[up] Beware, the English dub copped a lot of flack for some... creative translations in later episodes.

[up][up]I actually didn't see any problem with those lines. .... then again, I don't look for those things to begin with.

[up] Considering that Lucoa's line was blatantly Out of Character when half of her jokes are basically "doesn't get human social norms"...

The kindest way to interpret it is the translation team was trying to damn hard to seem "relevant".

Even as early as episode when the dub had Kobayashi blatantly say she's not into women when that clearly isn't the case. It also adds some creepy Unfortunate Implications considering it now makes Tohru's flirting attempts rather creepy if she's doing to someone supposedly straight.

What did Lucoa say in the English dub? I only watched the sub up to the anime convention episode. Don't remember if that's before or after episode eight.

As for Kobayashi saying she's not into women (that line I had heard about), I think it's supposed to be obvious that she's lying to herself. I mean, no one who's not into chicks has such strong opinions about French maid uniforms, right?

Okay you know what? I should've known this would open up this argument again so forget the whole thing.

[up] Too late evil grin[lol]

[up][up] This article discusses it but for the exact specifics

Tohru: “What’s with that outfit?”'
Lucoa: “Everyone was always saying something to me, so I tried toning down the exposure. How is it?”
Tohru: “You should try changing your body next.”

Was changed to

Tohru: “What are you wearing that for?”
Lucoa: “Oh those pesky patriarchal societal demands were getting on my nerves, so I changed clothes.”
Tohru: “Give it a week, they’ll be begging you to change back.”

And my long-held intense skepticism of anime dubs is once again validated.

That's nowhere near as bad as I imagined. I actually think Tohru's response is much more questionable than Lucoa's line.

I love the massive shitstorm it brewed when the joke was exactly the same. Good job using that righteous fury so well, internet.

Some people (read: men) really, really hate being reminded that misogyny/patriarchy is a thing that exists.

[up][up] Because it's not the same joke. One is Lucoa (once again) failing to realise how people react to her figure (note that in this scene her top is fairly covering, but quite tight, especially in the chest), the second is a lame attempt to seem edgy and topical over what is currently a bit of a hot button issue.

It really only bugs me because I don't think the Aztecs were matriarchal (though I don't have the background to say that one way or the other). Other than that, it's at least an attempt to give her a bit more characterization and control over what she wears. 'Doesn't understand that her gigantic breasts attract men' is a silly trope; 'ancient dragon who doesn't care but understands the need to fit in' is a little better, even if the end result ends up being the same in broad strokes.

YMMV on whether the former is indeed a silly trope and the latter is somehow better.

Aside from Koboyashi's line in episode 1, I didn't take issue with Funi's looser scripting here.

I didn't really mind the dub change in the first episode. It wasn't nearly important enough for me to even register in my mind. And honestly, that patriarch line? There was a shitstorm over THAT? Then again, I've seen bigger shitstorm for smaller things, so can't say I'm surprised.

Watched up to Ep 10. So far, one of my favorite Kanna related moment is Kanna running in door, you all know the one. My God, the cuteness. I'm not into cute things recently, but goddamn that got me.

Also, I love this 8 bit remix of the opening:

In all seriousness, it's a banned topic. Let's focus on the remix.

Certainly not as crunchy as I expected from the concept. I like it!

[up] Including the issue where the dub for Prison School changed one of the lines to reference it. Same person on Funi's translation team as I recall.

Random question that just popped in my mind.

So...what happened to the sword that stabbed Tohru in ep 1?
