…I wonder what goes through the producers' minds sometimes.
"Hey, we need an idea for a movie."
"I dunno… How about a sequel to that mildly popular movie from 20 years ago?"

It was more than “mildly” popular given how often it’s been used as a baseline comparison to other films or anything with a jet (Ex - Macross Plus is Top Gun as a an anime!) And having seen it a few months ago, it’s still great fun in that 80’s sort of way.
Honestly, the plot kind of reflects the lead in a way. Still pushing forward, doing the same thing because it’s all they can see themselves do.

34 years ago by the time it comes out.
The Protomen enhanced my life.…Huh, I was pretty sure it came out in 95 or something… Tom Cruise really doesn't age, does he.

Think longer! The first Top Gun came out in 1986.
>thirty years of service
>only a captain
...Isn't "up or out" a thing in the US Navy?
"Yup. That tasted purple."Finally watch the trailer... man that visual design is incredible. It's not reinventing the wheel but it definitely modernizes the style of the original. The sense of speed with the fixed "outside the cockpit" shot looks built for IMAX.
Hell, if you didn't screw up a whole lot, you could practically be a freaking admiral with that length of service as a commissioned officer.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. The admiral in the trailer outright says that Mitchell should've had stars by now with his record.
Plus thirty years is the mandatory retirement point for one-star admirals, so...

"Yup. That tasted purple."I'm wondering if the main conflict of the film is about Mitchell wondering how to make his last year in service before mandatory retirement worthwhile, training his last class of pilots at Miramar and attending their graduation before riding his motorcycle off into the sunset.
From the looks of the trailer it's going to be something about UCA Vs replacing manned fighters.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Huh, two different threads for the same movie.
Anyway, I've got a theory on why Maverick is still a captain.
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)Okay, so there are two threads for this movie, and you know There Can Be Only One.
I personally want this thread to be the one that stays, simply because the thread starts with the movie trailer.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.I wonder if Kenny Loggins, Cheap Trick, or Berlin will contribute any songs to the soundtrack, their songs were the highlight of the first one (actually, I've never seen the movie, but I love the soundtrack album).
Dang, nobody's posted here for almost 3 years, despite the film coming out this month on the 27th!
We've had a new trailer since then:
NOTE: Bit of a spoiler in that article down below, so beware.
[[China Was Freaked Out Over The SR-72 Darkstar In Top Gun: Maverick https://www.19fortyfive.com/2022/05/chinas-was-freaked-out-over-the-sr-72-darkstar-in-top-gun-maverick/
I should point out that a captain in the Navy is like a colonel in the Army, Air-Force, and Marines; a captain in the Army, Air-Force, and Marines is the equivalent to a lieutenant in the Navy.
In the Navy, the officer ranks go Ensign, Lieutenant JG (Junior Grade), Lieutenant, Lt.Commander, Commander, Captain, Rear Admiral Lower Half, Rear Admiral Upper Half, Vice Admiral, Admiral, and Fleet Admiral.

We gotta change the thread’s title by the way. >.>
Well apparently all the delays and the like were worth it, because it is being hailed as one of the greatest action movie sequels since Mad Max: Fury Road.
Heck, it makes sense, given how dedicated the filmmakers for this film were to using real stunts and vehicles.

But does it have Ho Yay volleyball?
According to one reviewer, yes and no, whatever that means.

I mean, you have to keep in mind that those that review movies this early tend to have a vested interest in, well, making sure that they can review the next movie early.
This one in particular raised some red flags: Essentially, this franchise has lost that loving feeling. And with it gone (gone, gone), so too is a bit of the thrill. but was listed as a positive.
Not saying it won't be good. I genuinely think it will be. More of a comment on how pre-release reviews are worthless.

You can't kill art.Y'know, I just realized I've never actually seen the first movie. Heck, I don't even think I know if it has an actual plot beyond plane stunts and homoerotic volleyball. Guess I have to get to that.
Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonI mean there's not MUCH plot beyond that and the soundtrack.
