A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.

This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

I mean... cool but... color me uninterested.
... much like Jackie Chan. Or audiences for the TV series (that I didn't even know existed until it was cancelled). I don't see this being a success.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.I feel like that TV show was made by people who saw a Lethal Weapon show was being made but didn’t see the massive difference between the two.
Michelle Rodriguez Says Liam Neeson Kissing Viola Davis in ‘Widows’ Proves He’s Not Racist
Oh Michelle, why? Just... why?
Oh...just....oh.
Damn Neeson, why did you even bring that up ?
Also don't know what that fantasy book is about but the name is cool enough to get me interested.
...I take it Michelle didn’t even watch Widows because that you can still be racist while being attracted to women of color is literally a plot point.
Speaking as a Latinx, can our Latina icons stop disappointing us? There’s like only four and the rate of burning through goodwill is seriously alarming.

I mean, that is why you shouldn't look up to icons, they aren't role models, they are human beings with all the flaws that people complain in internet about That includes making really dumb arguments
Sorry could you elaborate? I haven't watched the movie but don't mind spoilers.
Spoilers for Widows in the folder.
That Black Leopard, Red Wolf show sounds interesting but I wish they would stop trying to sell shows to the public by comparing them to Game of Thrones. It's become the Dark Souls of overused media comparisons and besides, it no longer holds the prestige it used to given the drop in writing quality as the show went on.
I agree. Go T was never that good in the first place, and it’s annoying to have every medieval or fantasy work trying to use it as a template (or a marketing ploy). It’s a disservice to whatever show is being promoted.
Saying a work is Game of Thrones -esque makes me immediately go “... convoluted, grim dark, with lots of exploitative scenes of sexual assault and villains who win?”
Additionally I'd argue GOT is not a sustainable story. At some point it has to end, and has to find some way to get everyone in a position called an ending, and that's... really hard to do when you have a story based on so much subverting and darkness.
It makes me wonder if, when the show ends, there will be a collapse of the GOT clones (purposeful or merely forcibly invoked). Or I could be entirely wrong!
Read my stories!I've seen fans of The Walking Dead say similar things about that show. I don't think the problem is that it's difficult to close up, it's just not something that can go on for that long.
I had already stopped reading the books when the show was released, so I never actually watched Go T, but based on the books I always felt that the value of randomly killing characters off is overstated. For one, it was never THAT random, there were always some which I am sure are still around (Mainly John Snow, Danery's, Sansa, ?Aya? and whoever the brother who lost the use of his legs was called), and two, it is extremely frustrating if you spend pages over pages about a character just to have him killed off, making all the time you spend learning about him pretty pointless.
Though the main reason I dropped it was the fact that I felt that the books were romanticising rape.
Attack on Titan is another series that has a similar issue. For all that both of these shows built their reputation on how Anyone Can Die it's closer to that the cast has a large number of Mauve Shirts. The real main characters tend to get away with an absurd amount compared to others, to the point that it's become a major source of frustration for many readers especially when it comes to Jon and Dany's chapters. The Kill Em All reputation is exaggerated and illustrates the problems with using character death for shock value; once the novelty wears off it becomes a Godzilla and astute readers will realize its overuse makes it more of a liability to the storytelling.

@Tucker
If being Latino don't make you hate your culture at least once, you're doing it wrong.
Seriously. Is kinda hard to not self loathe either for a "Right" or "Left" pov.

Watch me destroying my countryPfft. Try being Asian. There's a lot of stuff we can use to justify bouts of self-loathing.
Disgusted, but not surprisedDon't feel bad guys. For as much as we Black people unite in stuff, there are sectors of our culture that can't stand each other.

A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.Oh plenty of Asians in East Asia are poor as shit too.
Disgusted, but not surprisedPft, try growing up in a third-world Southeast Asian country. I don't even know where to begin with the self-loathing.
Hitokiri in the streets, daishouri in the sheets. Our unnoficial brothers if our memes say anything about us.
...Really, some people find the simmilitude between Peruvian cholos and south-east asian a bit uncanny.
The Global South is really a...interesting place.

Watch me destroying my countryI imagine it comes with the territory of being a Spanish colony for three centuries during the same time period (1532-1824 for Peru, 1521-1898 for the Philippines).
Hitokiri in the streets, daishouri in the sheets. There is a lot of overlap between the shared history of European colonialism as well as a penchant for social conservatism.
