1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

While I'm well aware of the fact that the spoilers button is now located in the profile, the website still hides spoilers even when it's flicked on. This problem only happens on Internet Explorer, not on my mobile phone or on Chrome.

I'd give it about a week or two to iron every major bug out.

Aside from that, I do like how the pages look though... Although the color choices for the subpages could be a bit better but that's an aesthetic choice that could be fixed later on.

[up][up][up] (masterofchaos) I hate to say it, but "feedback" and "sarcastically asking for the changes to be undone every other page" are not synonymous. While KoopaGirl's intentions may have been good, there is a point where you get tired of reading it.

[down][down] It seemed like a rather needed reality check, and that Angrok was as annoyed with the repetitive posts as KoopaGirl is with the update.

Can we all stop yelling at each other now? proceed with yelling about the update together if you want

~King Koopa Girl: He wasn't being mean; that would've required him to actively insult/demean you. He was being blunt, or brutally honest to use a trope, about how counterproductive and generally non-useful your incessant and repetitive complaining is.

@Anrgok Va That really wasn't necessary. This is a drastic and forced change. It's only natural that people are going to be upset about it.

Some bugs I haven't seen mentioned:

  • Some trope pages fail to load the description and list of works. This happened to me on desktop Firefox and mobile Chrome.

  • I created a new page for a work, but attempts to crosswick it don't show up on its Related page (it's been approximately an hour now). This includes indexing. The crosswicks I've added work correctly, they just aren't showing up.

Where's my 'Show Spoilers' checkbox? It was useful for uninterrupted browsing.

Also, I better check on All Blue Entry now that links are blue for Night Mode.

@masterofchaos: Yes, and feedback is only useful when it's constructive and adds something new to the discussion, not when it repeats vague "don't like this, please change back"-type statements ad nauseum.

[up] x etc Yes, but frequently requesting the admins to revert back to the previous layout might not help.

Actually talking about what bugs you've encountered is constructive criticism.

One person saying (essentially) the same thing over and over isn't helpful in the slightest.

EDIT: Marq knows where I was going with that, kind of. I mean, we're all a little on edge, right now.

[up][up] Telling someone to shut up isn't necessary, though.

And with that I'm gonna stop coming to the thread. I think the admins got the point now. Hopefully things do get better; I was mostly concerned about the login glitch, lol.

Latest buglist iteration:

  • The "Featured Trope of the Day" has changed for a third time. You'd expect something "Of the day" to last 24 hours.

  • color text in quotes is unreadable with single line breaks.

  • And it STILL looks ugly as hell on iPad Mini - with its 640x480 screen resolution the sidebar takes almost half of the screen when in landscape mode.

  • Even worse on my LG G6, where it takes up nearly the whole screen...

  • follow-up on the flag/star TLP function, I've now found it. However, there's three distinct issues with it: 1. it only displays next to the name and laconic on the main page, not on the draft itself, which is the place where you're likely to think 'I want to watch this', 2. It's now called an upvote (shown as [tup]), which obviously has positive connotations when I might be following it for negative reasons (e.g. it got unlaunched), 3. IT DOESN'T WORK

  • Is it just me, or have all the pictures been shrunk? It's actually hard to look at.

  • The lack of boxes on posts makes it really hard to read, it's more of a Youtube or Tumblr comment section than a forum.

  • There's way too much blank space. After every trope on a work list there's way too much blank space between entries (while meanwhile further bullet points are just bunched up together) and quotes that use multiple lines are also divided by too much white space making them look weird. It all just looks very ugly.

  • Forums appear to allow me to post and NOT post at total random. Sometimes it just gives me a window that says "this discussion is set to private". I tried to post this very post MANY times!

  • Display options found in the side bar keep resetting and I am unable to pull up any of the usual account options when clicking on the avatar in the upper right hand corner. I only see logout and message. The rest pushes up out of view.

PC Windows 7/IE 11.

  • Since I now have the screenshot of the cutoff bug, here it is: https://prnt.sc/jzqte9

  • The site Title Search function isn't working right now. The page doesn't want to load, and when it does, searches always come back saying not to put quotes around terms.

Edit On desktop, checked with Opera and Microsoft Edge.

  • The captions in WMG in Night Mode are white font on light grey background and thus quite hard to read.

  • Every time I close Firefox I get logged out. Also, and I'm starting to think this is just me because I've heard no one else complain about this, I have no blinking text cursor when I type a post or edit a page.

  • the text size in the sidebar of the mobile site, could we maybe bring it down a bit?

  • Basically, when I try to log in on Safari, the screen darkens and...that's it. It's like the little login box is SUPPOSED to pop up, but never actually does.

  • on the wiki’s dropdown menu, the “edit page” logo overlaps the text (I can upload a screenshot if anyone requests).

  • Also, have just discovered that I'm getting the "Please disable your ad blocker"-message when not logged in even though I have Tv Tropes whitelisted and am not having any issues with it when logged in.

Using Chrome on a desktop PC, if that helps.

  • the random media button seems to be missing on Mobile

  • Attempting to preview page edits does not do anything.
- Poor visibility of various features in Night Vision due to garish pale backgrounds with pale writing including my own most recent forum post (unless I edit it) and at least one mod post. - New formatting for bulleted lists makes for poor readability (at the ** to *** bullet range) - Redirects aren't working

  • Related pages are no longer being removed even when I remove the trope from them.

  • Gold text is semi transparent and barely readable in night mode.

  • 'Add Post' buttons are randomly appearing and disappearing whenever I load different threads, on Firefox, including this thread-had to browse 3 pages to find one with a button to make this post.

  • I like how when I go to the bulletin list the link is broken.

  • Not sure if this has been reported yet, but I just searched something on Mozilla on a computer while in night mode, and the results section was still in blinding white. Kinda defeats the point of night mode.

  • Avatar previews on the Profile page are broken. When I right-click the broken image and select "View Image," the directory is https://static.tvtropes.orghttps//static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/(avatar filename) (which is a nonsensical, nonexistent redirect).

  • Not sure if this has been reported yet, but Trope Launch Pad drafts now have barely-readable text on Night-Vision mode.

  • the Mark All As Read button in the main Forum page is too close to the Following button, I've accidentally clicked on it a few times already which would be bad if it actually worked.

  • It seems like that T Vtropes doesn't work on my Chrome unless I use the Incognito tab or Firefox. IT works on Firefox but I am not sure about Edge.

  • I'd also like a more obvious indicator of unread posts in a forum. The green check marks were much easier to see that the current bolding.

  • Some of the "Open/Close All Folders"tabs appear in places that mean they can't be clicked. Happened here: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Funny/SaturdayNightLiveSeason42

Also, the 'default: folders open' tab in profile doesn't seem to be defaulting keeping folders open.

Also, redirects and some external links such as to imgur do not seem to be working.

  • The mobile site doesn't work on my phone browser; it doesn't load properly, as seen here.

Since drewski asked for more specific information, I've got an LG X Charge and I'm using Opera. I'm pretty sure it's some problem with Opera specifically, 'cause I tried Chrome and it worked just fine there.

  • Can also confirm on Firefox, closing the browser and restarting kicks out your login. Currently using the most up to date version, so if there are any other Firefox specific bugs let me know and I can check them on Win 7 home premium.

  • EDIT: Just noticed something else when editing this post- when you click the little emoticon buttons to add emoticon markup, the text cursor jumps to the end of your post instead of staying after the markup. I'm pretty sure that wasn't an issue before.

  • Another nitpick but some of the pictures have large blank white spaces next to them. For example: Spoilers Off It looks like something is supposed to be there but isn't. Again, just an aesthetic nitpick. Not really important in the grand scheme of things.

I'm using Chrome on Windows 8.1.

  • Bug report: accessing a troper's Avatar Gallery through their Troper Page displays avatars piled on top of one another, as well as the page numbers on the bottom of the screen. Accessing the Avatar Gallery through my profile displays avatars in rows and columns just fine, and page numbers are side-by-side as well, though without either the share or delete options. Oh! I just noticed the last two avatars showing up on Avatar Gallery through Troper Page are missing from Avatar Gallery through Profile. Instead, they show up on the next page. Picture. Chrome, Windows 8.1.

  • I also wasn't able to find a 'cancel edit' button while in edit mode.

  • Every page that starts with commented out text (like Obvious Beta and Deconstruction Fic) is missing ALL the text.

  • A minor glitch, but whenever someone edits a post, the time always says AM when it should be PM (according to my timezone).

  • Hey, I think I've found a new bug - there's an obscure formatting method for adding infoboxes to the side of an article, which I think I've only ever seen on Video Game.Fallout. It's now broken and displays all the content as normal text at the top of the article. Fun!

  • On a relatively minor note, the message at the top of Ask the Tropers saying "For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here." is broken — the link points to a page that doesn't exist.

  • On an Android 7.1.2 phone, using a couple of different browsers including Chrome Dev 69.0.3464.0, I'm having trouble staying logged in.

  • Some bugs I haven't seen mentioned:

[up][up][up][up] Yes, like some people's fantastically useful snide comments implying how we should all be grateful for an update that literally nobody asked for and is now hampering people's enjoyment of the site, just on the merit that 'coding is hard.'

Seriously though, the folders REALLY need to stand out more. The curved rectangular buttons were just fine. Now the headers stand out even less than Wikipedia.

Posting on I Phone (can’t log in on my laptop):

So I’m sure by now just about everything I have to say has been said, but in case it hasn’t: I would really like to be able to change the page I’m on in a thread without having to scroll all the way to the bottom. Previous setup had page buttons at the top and bottom, and that was very user friendly.

Also, as someone with color vision deficiencies, I greatly prefer having a check mark next to newly updated threads over the current blue vs gray thread titles.

Latest version of Chrome, latest version of High Sierra, 2013 Macbook Pro, for device context.

The site seems to be basically visually usable for me - I'm not seeing the massive functionality issues a lot of people are having on Chrome. Obviously the inability to edit pages is a problem, but I can browse the wiki in what appears to be the intended manner. The only problem I'm having that looks like an actual glitch is the thing where my profile shows a broken image instead of my avatar.

I am not personally a fan of the dark background to the header. It makes the search engine hard to use because with my screen brightness down, there's basically no contrast between the background, the search window, and the text in the search window. On the old version, I could see the white/black contrast easily. Once all the other function-affecting bugs are worked out, I'd appreciate a light version of the header.

Hey guys, on the subject of All Blue Entry...

Red links aren't red anymore, so the Darth Wiki page isn't doing it's job. I'm on chrome if that helps. Is this happening for any of you?

[up]Red and blue links were switching out for me seemingly at random, but appear to be fixed now. Some are now red links where they should have been before but weren't (if they were in the wrong namespace, for example).

Can I also say that I do like the folders, but not on every page

I've been trying to find a way to search for posts of tropers like you could before, but I have yet to find a proper way to?

Perhaps I'm missing it, but it's no longer next to the ability to search the forums.

Is there something that could be done about that?

Oh, and the site has become usable on my Chrome. I'm not sure what changed, but that's something at least.

Also these page preferences don't seem to carry over whenever I refresh the page or go to a different one.
