Couldn't find anyone else talking about this, so here goes!

Did you ever think a movie meshing elements from Inglourious Basterds, Wolfenstein, and Re-Animator sounds like a unholy triple threat of body horror nightmares that'd be worth your time?

J. J. Abrams thought so, thus we're getting Overlord, a WWII horror movie that doesn't have any connections to the Cloverfield series, but is quite literally its own beast. Honestly, J.J. Abrams has been quoted as saying it's "batshit crazy."

In a nutshell, American paratroopers are ordered to infiltrate a Nazi base on the eve of D-Day, but things get complicated.

And then they get horrifying.

And then weird.

And then horrifying AND weird.

Fandom's talked about it a few months back. (Please DON'T read if you're easily squeamish.)

And here's a trailer... (Please DON'T watch if you're easily squeamish.)

...Actually, you know what? It's awfully late. Maybe we should all just put a pin on watching any trailers for this movie until tomorrow in the daytime. It'd be a shame if we suddenly got night terrors regarding Nazis and mad science and body horror, am I right?

[up]

I watched it. Huh, either I'm a bit of a Nightmare Fetishist who's better at tanking squeamish stuff than I thought, or everyone else is a wimp.

I winced slightly at that one dude smiling while missing a chunk of his face, but all in all it barely phased me.

Reminds me of Resident Evil.

...I'm sold. This strangely looks like a more well-made B-movie Nazisplotation music brought to life.

The use of Hell's Bells helped, I'll confess.

Huh. That trailer was a lot tamer than I was expecting (guys with shit-eating grins losing a big chunk of their faces notwithstanding).

Actually, it looked more badass than anything. Maybe it's a marketing ploy to lure everyone with promises of guns and heavy metal and Nazis getting their plans foiled/asses getting kicked, only to have the first and last thing while replacing the heavy metal with blood-curling horrors...

In any case, I'm probably not watching this without someone or if I was dared to watch it for $500.

EDIT: NVM.

Double posting to say I've made a page for this movie.

And I also have to say, as much as I'm worried this movie will scare me shitless, I have to give it credit for introducing me to the song "Hells Bells".

That song kicks major ass.

Bumping this thread for some brief updates:

  • Some posters have been making the rounds lately, like this one. (What look like random blood splatters are actually drops of blood conveying the image of a plane dropping off paratroopers. Artistically creepy, no?)
  • Also, the movie seems to have already had its premiere on September 22, 2018 at something called Fantastic Fest, which is said to be "the largest genre film festival in the U.S. specializing in horror, fantasy, sci-fi, action and just plain fantastic movies from all around the world."
  • Because of that, the movie has (as of October 1, 2018,) a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%, based on 13 fresh ratings and 1 rotten rating.

I think this is the first time I've seen a Rotten Tomatoes score touted in a trailer.

This was a fun movie. It didn't do anything new, and it wasn't any more than what the trailers show, but it's one of the better action/horror hybrids I've seen in a while.
