Lindsay Ellis

I'm currently awaiting her next response and I'm hoping she doesn't dig herself deeper

For the record, I do think the people trolling Lindsay and calling her a bigot are completely wrong. I just think Lindsay's tweet just could have been worded better.

Two things can be true and this situation isn't really that complex in my opinion. The people criticizing Lindsay are being horrible and antagonistic, but Lindsay as a public figure needs better PR. It's no different from when celebrities say something stupid or barely offensive. And a lot of them do exactly what she did.

Her brand will be fine. Deleting social media was probably the right call. I honestly think this situation was blown completely out of proportion.

Even if this whole Raya comparison didn't bloat into the mess that it did I still would've ditched Twitter anyway because it's a horrible, soul-sucking hellsite that I don't have a strong enough stomach for.

I do think Lindsay didn't handle this too well and I get some of her past comments being, uh...concerning, but I don't think she's a bad person by any means.

The whole "raya look like ATLA" it happen because in many ways there have being a sort of follow the leader about it aftwrard, kinda how twilight let to a sudden explosion of paranormal teen romance in general.

@4615: There are three things that can be accomplished by saying that person A owes person B an apology: (1) getting person A to apologise or failing that at least knock it off, (2) showing person B that at least one other person thinks they have been treated unfairly, and (3) getting onlookers to think about the morality of the situation.

Of course, how much it serves each of these purposes depends a lot on context. For instance, (1) and (2) necessitate saying it in front of person A and B, respectively—otherwise, (3) is the only one of these things that can be accomplished. What's more, there are definitely diminishing returns to all of them when the statement is repeated (by the same person or different ones)—past a certain point, everybody that was going to think about the morality is already doing so, and person A isn't going to change their mind if they haven't already but is rather more likely to start viewing being repeatedly prompted to apologize as harassment.

In this particular instance, I'd say it's completely pointless to say in this thread that Lindsay Ellis should apologize— she's not likely to see it, she's not likely to be swayed by another comment to the same effect if she hasn't already been swayed by the previous ones, it's already abundantly clear to those who want an apology that others agree, and everyone here is already thinking about the morality of the situation or is actively choosing not to.

So we seem to agree about this specific case, but not necessarily about whether it is generalizable. It appears to me that you approached the situation mainly from a large-scale perspective (lots of people involved), and I approached it mainly from a small-scale perspective (few people involved), and that we may have been talking past each other a bit as a consequence.

Is also exactly, WHAT she should be apologizing, if about this incident then she already did in her post, if about all other stuff then that is another thing enterely because it feel more abstract, as this was a sort ofintervention and she should change her behavor right now.

Is also social media make thing more personal, and it always demand honesty or a leat demostration of honesty, so it make the next question on how sincere is apology and that make thing harder.

It's also pretty bizarre to go on endlessly about how "cancel culture" is a irrational, animalistic hate mob that will never be satisfied and then be seemingly annoyed that "cancel culture" simply let the subject go after a while. Would you rather they kept banging the drum? That'd be weird considering you've been loudly proclaiming for them to stop or they're basically war criminals.

There was a new episode on Musical Splaining about O Brother, Where Art Thou?, by the way. Great movie.

This is the best jukebox musical of all time, and this is coming from someone who dislikes those.

... that's just a really weird reaction considering Netflix is the biggest streaming service. Just... odd to me.
