I'm not sure how much can be done with those pics...maybe we could rebuild it using panels from newer, higher-res games.
If each of those games is on The Spriter's Resource then I could probably recreate those screenshots in their native resolutions. It would be extremely tedious, though.
Why not just emulate the games and screenshot it?

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."
I think that's a fitting image, and the old caption can go with it (minus the note, of course).
For every pioneer on every new frontier: Be brave. Be bold. And stay wiggly.(Annoyed grunt)
I would prefer a quality upgrade of the current.
Keet cleanupWe've got enough consensus to go with 5, but I'm going to give someone a chance to make an upgrade of the current.
I'm willing to let someone recreate the current image too, despite my vote. Crossover-Enthusiast's idea of screenshotting an emulation seems the best way to do it.
For every pioneer on every new frontier: Be brave. Be bold. And stay wiggly.Cave Story is a freeware PC game, so no emulation needed for that one.
Keet cleanupRebuilt using sprite sheets:
Not 1:1 but close enough, in my opinion.
The Gradius picture could use improvement (it's hard to see the bubbles, since they are small), but the other three are good.

Yeah, the Gradius Galaxies pic was the hardest one to recreate. It's surprisingly difficult to find sprite sheets of that game. I had to stitch the background together from three separate screenshots, and the ship is technically from a different Gradius game.
Is there another game that could be substituted for the Gradius panel?
From the top of my head, Kirby: Squeak Squad has a Bubble ability, though the style might clash a bit too much.

Messily upscaled. Perhaps it could be reverse-engineered to its original size (although the lower-right picture looks awfully mangled).
