Hey,

I both write (The Bright Falls Mysteries, Literature/Esoterrorism) and read urban fantasy and some favorite series. I was curious what your favorites in the genre are. My favorites are the very commonly beloved:

  • Dresden Files
  • Mercedes Thompson
  • The Helloquin Chronicles
  • The Hollows

What are your favorites?

I find UF kinda hit/miss, but I sometimes read it. Read the first three Dresden books, for example, but the series didn't really catch me.

Larry Correia's Monster Hunter International, though, had me at the first paragraph.

On one otherwise normal Tuesday evening I had the chance to live the American dream. I was able to throw my incompetent jackass of a boss from a fourteenth-story window.

The series is basically founded on the premise of "what if people in monster stories weren't Too Dumb to Live?", and that all the monsters of myth and fiction actually exist. With sufficient courage and firepower, they can also be killed.

I like that as well.

I've heard good things about that series.

I was debating checking it out next.

Dresden Files is easily my top pick. I think books one to three are decent enough, but you can tell he really is a new writer trying to get comfortable in his style, and book 4 is where (IMO) he find his groove and the series hits its stride. And they only get better from there.

Second, and a very close runner up to be honest, considering it might be technically better even if I like DF more is the Rivers Of London series. I particularly like how the protagonist wizards are basically part of the normal police force (rather than the usual Private Detectives or whatever), and that magic is pretty much an open secret within the force.

Tried the Iron Druid Chronicles briefly, but I got the feeling that the main character was basically an amoral power (and sexual) fantasy, and what I've heard about him since hasn't changed my mind, and I'm just not interested in that.

Read through quite a few books of The Hollows, but too much emotional trauma for me by the end. When it reached the point where the MC's vampire BF had to whore herself out to stop another more powerful vampire from raping/feeding on the MC, I walked away. That just made me feel sick.

Monster Hunter International was a fun action book, if you can (and oh, I could!) look past the fact it's very transparently a self-insert piece for the author - since both he and the MC share the same boring soul-sucking job they manage to get away from, all the main characters share his anti-government/very-small-government views, his Mormon faith is given a big baddass moment, and his giant hard-on for guns is obviously and lavishly displayed on ever page). I got it off Kindle for free, and it was awesome. Can't argue with that.

Artemis Fowl technically counts as UF. And that's an amazing series.

I've tried to give Skulduggery Pleasant a college try, but I think I'm too old for it tbh. It seems to be aimed at 10-12 year olds.

So much to choose from.

The Dresden books definitely, L. A Banks Vampire Huntress Legend, Correia's Monster Hunter International, Anita Blake Yes it became little more than porn after a while but IMHGO it's improved again, cut back the sex somewhat and increasing characterization and plot), also her Merry Gentry series, Tad Williams '' Bobby Dollar series and, if you want a lighter take on the genre, anything by Christopher Moore.

Who Censored Roger Rabbit? is one of my favorites. I recently bought this amazing limited edition from Centipede Press. (I tried to change the page image to the new cover art, which is way better than the old, but apparently we're not allowed to do that until someone works out the bugs in the new site layout.)

I also like the Thursday Next series, which is one of the most original things I've read in my life and something I wish I'd created myself, even if the fifth book is the last truly good one.

Honestly, urban fantasy is probably my favorite genre in theory, but one tires of elves and dragons, and that's usually what you find on the fantasy shelves. It's a genre I'd like to write someday, but the well of my imagination has run a little dry.

Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Robin Mckinley, Sunshine. Standalone, but far, far better world building in one volume than most urban fantasy manages in 6 books. Also just generally really good, because it is Mckinley.

The Kitty series, because it features characters who do have some respect for the law and the sanctity of life. Also, just fun.
