much else to say.
(also ~coemedypink may as well ping since it's been a week and the thread died)

"This kimono is perfect for the Hisui-themed festival, right?" - CynthiaAbsolutely beautiful! I've never seen Love Story, but I've definitely heard the theme without realizing it. I like to listen to instrumentals while I study, so maybe it was in one of those?

I've been here too long. Regretting choosing this screenname ten years ago.Gotta love upbeat-sounding songs caked in depressive Lyrical Dissonance, right? I appreciate how the singer sounds pissed off in a very passive-aggressive, needly way the whole time. It's exactly how I'd imagine substance addiction would talk if it had a voice.

I would also highly recommend watching the music video. It's one of my all-time favourites.
I like it. It's not really sit-down-and-listen-to kind of music to me, but it would make for a pretty killer stage theme for the right video game.

"This kimono is perfect for the Hisui-themed festival, right?" - Cynthiai can hear this over a final battle in a Medieval European Fantasy movie or something like that, pretty wicked. the female vocals, on the other hand? heavenly.

"This kimono is perfect for the Hisui-themed festival, right?" - CynthiaBy the almost energyless singing and the seemingly off tune instruments, I shouldn't be liking this. But it grows on me after about 15 seconds. A comfy and real good listen.

Not even stars last forever.Hadestown is a fascinating beast. I am by no means a theatre kid, the show tune style typical of Broadway plays isn't really my thing, but despite its stage roots this isn't remotely that; you can tell these are songs penned by someone well outside the typical Broadway sphere as an experiment in musical storytelling. Even with added stageside string sections and Broadway stars filling the roles once played by Anais Mitchell and her assorted folk friends, the pared-back indie Americana vibe hangs heavy over these songs, allowing them to stand as a pretty unique entity in the history of musical theatre.
Comparing this to Mitchell's original album take, Patrick Page is the better Hades. His gravelly Basso Profundo lends the character a sense of power and malice Greg Brown, for all his own low growl is pretty impressive, simply did not have. Eva Noblezada, on the other hand, doesn't feel at home in the role of Eurydice in quite the same way Anais Mitchell did, but her performance is still commendable.

I like the idea of Imagine Dragons turning out to have a heavy industrial side out of absolutely nowhere, but sadly they are still Imagine Dragons, so this is too polished and sleek to be as much of an ugly, dirty battering ram as it's clearly straining to be. But for it to have any ambition at all puts it well in the upper echelons of their discography, so... congratulations, I suppose.
