This has been seeing some misuse. I could see putting it under JFF, but I'm of the thought that it's perfectly fine as trivia, if in dire need of a cleanup.
I specifically echo that sentiment earlier about the decline from modern relevance not meaning the page should be cut. That's like amputating your hand because you have arthritis. If anything, it just needs some more concrete redefinition, I would say to "people who are nerdy for their field." Hollywood actor who obsesses over Tolkien? Worth a mention. Fantasy author who obsesses over Tolkien? Not worth a mention. Fantasy author who obsesses over Tolkien but is also a Trekkie, avid gamer, and massive history buff? Worth a mention.
I think a cleanup is the best and most reasonable option, and the question should be more about whether we tweak the trope along the way.
Disclaimer: I've switched off my autocorrect. Brace fkr djsastrr. You're right, whether someone is "nerdy" should be defined by their field.
For example, James Cameron liking anime or Dan Aykroyd liking dinosaurs would fit (under the current definition, at least, which we may or may not be keeping). On the other hand, check out the first example in the "Artists" folder on the Other subpage:
- Pieter Bruegel the Elder was enormously influenced by Hieronymus Bosch. One of Bruegel's early paintings, "De Dulle Griet" ("Mad Meg") shows a Hellish scene right that is very Boschesque.
...Really?

Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project! The title looks ambiguous, so would renaming One Of Us be a good idea?
The crowner still needs to be hooked.
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project!Crowner hooked
I agree with making it Just for Fun so it can stay how it is.
Should the crowner be called?
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project!Looks safe to call in favor of JFF. The ratio is barely high enough.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportSo the page will be Just for Fun but the definition will stay the same?
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project! That's what I understand the crowner as.
That it's being made a Just for Fun page to talk about well-known people with nerdy interests.
One thing to note: There Is No Such Thing As Notability. Complete and utter unknowns can have pages here. I have seen on Creator/ pages "(Fanfiction author) is an avowed geek" or even worse, "(Fanfiction author) is a fan of of (show he writes fanfiction for)."
Technically these aren't wrong per se but they're... wrong.
To clarify, this is why I'm in support of making this JFF.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. Now that this is Just for Fun, those links cannot exist in the trope list (not that troping the creators was allowed anyway).
I'm less inclined to be strict about "above the line" potholes.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.
I'd almost want to say listing this trope for people explicitly known for nerdy thing like fanfiction is sort of defeating the point.
I've never cared for this page, and I don't know if we really need to keep track of it, but I think the "people who are nerdy for their field" idea is what this was supposed to be. That is legitimate trivia, even if we don't need it, and it's pretty easy to cut misuse from that, like "artist is a fan of another artist" or "fantasy author likes fantasy", which obviously aren't notable at all (at least not in a general context).
Hmm. Just to show how confusing this one can get, someone just added the following to Gabriel García Márquez:
- One Of Us: A huge Rolling Stones fan, quoted as saying that the Rolling Stones, the 1959 uprising in Cuba and his friends were the only things that could hold his interest for any length of time.
So...a fantasy writer (the biggest name in Magic Realism) is "one of us" because of his interest in the Rolling Stones? "We" are into the Stones but not fantasy? Or the Stones are nerdier than fantasy? I suspect a lot of us would say that's precisely backwards. (Though I'm a big fan of both.)
I would have taken this to the "Is This an Example?" thread if this weren't still in TRS...
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Yeah, that's really odd...
Rolling Stone is a huge, mainstream cultural icon and not something you'd call niche or "nerdy".

I'm on the side of keeping it, but trimming the following a bit:
1. "So and so is planning on starring in the film adaptation of [x]," especially if [x] was a film announced in 2011 that still has not come out. We can change it to would like to star in a film adaptation of [x], though.
2. "So and so took a role in [mainstream franchise], so they're a geek". These films often make a lot of money nowadays, so they didn't necessarily take the role for love of a franchise (unless they've explicitly said they are). I hope that doesn't sound like gatekeeping.
“Dude, sucking at something is the first step to being sorta good at something!” - Jake the DogThe second needs that BIG if for people that explicitly geek-out about the role.
Like Nicholas Cage actively pursuing lead roles in comic book movies to end up in Ghost Rider. He even has a Ghost Rider tattoo they had to CGI out in his shirtless scenes.

I do think the entries need cleanup. Perhaps a good link that verifies nerdiness/geekiness?
(Quoted from my post in page discussion) In nowadays world where pop culture is very pervasive, one man will have something of it as his favourite work. I don't know how "US Republican politician and Governor of Utah John Huntsman is a fan of Captain Beefheart. Winston Churchill's favorite movie was That Hamilton Woman. British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan was a Tintin fan." is being nerdy/geeky.
Imposing a link requirement is just asking for the page to turn into a wall of ZC Es where people get lazy and depend on the link to do the job for them.
We would also need to define what counts as nerdy/geeky or how big a fan someone would have to be to qualify for this trope, and that's getting dangerously close to gatekeeping. Not sure I'd want to open that can of worms.
Wouldn't the Nicholas Cage example be closer to Promoted Fanboy? He's already listed on that page.

I think there can be overlap with these tropes since Promoted Fanboys are also often One Of Us

What is the fate of this "trope"?
See the crowner.

Crown Description:
What would be the best way to fix the page?
I dont think we really need to change it much, being a fan especially before the joining a franchise or work is a big thing really. Its Trivia sure but yeah. IE Nana Mizuki was a huge Pretty Cure fan for years and was quite vocal in her excitement when she was cast as the lead in 7th Pretty Cure series Heartcatch Pretty Cure.
Being a fan of specifically TV Tropes itself is a different trope, especially if they actually talk about it or use it in something.
