A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

Its kinda why I hate that "white and black" are terms people use to refer to ethnicity :P There are europeans with dark skin and non europeans with light skin, the term itself doesn't really say anything
Yeah, I'm surprised at the amount of people of my zone that has pale skin but non white traits
Watch me destroying my country(x3) The first Raven besides the Teen Titans character that comes to mind is Raven from That's So Raven, who is also named after her actress.
Now that I think about it, are there even any black goth characters outside of webcomics and indie comics?
Black not, but at least Nico from runway is asian goth, so that is count for something, isnt?
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"I would say that the contrast of light skin and dark clothing/hair is something that kind of sells a traditional 'goth' look. One is that it shows they don't get a lot of sunlight (a stereotype of goths), and the other is skin-clothing contrast. There's something vaguely eye-appealing about someone with pale skin wearing contrasting dark black clothing (and on the flipside, a person with very dark skin by default looks pretty nice in extremely bright white clothing)
"Any campaign world where an orc samurai can leap off a landcruiser to fight a herd of Bulbasaurs will always have my vote of confidence"[Bianca] Xunise is especially fond of True, who starred as Rochelle in the 1996 cult film The Craft about a teenage coven of witches. Rochelle is the movie’s only black character and uses her newfound powers to get back at a racist classmate who bullies her. While many black girls who’ve attended predominantly white schools can relate to Rochelle’s storyline, they also appreciate her aesthetic, True told Racked about the groundbreaking character she played.
“They love everything about the look — from the baby barrette to the chokers to the [Catholic schoolgirl] skirts,” the actress says. When she’s not in uniform, Rochelle is styled darkly, with flowing black dresses and matching tights, chocolate lipstick, crucifix earrings, and layers of beaded jewelry.
From Meet the Black Girls of Goth. I also recommend Bianca Xunise's comics.
Scarlett Johansson is coming under fire for her comments on PC casting. That she should be allowed to play anyone[1]
I vote that Scar Jo be only allowed to play trees from now on.
She’s an actress. It’s her job, yes.
It’s also the job of the director and the people who handle casting to pick the right person for the job. And sometimes she isn’t it.
Pretty much this.
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.@ComicFan: You got a better link? Not going to the Daily Mail for this.
EDIT: Never mind, found one.
This quote is especially precious:
"We should just let everyone have their own feelings, so stop being mad at me for playing Asians and transmen already!"
ScarJo is such a pill.

By the logic, I'm supposed to be okay with any blackface portrayals.
If more people are okay with it, I'm supposed to let them be without letting know why they shouldn't be.

A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh. Here's a link from Vulture: https://www.vulture.com/2019/07/scarlett-johansson-says-she-has-the-right-to-play-any-person.html
“You know, as an actor I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job,” Johansson explained. “I feel like it’s a trend in my business and it needs to happen for various social reasons, yet there are times it does get uncomfortable when it affects the art because I feel art should be free of restrictions.” She added about political correctness specifically: “I think society would be more connected if we just allowed others to have their own feelings and not expect everyone to feel the way we do.”
This is only one in a long line of comments from her in a similar vein.
Personally, I think it comes across as a bit self-absorbed. Johansson is one of THE most high-profile, most sought-after actresses in Hollywood. She has no shortage of offers for roles. She can afford to not be involved with projects where she won't be the best pick anyways. It comes off as her being frustrated that she can't do whatever she wants.

She is right....well kind of, it would be ideal of any person to play at any role in theory, but seen how stuff can be sum as "if a white person can moderly pass, let it, if black or anything else, fuck it" it come across as bordrline naive and stupid.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"I personally blame the people who go “well we could hire a lesser known actor for a role that calls for a minority actress, or we could hire Scar Jo!” And they hire her. Again and again. And as we’ve seen, that is to the detriment of said film.
In other words, like every far-right/far-right adjacent talking head on youtube and/or Fox News who whines about not being able to call gay people f***ots without backlash anymore or think they should be allowed to say "nigga" just because black people say it.
SJ's comment's call to mind those of these very same free speech-fellating fuckwits, and her fame and star power has made her just as much of a spoiled, self-entitled tool as they are.
I'm suddenly less enthusiastic about the Black Widow film.
I guess Scarjo would be upset to know I didn't approve of her casting in Her.
I would have preferred a professional voice actress.
With all the memes about women choosing a bear over a man, Hollywood might wanna get on an 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' adaptationThe Black Widow movie is going to be in this weird space once it comes out.
On one hand, people have been asking for this film for years, the MCU desperately needs to expand beyond white male protagonists, and after the outcry of what happened in Endgame, people want Natasha to get her time to shine.
On the other hand, Johansson has made some rather tone-deaf comments regarding diversity in film in the past few years and that's definitely going to be brought up again once we she starts promoting the thing. Plus, people who think that this film will be too little, too late; what with Nat still being dead after its all said and done.
So, be prepared for that discussion once the Phase 4 line-up is announced. And what a joy... that will... *sigh*... I'm tired.

I'm starting to feel like the only reason I want a Black Widow movie is so that it can make all the money (come on, it's an MCU movie, of course it will make money) and then Johansson can retire and stop taking roles that are inappropriate for her.
Probably won't change a thing, given she's already one of the most highly paid actresses as is.
I'm sure she already has all the money she could possibly ever want. I don't think it would change anything.
I was never really all that impressed with Scarlett Johansson as an actress. Comments like this from her have caused me to dislike her as a human being.
So yeah, I'm gonna pass on the Black Widow movie.

Disgusted, but not surprisedLashana Lynch will be the new 007 in Bond 25 that replaces James[1]
The New York Post is saying the scoop comes from the notoriously unreliable Daily Mail, but God, I hope they're right just this one time.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."
I don't mean the name, I mean that Raven has being so associate to Pale skin that is kinda hard to imagine her with other skin tone.
Thought I feel the need to say that many native-descendents can have pale skin without having the other European traits
