A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.

This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

Appreciate the citations, thanks.
Didn't know the series was criticized like that. Most of the criticisms I hear are from MRA-esque guys who complain about women not knowing their place or some such drivel.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.If someone is selling branded lingerie based on a show about the exploitation of women, that is a legitimate thing to complain about.
I am really wondering what possess a company to do that with this property. Is Hulu so desperate for cross branding? Makes you wonder what’s next. Official Handmaid bonnets? Aunt Cattle Prods?
the only explanation I have is that no one thought to inform marketing what it was they were trying promote, they probably just saw the bonnet and ran with it
New theme music also a boxSomeone realized how stupid the wine idea was and cancelled the line. Let’s hope we don’t see any Handmaid’s Tale limited edition Coors Light cans in the near future,
Have any cast or crew reacted to it thus far?
I hope whatever marketing asshat greenlit this was fired and blacklisted from the industry.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThe Black Widow movie has its director [1]
I'm not really sold on this Black Widow movie, I don't mind Scarlett Johanson but I feel like there are more interesting characters that deserve their own movie way before Black Widow gets one. They should just made it into a tv mini-series.
Tis the great art of life to manage well The restless mindHow many of those characters are female and not currently owned by Fox (outside of Miss Marvel naturally, but it makes no sense to introduce her before Captain Marvel).
They go out of their way to make this a female project so hopefully there won't be any more discussions about Natasha's abilities to bear children.
Once upon a time i would have been looking forward to this BW movie but not anymore. Johansson herself is a shitty person and while getting female led films is more than fair i kinda wish we had a Wo C led film already.
It's specifically "Ms. Marvel" not "Miss Marvel". While there are circumstances where the "Ms." and "Miss" honorifics are are interchangeable, that is not always the case.
Plus it's a superhero alias, so it's only ever written a single way. So while it might technically be acceptable to refer to Kamala Khan as "Miss. Khan" or "Ms. Khan" since she is an umarried woman (Miss. refers to an umarried woman, Ms. to any woman), her superhero alias is always "Ms. Marvel" because that's just what her superhero alias is.
Apparently there are rumblings of a Ms. Marvel movie in the pipeline. My guess is that Marvel is waiting until they see how well Captain Marvel does before fully committing to it. Even though Kamala Khan is a very different kind of hero, it'll still be a lot easier to get audiences on board with her if Captain Marvel does well.
Even another white female led superhero movie would be more tolerable if it wasn't headed by someone as egotistical as Scarlett Johansson. She's not even that great of an actress. The reason she's so beloved as Black Widow largely has to do with the Russos playing to her limited strengths, I feel.
I was not on board with Johansson ever since day one when the first choice to play Widow was the far superior Emily Blunt, who couldn't do it due a scheduling problem.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."But is not like we have many of them. Not that I disagree that having more films with Non-white woman would be good, but is not like we have a excess of white woman on the filmic superhero genre.

Watch me destroying my country“don't mind Scarlett ”
Given som of her recent choices, I do.
So apparently there are plans on making a movie out of the rescue of the Thai school soccer team that was trapped in a cave

Considering the sausage fest the MCU still is, I take every female lead I can get. Plus, this is not just about what is in front of the camera, it is also about what is behind it. This is the chance for a female director to shine and for a female writing team to get some credit. Enough that they will later be hired for projects, period, not just for the female related stuff.
Given that this just happened and these children are likely facing lifelong mental and physical health issues...this seems extremely exploitative and in poor taste. The only way I'd be okay with this is if every child's family signed off on it and the money made went to the children and their families. Otherwise, gross.
"In 900 years of time and space I've never met anyone who wasn't important."Yeah, I found it troubling when there was talk of a movie happening before all the kids were saved.
The question now is... who will ScarJo be playing
Scar Jo is neither a particularly good actress or a particularly good human being. I don't have high hopes for this upcoming BW movie since she's the lead.

Disgusted, but not surprisedAlso it really feels like the moment has passed.
There have been roles she was great in.
Black Widow is my second favourite Avenger, so she has to do something right.
The Mary Sue get offended at the drop of a hat, because the hat is offensive.
That being said, lingere?! Wine? That makes sense in GOT with the medieval aesthetic and everyone having sex every five minutes when they aren’t killing people. But I can’t help but think of this SNL skit that makes fun of Handmaid’s Tale’s Misaimed Fandom.
