     Releases from: 2020
  • We recently discovered that a non-US IP address was hitting us with thousands of SQL injection attempts, none of which succeeded. They did, however, put additional load on the database. This wasn't intended as a DDoS attack per se but rather an attempt to take control of the site.

  • The administrators activated additional security measures on our Cloudflare firewall that have had the unintended side-effect of causing frequent ReCAPTCHA prompts for users. We are aware of this problem and working on a resolution.

     Releases from: 2019
Apr 10th:
  • Improvements to new user registrations and the user experience when suspended or banned. See this post for details.

Mar 21th:

  • The adblocker bug (popup message) will now appear for logged-in users after a certain threshold of page views has occurred while blocking ads.
    • You may snooze the bug for up to 7 days at a time if you have contributed to the wiki (by editing articles) recently.
  • There is now a subscription option to use TV Tropes ad-free for certain periods (monthly, yearly).
    • You can use this link to access the subscription system.
    • Subscriptions use a third-party payment facilitator called Stripe. TV Tropes does not collect or store any of your payment information. You will be rebilled at the indicated interval unless you cancel.
    • Subscriptions are linked to your account. If you change accounts, or are banned, you will lose your subscription.
    • Additional subscription options are being considered or are in development.
    • The badge advertised as a reward for subscribing appears not to be working currently.
    • To unsubscribe, send a message to "The Staff" via our contact form. Additional cancellation options are forthcoming.
  • Users who received one year of ad-free usage as a perk for contributing to the Kickstarter campaign at the 25 USD tier or higher will no longer have that perk. (The 95+ USD lifetime perk is not affected.)

  • The edit lock icon now appears and performs correctly on all views of an article, not just the primary one.
  • namespace_index.php pagination now works as expected.
  • [Moderation] Moderators can now view substantially more accounts queued for approval, so we shouldn't lose them any more.

Jan 8th:

  1. Added pagination to all namespaces.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/mods.php?a=Main.YesPrettyCure5

2. Got rid of bloated 3rd party adblock message and created our own to alert non-members when their adblock is on. To test, visit any two pages, while not logged in with your adblocker on.
== END: RICHARD ==

== CHRIS ==
1. Enable caching system for server - If you are NOT logged-in you'll receive a cached page from the server which can be as old as 3 minutes old. Unless you submit a form then it will bypass the caching system. This should greatly reduce the server load so it doesn't have to dynamically build the page for every pageview millions of times per day. The future versions should cache trope/forum pages for everyone and then rebuild it only when something changes.
2. Remove unused pixels (ie: comscore, retargeting, etc.)
== END: CHRIS ==

== TOM ==
1. Fixed 'Avatar sharing bug' where users were able to share avatars with other users that did not have the 'avatar sharing' feature enabled in their account.

3. Redirect pages can now be edited without an error being displayed.
4. Protection against cross-site scripting like this: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WesternAnimation/%22%3E%3Cbody_____onload_=___alert%28%27xss%27%29%3E
5. Setup new email account to contact Moderators and made changes to the 'Contact Us' form to support it. 6. Cutting a page no longer deletes links to it's related pages.
7. Fixed errors in the error log and slow query log.
8. removal of all anti-vandalism page-locking code.
== END TOM ==

[up] We've asked about the changes, but those functions are largely irrelevant to unregistered users, so I don't really see the point in exposing them. Also, they probably aren't cached, so would create unnecessary additional load on the servers. Let me put it this way: what advantage is gained by letting people use them while not logged in? Just log in, and you're fine.

Another vote for "please do not have videos autoplay by default." People really don't like that, and it could drive a lot of newbies from the site.

Honestly I think the whole idea of video examples is unnecessary; if a video demonstrates a trope, it can be linked to or described. But I'm not the one coding it.

[tup] Opt-in autoplaying, off by default, perhaps alongside the sidebar display options. I know that audio is disabled unless the video is clicked on, but I fear for loading times.

What's the planned format for these videos? There's a difference between two seconds of animation, and ten minutes of people sitting around a table communicating ideas entirely through audio. I'm not saying Vine, but it seems like a good idea to establish a maximum length early.

If a user sees a video which doesn't illustrate the trope (or if the trope is reworked so that it no longer fits), how would they go about getting it removed? There's also a risk of video creators becoming invested in their work and getting mad if anyone tries to remove it or change how it's used.

Yeah, please don't force auto-playing videos. That'll cause more problems than it's worth.

Also... can we please get our subscriber badges already?

Edit: Prime 82 [up] also makes some good points. I'm worried about how these videos will affect...well, a lot of things... and some limits and standards will be appreciated.

[up][up][up] You're barking up the wrong tree here, the moderators are not involved with site changes. The admins have ignored the userbase after the storm of critique about the ad-blocker pop-up and it's likely they will ignore users complaining about auto-playing videos.

[up][up] We've heard nothing from the admins about it, so it's very likely the pop-up is here to stay. You can snooze it for a week after you've made an edit.

~Prime32: I have seen the dev site and looked at the feature myself. The videos we have in mind are clips from movies and TV shows that demonstrate the trope. Any such clip would presumably be associated with an actual text example in the main body of the article.

Let's say that the trope Soft Glass has an example from TV Tropes The TV Show wherein Alice smashes through a glass window without hurting herself. The video example could be a clip of that scene. It could be however long it needs to be to adequately illustrate the example, although Fair Use would prevent us from using shows in their entirety and basic taste would suggest keeping them to no more than a few minutes in length.

You will be able to play or pause the video, control volume, move forward or backward in it, and select other video examples to watch them instead. The video player will have a feedback tool built in. This tool will let you indicate whether you like or dislike the video and submit text comments. You can also report the article as you would any other, using the tool in the sidebar, whereupon the mods will see it and take appropriate action.

Since the submissions for video examples will be limited to moderators and staff (at least for the time being), we hope that you would not often encounter a video example that is offensive or wildly unrepresentative of the trope.

Edited to correct something: The basic embedded player will not have any controls on it. Clicking or tapping will open a full-featured player as an overlay. This appears to also pause the original video. Essentially, the on-page widget is more like a low-res animation than an actual video player.

Since today (I think), the placement of "edit lock expires in XX:YY" is aligned to the left, rather than the center. Is this intentional? See this.

Also, I'm unable to add images; after pressing "Submit", nothing happens (and no, trying to copy what the image's code would be does nothing).

Hi, folks. Not mentioned yesterday is that we fixed some more permissions issues.

There are some more issues under investigation. Because of these, I've asked the developers to perform a full review to make sure we didn't miss anything else. Please continue to report any problems you come across.

Mostly it comes down to a fundamental miscommunication of the website and its sense of ownership and purpose.

  1. Users — These are the people the website is for. It is completely free and accessible to everyone in the world, except where their network providers have safeties (school firewalls or national blocks). Users can read any trope/work page, even on the subwiki portions, like Pantheon or Darthwiki. This is 99% of wiki traffic. It is the goal that 99% of wiki traffic is this, as we want to be a website people are encouraged to visit for information on Tropes. When traffic drops, due to stuff like Google deciding not to send people to us, that's bad for non-monetary reasons.
  2. Contributers — These are the people that help this website grow. They do the grunt work around here, like fetching coffee and Cross Wicking. Recently, joining the contributers allowed access to the ability to pay a subscription fee which removes advertisements from appearing. It's also supposed to get you a badge, but the devs haven't made that a priority it seems. :(
  3. Moderators — Middle-management types, they're tasked with the job of keeping the wiki going, even when the higher-ups aren't speaking with them. One of the previous devs retired to Contributer status, but they've been slowly worked back into moderator status, but they're just sweeping things up in the corners, not posting very often.
  4. Developers/Owners — These are the people trying to keep the wiki in the black, despite daily/weekly ddos attacks, server issues, outdated coding, full-time jobs at a family-sized small business, and playing wack-a-mole with advertising software that lies to them.

The Devs lost a lot a sympathy from me when they didn't keep to a regular schedule of contact with their Contributers, instead lumping almost everyone into a "userbase" criterion that they want to surprise every so often. I like that they don't make frequent unanimous rules, but instead they make infrequent wiki overhauls without announcing changes to the beta server first so that it can be tested. Ads appear to affect everyone equally, but the difference between the mobile userbase and the computer userbase is amazing. I assume my observations hold true for the Users, but the Contributers appear to experience frequent malicious redirection while on mobile devices, whereas the desktop ads have pretty much all been tamed to comply with the goals explained on the Advertising Issues thread. Users do not have access to the subscription choice, so we're crowding out part of our market by allowing the annoying/malicious advertising.

I think I ended up ranting more than talking. Sorry about that.
