1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

Mine's saying I joined on that date too, when I joined either August 28th or 29th, 2017 (Can't recall which).

And as a whole I greatly prefer the previous version of the site. It would be very, very, very nice to have the option to go back to it.

Also don't know if it's been said before, but sub-bullet paragraphs look like they run on and blend into each other, when it didn't look like they did that before. I don't exactly remember what it looked like before, but I think stuff after the first line had the same level of indentation as the first line, and there might have been more space in between sub-bullets. Right now, that stuff does not look pleasing to read compared to before.

Eagal that seems to be when you try to post more than once without leaving the thread, possibly to deter spamming

Yinyang 107: see my post here

TropeYoshi, I'm also not having that issue, are you on a browser where things commonly go above the page? Because that is the driving force of the bugs you've reported.

I think the last major purge happened in April 2012, perhaps all accounts have accidentally been set to that...

I should also mention that, when I tried to edit Super Smash Bros' And The Fandom Rejoiced page, I tried to check the edit page to see how it worked now. The edit page was way too big all of a sudden, and I checked the preview button to see if it worked. It didn't. So I cancelled my edit because I didn't wanna waste my time, and the page was locked that way too! So what, any attempt to edit the page is gonna be met with an automatic lock even if you do nothing?

My join date is also April 2012......I don't know when I joined, but this is an extremely minor thing, compared to all the other crap that's going on here.

Honestly, the thing that gets me is that I cannot think of one thing genuinely improved by this update — a risk or problem that's gone away or a feature that now works better. All the changes have either been trivial and unimpactful or objectively negative: the page formats look terrible, the editing is unmanageable — in my case, when I hit "save" the site just reloads the editing window with all my edits undone — and there's so many bugs I could swear I'm in a beehive.

I honestly cannot see how this update benefits the site. Could whoever is in charge of this please revert the changes and retry this when the bugs are worked out and the deleterious features have been addressed?

I'd add that in feature to improve, the light grey used for people's location and relationship status is so pale it's really hard to read without straining or switching to nightvision mode (The grey is so pale it renders better on dark grey, yes.) I hate to imagine how bad it is for any user with vision problems. That grey is also used a bunch of other places... and it shouldn't be.

I don't hate the new update (or rather, I wouldn't hate it if it worked properly), but there's a lot to improve. As mentioned before, the speech bubble forum is kinda lame, the forums in general feel like there's a lot of wasted space because of it. Quotemarks no longer being a box is also a downgrade as one can't italicize in them, and they are in the same nigh-unreadable pale grey you guys picked.

Oh, also the Open/Close folder option is too damn small.

Like, I do think this update can be made to work (I like the headers and folder styles) but there's questionable design decisions here along with the numerous outlined bugs.

Oh, another bug: sometimes I add a post, it save, and it brings me back to the version of the thread before I posted, without my post on it. I need to reload the thread (either by going back and re-selecting it) or refreshing for the thread to show my post.

I tried to Follow pages (including this forum) and it hasn't saved any of them.

Also, the "have folders Open" option doesn't appear to be working.

And none of the pages I have followed say they have been edited even though I checked the History they clearly have been.

What a mess...

I have relayed this to the other staff in our private chat area, but I'll post it here so normal users will know.

The page where cut requests are processed does not work. I tried to process some cuts after the update, only for it to do nothing when I confirm the action. Not only is the item still listed, the page also remains.

The open/close folder is also barely noticeable in general. And if you're looking at a forum with a crowner hooked, the crowner has lost its borders so is just a piece of grey text to expand... negative functionality.

I'm logged in on my desktop instead of my tablet like usual, because the login wasn't working on the latter, as others have reported. (The browsers in question are Chrome and Safari respectively; the latter matches the previous report of this issue.) And like some others have also noted, I was logged in as some random other troper for no reason at one point.

Also, where's the save button for profile changes? And my avatar won't show up in my profile (also already reported).

But hey, the 1.8 site version's only been up for less than a day, it'll naturally be full of glitches that'll be fixed eventually.

At least they made some stuff better - for example, the history button is no longer pushed away on work pages by the review button, and is no longer invisible unless you hover over it...
