I'm not talking about Characters.Pokemon, I'm talking about subpages for each species. Each Pokemon line has a model collage from the sixth or seventh generation, like this on Pokémon: Generation I - Bulbasaur to Tentacruel (Bulbasaur folder):

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/001-002-003-oras_4557.png

However, there's the eighth generation on the horizon, and it's definitely going to make an upgrade to Pokemon models, making these outdated. These images are also not transparent, and it's not guaranteed SWSH' images are going to be transparent either. And having to change hundreds of images each generation must be obnoxious, so I propose using official art which is pretty much permanent (apparently it's changed with remakes, but I doubt that, the Bulbasaur image wasn't changed since 2005, no changes were made for almost 15 years, not even for LGPE) and transparent, like this:

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bulbasaur001.png
Bulbasaur
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ivysaur002.png

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/venusaur003.png
Venusaur
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/megavenusaur003m.png
Mega Venusaur

It may take some time, but the small image size won't clutter up the pages (the captions look wrong and the images are not aligned to the right, but this is an issue with the forum, not the wiki), and this would give us two huge benefits I mentioned earlier. Does anyone else think we should start using official art for Pokemon species pages from now on? We do that with trainers and other human characters, so this would also work great for consistency. I also think we should use a consistent 240x240 size. Still, I'm interested in opinions.

TL;DR: We should start using official art of Pokemon on character pages for transparency, consistency and permanence.

Go ahead. The 3D models are way less visually dynamic, anyway.

I prefer keeping the current 3D models because they currently show Mega Evolutions for those pokemon that have them.

At the very least, add the official artwork alongside the current images of ingame sprites.

Mega Evolutions and other form variants also have official artwork, there's no problem in adding those.

Yeah but some of them don't represent nearly as well as their ingame sprites.

I don't see that as much of a concern. Mega Evolved forms are pretty much always distinct from normal forms on the official art and well-illustrated. The only one that I see as slightly problematic is Venusaur and Mega Venusaur, but even here, there are some differences.

The only form variants that don't have official art are Eternal Flower Floette, Original Color Magearna, and Neutral Mode Xerneas, but since the former two are Dummied Out and the latter is only seen outside of battle, I don't think this is an issue. I like that Unown spell out "TV TROPES", but this could be recreated with their official art.

Alright, since there seems to be some consensus, I've made a sandbox at Sandbox.Pokemon Character Page Images which has images for all Pokemon from Gen I and Gen VIII (for the latter, it's admittedly not that many), as well as some images for Pokemon outside of those generations. If anyone has feedback, please say it. If anyone wants to help, go ahead. I've just made a few rules to make this comfortable:

  • All images are consistent 240x240, since that's Bulbapedia's smallest automatic resize, mobile users probably wouldn't like having lots of 350x350, it's a huge improvement over current usually 100x100 sections for each monster and Pokemon don't really need huge sizes because they're not that detailed. (Except for already uploaded art at different resolutions.)
  • All images have filenames as "pokemonxyz" where "xyz" is their number, with possible modifiers such as "megapokemonxyzm". (With some minor exceptions.)
  • All Pokemon are sorted like on character pages, with a level 1 heading separating each folder like it would be on a character page. See Pokémon: Generation I - Bulbasaur to Tentacruel and its respective folder on my sandbox for comparison.
  • If you want to do a specific folder, please say you reserve it and do it as fast as possible, otherwise I'll do them myself.
I have already saved pics of all Gen II Pokemon, planning to finish that folder by the end of next week. I may drift off to do other Gen folders too. I apologise for my lack of activity, but this is mostly because this is a rather large project.

TLDR: You can see how much progress I've made at Sandbox.Pokemon Character Page Images and possibly help me as long as you follow specific rules mentioned above for consistency.

[up]I dislike the space on the top and bottom of ones like Crobat, Geodude, Kyogre, Primal Groudon, Melmetal, Guzzlord, and Naganadel. Autocrop them before uploading. Also, some Pokémon species already have official art uploaded on their Pantheon pages.

EDIT: I made Zeraora's art transparent and added Darkrai, since it was already uploaded.

Once I'm finished with uploading most images (probably when the page gets too long), I'll check if any Pokemon have problems with verticality. So far, there seems to be nine: Muk, Alolan Muk, Geodude, Graveler, Alolan Geodude, Alolan Graveler, Groudon, Kyogre, and Heatran. Not sure if breaking consistency for only 9 out of currently 300+ images is needed, but we'll see when this page gets full.

The image for the Unown still has a white background.

[up]I think that was intentional, since Unown are dark gray and would blend into the background in Night Vision. Could I replace the Unown Pantheon image with the art?

[up][up]Consistency is unimportant; the images should like nice no matter what.

Here's the update: Generation II is done. I'm thinking about going slightly out of order and doing Generation V next, since it is quite simple, it has no Pokemon which could be part of any previous lines. I've already downloaded most images from it.

I've taken a rather long break from this due to a two-day visit at a family member and getting distracted by the new video feature, but I'm back. I'm still working on Gen V, also planning to download pics from Gen III and Gen VI. Despite the slow pace, progress is being made.

Another update: I'm halfway done. I've just finished Gen V. Now I'm thinking about going for Gen VI, it's tiny when you compare it to the others. Just four more generations to go.
