I'm no prude. I like boobs. I swear like a fuckin' sailor. I think dicks are frequently hilarious.

But is it just me that thinks that maybe the name of this trope being a pun on "date rape" is in slightly poor taste?

This was already discussed here.

I'm not personally offended, but I do think it's in bad taste.

The previous thread decided that adding an accent over the e removed the pun, but I disagree since it's still pronounced the same way.

The title seems fine to me and it is a serious date thing, to the point where its been used as symbolism for an unknowing couple in Amagami SS where the couple are talking about if they are on a date or not while eating crepes.

At most I could see an s added to it.

Date Crepes sounds a lot better since "rape" is not pluralized very often so it isn't as obviously bad. And usually, both of the people on the date have a crepe so it makes sense to pluralize it.

Its a bit less accurate since the trope usually ends up with someone trying the other's crepe, them sharing one, or the guy just buying the girl one.

I find the current name to be fine. Crepes doesn't even sound like rape.

[up] "Crepes" doesn't, but "crepe" does, this the suggestion to change.

I suppose it depends on how you pronounce ‘Crepe’.

Last time this issue came up we added the ^ sign to indicate it's not spelled like "rape".

The problem isn't the spelling, it's the pronunciation. Just because some people don't say it right, doesn't change that it does sound like rape when pronounced correctly, and the fact that it used to be on the Just For Pun index according to the old thread means that this was intentional.

Any drive by troper could have added it to that index at any time actually.

I think it's fine. I don't think there's a risk of people misunderstanding the trope because of it. I don't think all names have to be completely politically correct in all ways possible.

[up] That seems like a weird way to describe a pointless date rape reference.

Except it is not. It is a crepe that you buy on a date, the name builds itself.

After thinking on it if we must change it I would say more Date At The Creperie although it loses a little meaning in it, I still don't think we do need to change it.

I don't see a reason to change the name. A lot of work for no gain.

Health sure is versatile. It's possible to be both light-headed and dim-witted. At the same time, no less.

1. It's not a rare pronunciation. I'd say the majority of the English-speaking world says "crayp". It's listed as the primary US pronunciation on Wiktionary.
2. This is the case for both spellings, because accents are optional in established English borrowings. Nobody pronounces the word differently based on whether it is spelled with an accent nor not.
3. Even if it were a coincidence, a lot of people (see 1) are going to read it in such a way that it looks like a deliberate pun. So for all intents and purposes, it is a pun, regardless of whether it was meant to be.
4. It's a skeevy pun.

If people keep telling you your personalised number plate is an obscure racial slur, just get it changed. Your argument that it wasn't intended that way achieves nothing except to get you off the hook this time; it won't stop the next person who sees it from keying your car.

PS: 5. It was totally deliberate, though.

Going by the Longman pronunciation dictionary, crepe does indeed rhyme with rape, and in that case the pun is obvious. As Wikipedia notes, however, there are various possible pronunciations which do not rhyme. I am generally used to the French version.

I think the accent will make the intended word much clearer.

Optimism is a duty.

Does the current spelling "Date Crêpe" and the note on Just For Pun to not add this trope help with the issue? Clocking to ask.

Will close for now.
