I wouldn't be surprised if the general public forgot all about what Yang did considering not long after even worse happened. Though I assume they already put together that Yang was framed but just don't have the means to prove it and it doesn't appear to be a hindrance at this time either.

Eh. If it's anything like real life, some people might cotton on eventually but everyone else will just think the worst of her and some people probably won't know who she is because, just as with the Olympics in real life, I'm sure not everyone in Remnant will care to watch or pay attention to the 'athletes'.

It did get mentioned by lionheart so I think what stuck with people more was what people assumed to be a girl but actually a robot get bisected on live TV and a Atlas technology attacking civilians and students suddenly.

I feel like Angst? What Angst? really shouldn't apply to something like that. Why should they panic at just the sight of Amity Arena, over a year later? It happens, but it's the exception rather than the rule.

Not panic, be reminded that people died in that arena.

Did anyone other than penny die in tbe arena itself because I feel like more people probably died outside of the arena where things really took a turn for the worse.

People died all around Beacon, the Arena was just the beginning.

It would make sense if they disliked the sight of the Arena do to bad memories, but that Dosent mean they have too.

Penny was the only shown or mentioned fatality in the arena, Vale and Beacon had more shown fatalities and injuries. So Amenity Arena shouldn't have more of an impact than say Beacon Academy where Pyrrha died and Yang lost her arm for example. In the grand scheme of things the arena shouldn't have all that much of an impact since most of the team weren't even on it when the fall started.

Everything about this Winter Maiden gambit screams Unspoken Plan Guarantee.

Flynt's trumpet is the Most Wonderful Sound.

Robyn and Clover have definitely banged.

Alcoholism does not work that way.

  • First, the simplest topic: the tundra. It would seem that the Grimm have certain regional variants to them, with the Manticore's and Beowulfs in Atlas having more bone plating on them than on Anima or Sanus. This is likely to insulate them, since according to the World of Remnant of Mantle, the one thing that kept the Grimm at bay for a long time was the frigidness of the Tundra freezing Grimm solid. And its definitely cold up there since they have flipping penguins!
  • Next simplest, the return of Team FNKI! I am happy to see they didn't forget about them, and with the fact the teams are living in Atlas Academy, it brings hope that they'll return again. I like Flynt and Neon's new looks, just not fond of Neon's new hairdo. Seems to be a thing where I'm not fond of the hairstyles this volume. Also, did Neon get a new VA?
    • Their teammates are interesting. One I think they said is named Cobalt, but considering their team name, either it's spelt Kobalt, or one of the remaining two's last names starts with a K.
  • Speaking of living at the academy... am I the only one questioning why Weiss sleeps with that braid? That can't be comfortable. And does she just redo it after bathing? Or has she not bathed since getting to Atlas? Ew.
  • The teams are getting settled into life at the academy and as huntsmen. Jaune's bonding with Marrow and training under Vine, Ruby is testing herself against Hare, Weiss is training with Winter, Oscar is training under Ironwood, and Qrow is bonding with Clover.
    • Speaking of, I love how Clover is very clearly Qrow's opposite in every way and is trying to build back up Qrow's self esteem. Probably hurt Qrow all the more if he suddenly has to fight Clover.
    • Also, confirmation that Qrow's stopped drinking. Good.
  • Next we have Robyn Hill and her Happy Huntresses.
    • Interesting to note that all of the other huntresses seem to use the same weapon, implying they're simply mass produced. Nice that they did that rather than give them each regular weapons or personalized ones, shows that they are still from Mantle and as such falling on hard times. They can't afford fancier weapons, and it wouldn't surprise me if these weapons were just re-purposed mining tools.
    • We got a name for the Cow or Sheep Faunus, Fiona Thyme. Thyme is a type of mint, so Mint Green covers the CNR.
    • The other two huntresses are Johanna and May, and it would seem one of them has a cloaking Semblance. Assumedly, Penny picked them up with thermal readings.
    • Robyn is definitely evoking the "Robin Hood" motif as expected, but she seems to have a personal history with Clover. Consider the implication Clover is close in age to Qrow with his "generation" comment, and that Robyn is a confirmed Atlas graduate, I'm gonna guess classmates if not former teammates. Whatever their former relationship, its clear We Used to Be Friends is in effect, where Clover just wishes the best for Robyn, while Robyn wants Clover to see reason and help her.
    • Good on them for having Robyn stand down only after Penny came out. Penny may be Ironwood's subordinate like Clover, but unlike him she is explicitly the protector of Mantle. Robyn has likely seen that Penny is really just an earnest young woman doing her best to protect Mantle, and it wouldn't surprise me if she eventually tries to recruit Penny. Cause in her eyes, Penny isn't really an Atlesian stooge: she's already one of them. She's a citizen of Mantle in Robyn's eyes, and she has no desire to fight against her own people.
  • Next we have Weiss and Winter's conversation. This scene here ultimately demonstrates how Jacques warped them thanks to his influence even after they've escaped him.
    • Weiss is heavily distrustful of anyone who thinks they're doing things for altruistic reasons. This was all the way back with her comment about being tired of people telling her whats best for her in Volume 6. So Weiss currently has trust issues bigger than the rest of her team but not as big as Ozpin's. Because of this though, she's quick to look for the worst in about anyone out of fear and as a defense mechanism.
    • Winter meanwhile has placed too much of her faith in Ironwood. She has based her self worth on trying to help him, to the point that even learning her destiny has been plotted out by him she tries to rationalize as her making that destiny her own. I'll get to that in a little bit, but she's basically turned Ironwood into her new father figure, and because she thinks he knows whats best, she's willing to follow him to hell and back. She's effectively indoctrinated herself into thinking Ironwood knows best.
  • Next the Winter Maiden: Fria. They weren't kidding when they said she wasn't a "Spring Chicken", she's knocking on deaths door! And unfortunately, we're seeing a case of History Repeats once more. Fria is Amber and Winter is Pyrrha.
    • Just like Amber, Fria is a slowly dying Maiden, and for the sake of keeping her powers from going to someone else, a new Maiden has been selected in advance from someone handpicked by an Academy Headmaster, an Aura Transfer unit has been set up, and Fria will be allowed to die once they have fused her Aura with the new Maiden.
    • Just like with Pyrrha, Winter was handpicked by Ironwood to be his new Winter Maiden. He reveals to her that he had her destiny planned out already and then gives her a "choice" to do so, only for her to immediately accept out of a sense of duty. The "choice" however is the illusion of choice, with both times the Maiden Candidate being unknowingly pressured and manipulated based on their behavior to give the Headmaster the response they desire, and both rationalizing their fate as them making the decisions themselves. And in Winter's case, despite her Destiny being formed for her, she's deluded herself into thinking she's chosen this path, when really, she's doing exactly as Ironwood planned her too.
  • Lastly, Jacques... We all saw this coming. This asshat was approached by Watts with the express purpose of being his puppet. Jacques concern last week was that because of the blockade costing him money, he'd have to shut down the unnecessary SDC shops in Mantle, but he couldn't do that since he needs their votes. But since Watts has offered to rig the election, either by hacking the results or having Tyrian kill Robyn, he doesn't have to worry about that. And by doing this, like Winter said, he's lit the spark that is the powder keg known as Mantle. The increased negativity from the Mantle citizens will attract the Grimm even more, as well as push the people of Mantle to supporting Robyn. Should she turn up dead then like Forest did, it will turn them even more against Atlas and invoke a full blown war between Mantle and Atlas. Fat chance of informing the public about Salem now, the people of Mantle are already rioting and would refuse to believe anything from Atlas. Watts has used Jacques to ruin Ironwood's plans before they could even get off the ground.
    • Nice attention to detail by having the one to throw the trashcan be the same drunkard who called after Weiss in Episode 1. Demonstrates that he wasn't just a one off character and will likely have relevancy going forward. At least to the level Forest had.

[up][up][up]Considering I live with an alcoholic, I can say that what Qrow is doing is the start to getting past it. He's not completely past it, he's just trying to stop drinking. He could easily relapse, so right now, he's a recovering alcoholic.

[up] Yeah, the moment something bad happens he's going to be fiercely tempted to go back to the bottle; or at least he should be. It would be a nice mini-twist if he actually does, because it's (almost always) not that easy, simple or clean.

The thing with Winter is interesting, because I'm not very sure what's going to happen there. So far no Cinder yet (and no interludes to what's going on with Salem* or the rest of her lackeys not already in Atlas). We know she's going to be after the maiden powers, both because that's her whole objective as a character and because she knows she's not going to be welcome in Evernight without at least one of the relics.

I like Weiss's cynicism, and the continued undertones of "what the hell am I even doing out here?" It also shows that the doubts she (and by extension everyone else) aired under the influence of the Apathy were already there, and just brought to the forefront.

I'm hoping they don't just have Cinder yoink the Winter maiden's powers and kill Winter. That would just be a retreat of Pyrrha. It'll be more interesting if Cinder has to figure out a way to steal Atlas's relics without having the key to the door herself. I would honestly not object to Weiss ending up with it through an accident/mistake.

* They may be waiting for the dramatic moment when she finally joins the fight personally; I'm still holding out hope that's not gonna happen however, because that would mean the Throne Camping was not for any particular reason besides Sorting Algorithm of Evil, and once we inevitably get the "Thanos in Wakanda" scene where Salem effortlessly curbstomps all of the good guys we're left asking why the hell she didn't do that earlier.

I would imagine Qrow as also avoided going near the stuff to avoid the temptation of falling off the wagon. The question is what Qrow will do when things start going bad and he happens to pass a bottle just sitting there.

[up] As I said, I hope he cracks and relapses, if only long enough for Yang or Ruby to find him and take the bottle away, at which point we get a shot of Qrow looking ashamed. Speaking of which it's good that this episode shows Yang and Ruby spending time together, they are family after all.

Incidentally much as I was expecting this volume feels rather like the early volumes tone wise, with the whole lighthearted workplace Slice of Life thing going on right now, almost as if the heroes had stayed at Beacon and graduated without incident. At the same time, it's obvious that's just a facade, they can't just go back to the way things were.

Oh yeah, and Oscar is shown fighting alongside team JNPR; should we consider moving him to their page since it's pretty clear at this point he's their Sixth Ranger?

Liked this episode, the montage showing them all training/working as huntsmen was neat.

@ Twinbird

Alcoholism does not work that way.

In what way is it supposed to work? Also to bring in a RT related example Geoff Ramsey was an alcoholic (he's talked about having to drink a lot in the morning to get going) and then one day realised that had to stop and quit drinking within a month and hasn't relapsed despite going through a divorce.

Without you elaborating on what you mean I can't really respond to that point.

@ Rebelfaction

It would seem that the Grimm have certain regional variants to them, with the Manticore's and Beowulfs in Atlas having more bone plating on them than on Anima or Sanus. This is likely to insulate them, since according to the World of Remnant of Mantle, the one thing that kept the Grimm at bay for a long time was the frigidness of the Tundra freezing Grimm solid.

I believe bone plates have been used to establish the age of some Grimm, with Monty saying at a Q&A that the Beowolves not having any in the Red Trailer was because they were essentially newborns. Of course this is contradicted by the opening of Volume 4 but that might come down to a difference in where they're born which circles back to your observation and now we've come full circle.

Also, did Neon get a new VA?

I thought so too but I checked the credits and it's still Meg Turney.

Speaking of living at the academy... am I the only one questioning why Weiss sleeps with that braid?

She sleeps with it so she doesn't have to redo it in the morning.

Just like Amber, Fria is a slowly dying Maiden, and for the sake of keeping her powers from going to someone else, a new Maiden has been selected in advance from someone handpicked by an Academy Headmaster, an Aura Transfer unit has been set up, and Fria will be allowed to die once they have fused her Aura with the new Maiden.

I'm not sure where you got that impression from. There's nothing to suggest they'll try the same trick with Amber and transferring the power artificially, Winter's comment that she might die at any moment and how she's the only one allowed to see her indicates/overtly states that they're going to let the process complete naturally and are having Winter build up a connection and be the literal only person Fria sees so that she'll be the last one in her thoughts. The painting next to her bed is a nice touch. I initially thought it would be of Winter's face to keep her in mind, but it's instead a winter landscape, so perhaps a less in your face solution. Or Fria is an art lover.

On an aside I remember when the news Cristina Vee would voice a character broke the number of people in the main thread who kept talking about how she would have two lines and die, Even though that was based on faulty logic disproved four years ago, it's a tiny bit satisfying to see the naysayers wrong (even if I thought she would have voiced either Mrs. Schnee or the Winter Maiden).

Yeah my guess is that the plan regarding the winter maiden is ensure that old maiden has contact with just winter to ensure an increased chance that her last thoughts would be on tbe young woman that has been spending time with her throughout her final moments.

I actually suspect that even the current winter maiden is aware of this plan since it would be odd for the maidens to not know of how the transfer works also.

It is very similar to Amber just less problematic since Amber was in a more complicated situation regarding her maiden powers and there were more unknown variables to consider like half the powers automatically going to the other half of you tried the normal method.

There actually is an Aura Transfer unit identical to the one from V3 in Fria's room.

Knowing Ironwood it makes sense. He isnt going to leave something like this to even the most minuscule chance.

But given Fria's name, she actually probably has a connection to Nora

I'm not sure where you got that impression from.
What Slater said. There is literally a pair of Aura Transfer chambers right next to the door. And Ironwood wouldn't leave shit to chance since even if Winter is the only one seeing Fria, there's still the chance the last person in her thoughts will be a relative or someone else she knows. The Aura Transfer chamber leaves less to chance in his eyes, the same reason why they were wary about Amber just up and dying, since even if the powers didn't go to Cinder, they'd have no way of knowing where the hell the went.

Okay, I did not notice the two units on my first viewing and based it solely off the dialogue and the rest of the room. Since the equipment is there I have to ask why they haven't already done the transfer there. Winter made it sound like she could die any day now, yet Ironwood allowed Winter to go all the way out to the mine anyway. If the aura transference machine is the plan why haven't they pulled the trigger already rather than risk Fria dying before Winter could get to her?

CaptainCapsase from Orbiting Sagittarius A* Since: Jan, 2015
#1225: Nov 30th 2019 at 3:07:12 PM

[up] Possibly because they don't really know the consequences of transferring the maiden's powers in that fashion; they only considered doing it when there weren't other options. What they're doing now meanwhile has been their preferred way of doing things since day one, and if it works reliably there's no reason to change the procedure.

The aura transference is an option they can use if the Winter maiden slips into a coma, for example. The rub though is that, realistically, that's the default for people dying in a hospital setting, they don't go from conscious to dead, they fall into a coma and don't wake up. In fact people dying from most causes don't go to conscious to dead short of decapitation or other catastrophic head injuries. That's kind of a problem with most media though, it's less dramatic when someone gets shot in the leg, falls unconscious from shock, then dies 12 hours later in a hospital after never waking up.
