Anime parody miniseries due 22 September. The creative team (led by Ezra Koenig) are all Westerners, which is why I'm putting it in this forum... but they pulled in some major animation talent from across the pond — namely Production I.G and Studio DEEN — to give it that authentic touch.

Someone made the assessment that it kind of looks and feels like a Wes Anderson anime; given the general aesthetic and the cast list, I kind of have to agree. (Especially the cast list.)

This looks really like it could have been made by an anime company.

From what I understand this is a leftover project from Animation Domination (who bought you Axe Cop, and nothing else of note) that Netflix just happened to pick up.

-_-

Of course. The way to make your anime parody look like an authentic anime is to hire actual Japanese animators, not Americans.

[up]Um, yeah? They kinda fuckin' invented it.

Also, do we have any official word on this being a "parody" of anime or is it just baseless speculation by the OP?

[up][up]It was a Fox comedy block on Saturdays designed to compete with Adult Swim in the wake of the cancellation of Mad TV. It lasted a year and was notable for an adaptation of Axe Cop, and absolutely nothing else of note.

And yes. That is Steve Buscemi as that old guy in the middle of the trailer.

I admit when I heard about this, I thought it would be a lot more immature, biting, wild, and raunchy. Something you'd see on Adult Swim. The trailer was actually very relaxed, it doesn't go worse than PG it seems.

As an old fan of Will Smith and his kin, and a huge weeb at times, I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. Plus, I'd be lying if I didn't say the biggest selling point for me was the fact the main characters are black, and that's something I kinda wish more anime studios did more of for its own creations, but I don't question another county's culture and demographic all too much.

Well there's Le Sean Thomas' creations, which all star some kind of multi-racial cast and frequently follows the adventures of black characters.

On one hand, they have Jaden Smith on the project. On the other hand, they have Steve Busemi.

. . . Well its a parody, and I do like Animation Domination HD back in 2013, so I guess I'll give it a shot since it can be considered a spiritual succesor to School Girl Crush.
