I don't think that review did the show justice because I think he was expecting a real anime.

[up] Yeah I just watch the thing and I have to agree the reviewer is in the wrong mindset in reviewing the show. Like Nostalgia Critic reviewing Last Action Hero wrong. Or What Culture Wrestling reviewing Final Deletion wrong. They treat it as a serious legitimate story when in reality its clearly a parody on the genre.

Which, I have to say, did a pretty good job at it as I actually counted the many tropes the show made fun of. The use of Jaden Smith as the main character is actually perfect, as his mannerism actually made the main character pretty funny to watch and listen to. Speaking of voice acting, man the intentionally unsuitable voice work for each characters really make the series stand out from the animes they make fun of.

All in all, this show is worth a watch. Its shaping up to be the Archer of Animes . . . oh god, did I just used that X of Y joke again?

You did. And it's too bad many people aren't willing to see it for what it is and expect to see No game no life 2.0 or RWBY turbo edition. This makes it harder for anyone to suggest uploading it to the rest of the web.

Fucking weeaboos the lot of them.

This series is more comparable to Inferno Cop im terms of tone and parodic nature. Only difference is that while IC has cheap (incredibly cheap even by Trigger standaes) animation and over the top humor, while this show has a very high production (with an all star cast and well recognized production team) but chose to go the intentionally bad route to showcase its comedy. Both have the goal to being a parody to popular animes.

[nja] Wait. Just remembered another anime this is similar to: Ghost Stories.

[up][up] The animation is bog-standard "cheap anime". It just tends to stay on model a bit more than average for that sort of thing. It was done on the cheap by Production IG, which probably explains it.

If your parody looks exactly the same as the thing you're parodying, without actually drawing any attention to it at all, that part at least is not a very good parody.

I guess what I'm saying is that, everything else aside, the visuals really are bottom of the barrel generic with the only real difference from, say, the dirt-cheap Chinese coproductions that are being made now, being the larger than usual number of black characters. (And don't get me wrong, that part's a good thing.)

[up]Consider me on the opposite end on its animation looking exactly like the animes it is parodying without calling attention to it. Thr way it looks and feels really make the voice work which wouldn't fit in contemporary anime all the more funnier. As I mentioned with the comparison to Ghost Story (mostly its infamous English Dub), the charm I found in the series stems from the dialogues of the characters in the show and their rather quirky obsession with living the high standard life of the Neo Yokio life. I admit that the start of this show started out weird in the first episode, but by the second it really starts to pick up.

Especially the second where the running gag involves the main character accidently choosing to wear midnight blue to a black and white event. Not explain the joke there, it just had to be seen.

[up]x2 Okay. Why its cancer? I mean if I call a show cancer I usually point out its faults instead of just saying "I couldn't get through the first episode". Is it the weird pacing that put you off in the first episode. The out of place voicework? The themes of high society (which is actually the main thing it is making fun of). The animation style. Etc.

[up]Nothing really wrong with having different taste from people. I like this show, but can see why others would hate it. While at the same time hate the show Teen Titans (yes the original, not its Go spin off which I also don't like), but get why people would enjoy that show and wouldn't fault them for enjoying an inferior version of the comic book team.

[up] Ah.

Your free to like what ya want but if you enjoy good & bad shows in general then you have varied taste that allows you to enjoy a possible wide variety of shows.

I think one would have bad taste if they like thought the Transformer's movies were utter masterpieces of cinema or something like that.

[up]x2 and [up] To be fair, only the first Transformers movie is a masterpiece in cinema from its three dimensional characters, its complex themes on war and initial humanization of the transformers themself. Take for example the scene where Bumblebee piss robot fluids on Agent Simmons; that shows that just like us human, these alien robots take kindly to beurocratect assholes who thinks they are in charge and would rather defecate on said authority figures. That scene was just brilliant and shows that Michael Bay is a genius writer who is more than just popcorn flick blockbusters.

But we should talk more of that in the Transformer thread and why Transformers (2007) is the best movie ever made.

Half the characters in actual anime don't know how to blink.

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."

Actual anime characters having a habit of not blinking often?

Yup, I've noticed that for some time too. And to this day, I keep trying to forget that.

Okay, now I'm really split on whether to see this later or what. So far, only BigK and ewolf seem to like it, while everyone else? Not so much...

Not even Pan-Pizza (from RebelTaxi) seems to like it much..., and I kind of hold his opinion to a somewhat high degree since he got me into Buddy Thunderstruck.

[up] Oh yeah, Big Mouth is that animated Netflix show with kids coming of age and hormone monsters, right?

Yeah, I get how Netflix having a nonexistent form of Executive Meddling can be seen as a major plus for creators, but maybe for stuff like Big Mouth, they need to seriously ask themselves: "Sure, it's an original idea...but is anyone really asking for this?"

There should be a means for quality control. You should prove that your show should be greenlit then just be added in then bam.

Honestly I don't think the show is very good, but I'm surprised how many people seem to have totally missed what it's trying to go for, like in Mike Toole's review.

Like everything else that came out of Fox ADHD, it's basically a watered down attempt at early [adult swim] (ex. Space Ghost, Sealab, Harvey Birdman), keeping the weirdness and cheap animation without being quite as subversive or cynical and actual [adult swim].

Like on the trope page people.are talking about it being an indecisive parody and saying that it's Alternative Character Intrepretation to think the show is purposely going for Narm Charm when like. Dude, it's super obviously going for intentionally narminess. I don't think it's very good at doing that, mind it, but it's super obvious what the show is trying to be.

It's..... Ok. Its fine. A few of the jokes land like Steve Buscemi vaping and "the big Toblerone" but on the whole it just.... I dunno it's poser [adult swim], and why watch poser [adult swim] when actual adult swim does adult swim better

The people who say it's so bad it'd horrible remind me of the people who don't get 12 Oz Mouse and why it's actually goddamn genius (and before you ask, no I'm not being ironic at all)

I think part of the issue here is that the show, as released, barely has any context. Netflix released one not very good trailer. Some know that it was produced for a failed television block with a set of shows no one really cares about, plus Axe Cop, because people like that one, but a lot of people don't. And for those people, it looks like a particularly crappy anime with a weirdly famous cast. Hell, that applies even if you know the context but never actually watched anything from the block.

Even if you know the context, that actually sort of predisposes you against it. Because the show was almost finished when Fox killed the ADHD block which, accurately or not, creates an impression that Neo Yokio was part of the reason the block was killed. It was probably just unfortunate timing, but initial details and perception are important.

Granted, I'm not really a fan of most Adult Swim shows. I don't hate them, I just don't really get it a lot of the time, so watered-down adult swim really isn't for me.
