@ Beatman1, ironically Western animation used have the opposite problem, with all the conflicts being so black and white, all the villains were just one-note bad guys.

Here is what I say, a good rogues gallery needs a combination of sympathetic and unsympathetic villains, with Batman for every Mr. Freeze you have a Joker. You can't make all your villains evil, that's boring, but if all the villains are sympathetic, it can take the steam out of the conflict.

I am fine with what they have done with Shadow Weaver, Scorpia, Hordak, and Catra, but I think we need some new blood for the villains, Horde Prime and his squad of psychopathic lieutenants could make this conflict more dire for the heroes.

Also if you want a villain to contrast Entrapta, its got to be Modulok:

https://he-man.fandom.com/wiki/Modulok

Originally a generic bad guy, Modulok was made into a Mad Scientist for the Filmation cartoons, have him keep that role, but the difference between him and Entrapta is he knows what he is doing is wrong and does not care. Entrapta seeing someone totally immoral, who wields science without compassion and is completely cruel in his methods, may just make her realize the error of her ways.

On the topic of Modulok, it is true that in the old He-Man/She-Ra cartoons from the 80s he was a mad scientist, but his toy had a unique feature. He was made of 22 assorted limbs, heads and torsos that you could put together in any combination. So he could be a regular guy with two arms, two legs and one head, or he could have four arms, two six legs and two heads. I think that having him be a shape-shifting monster that constantly grows new appendages is a way cooler idea than having him be a mad scientist. Would be a pain to animate though.

[up] To be fair, he could be both those things, one of those things deals characterization, the other is with abilities, they do not negate each other. Maybe make him like Apocalypse from X-Men, where he can change his hands into weapons, but only does that during combat and has a default form that he uses most of the time.

I think in the original cartoon he could transform into various (goofy looking) robots, I could either this version (or Horde Prime) having the ability to transform into biomechanical horrors as a reference.

[up] Hordak had shape-changing powers in the Filmation cartoon, he could turn his hands into weapons, turn into a living tank, all sorts of things. May as well give that power to Modulok. Maybe Modulok is a Mad Scientist who altered his own body to give himself shapeshifting powers. That would make for an impressive villain, shapeshifting powers and a devious mind.

In a shocking piece of He-Man related news:

The Power returns to Netflix!

Bullet points:

  • Masters of the Universe: Revelation is an upcoming Netflix anime series.
  • No, it's not set in the world of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Instead, it takes place after the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe 80's toon.
  • Uber-nerd Kevin Smith is a showrunner!

This is proof positive He-Man’s not showing up in SPOP.

But hey, Kevin Smith? Wonder if the Snakemen will appear in this.

Is Dreamworks producing it or not?

Judging by the lack of a DreamWorks logo, I'm thinking that's a negatory. The lower right corner features a Mattel Television logo though. Not sure if that's appeared anywhere else.

Is there enough information for its own thread, too?

All we know is how it's in the same verse as the 80's MOTU cartoon, and that's it.

Honestly, I'm surprised this is coming. I thought the He-Man comeback wouldn't be until the live-action movie coming in 2 years...

EDIT: Wait, we have a synopsis!

  • Confirmed: He-Man (doy), Orko, Cringer, Man-At-Arms vs. Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, Beast Man, legions of Snake Mountain (so, Snake People?)
  • After a big freaking battle, the Sword of Power goes missing and Teela is on the hunt for it. Secret uncovering ensues!

That pretty much shuts down King Hiss appearing in SPOP.

Edit - Wait, Snake Mountain was Skeletor’s home base. It doesn’t directly confirm Snake Men.

Snake Mountain was originally owned by King Hiss and the Snake Men, but they abandoned it a long time ago. It is now occupied by Skeletor and his crew. I'm actually not sure where King Hiss and his minions live in the 80s continuity. I'm not even sure Hiss himself was in the 80s series.

Any idea what kind of tone its going to have? Like, the original He-Man was goofy. Is this going to follow suite? Or are they going for a more serious tone?

Another article spills the beans that the character designs (and animation for the show itself) will be coming from Powerhouse Animation.

For the uninitiated, Powerhouse also did the Netflix Castlevania cartoon.

Kevin Smith has gone on the record saying they're "metal." (I think as in, "heavy metal".)

YES.

I don't remember King Hiss appearing in the 80's show, at least. References to them at most, I think? It's been a while since I've seen it.

[up][up]They didn’t. The Snake Men were introduced after the show was ended. Probably why they were central villains in the 2002 reboot.

I hope they do bring in the snakemen, I enjoy the Worldbuilding they add (plus I just like snakes and other reptiles in general).

Wait, anime?

[up] Animesque, technically. Since this is coming from Castlevania's Powerhouse Animation.

http://kidscreen.com/2019/08/19/mattel-netflix-team-up-for-he-man-reboot/

Given how Kidscreen is reporting on this new He Man series, and they've never reported on any PG-13 material, it won't go the route of something like GI Resolute and target only older fans and adults. It'll be as much for kids today as it was for those who grew up with the series, whether it means fairly dark or fairly lighthearted .

Teela often had the best character background and destiny out of the ensemble in MOTU so I'm glad she's front and centre for this one...wonder if 'wimpy' Adam will accompany her and they start to properly connect?

Skeletor was getting pretty edgy by the time the classic series ended (his scheme in "Problem With Power"), so if he's a bit more ruthless here, there's a basis in what we had from earlier.

Oh, wait, I found it. in the second paragraph in the shot of the text crawl from the Power Con picture.

So, it's being made by the guys who did Castelvania, and they said it's going to be "Metal." That sounds like it's going to be fairly serious in tone. But they also seem to want to share continuity with the original series, which had a very campy tone. I'm feeling a bit of disconnect here. Like, I feel that these two things don't mesh.
