Even I found Spider-Man hard to get into at first. Like my first exposure was the newspaper comicstrip and there Spider-Man is this married guy who works for his crappy boss Jameson and puts on a costume to make ends meet. That was my Spider-Man when I saw the Sam Raimi movies which I saw as a prequel to the newspaper status-quo, at least the first one, and the idea that Spider-Man is this teenage hero was something that surprised me when I read comics and the cartoons, and it still does because as a kid I always saw him as an adult hero, and also unique, unlike Supes and Bats, for being married to a woman who knew and accepted his double life because I found the Clark/Lois stuff and the Batman romantic melodrama boring.

I think the unfamiliarity can be a strength, and give you a fresh perspective on the character. So just go by what you relate to...because the truth there isn't any single Spider-Man anymore.

Unless you're really busy or lazy, I have no idea why you would have any trouble getting into Spider-Man. Just start with Lee or USM, the only good Ultimate Marvel series, and work your way ahead from there.

[down] I edited this before I saw this. I'm still a prick. What it is.

You know, I'm no expert, but calling people lazy for not being into something doesn't strike me as a good way of convincing them to keep trying.

[up]Happens to the best of us. You fixed it, so that's good.

To be honest, I think if you see the first Sam Raimi film, Spider-Man I think that's enough. That basically contains the essence of Spider-Man's ethos. The movie's not very long. Seeing that one movie is enough to get into any other Spider-Man media and especially so for Spider-Verse. I remember people in my family who knew nothing about Spider-Man loving that film and getting involved in it.

It'd probably be more thematically appropriate to watch at least the first two films, since the two most prominent Peters in Spider-Verse seem to have lived most of those films.

I remember hearing the idea of this and that it was going to be animated, and didn't think it would ever be successful just because of the Animation Age Ghetto.

It already has perfect reviews, 2 more installments coming, and awards.

I am proven wrong.

At this stage, it could win the noble peace prize and I still wouldn't want to see it. I'm not supporting a movie where Peter and MJ gave up on each other. Just not. Not unless they reconcile at the end or something. I'll wait until I'm completely spoiled on it before I consider giving it my money.

Dude that happening is like a fucking given. Like everyone and their mum expects it.

I’d be legit surprised if it never happened because it’s so tremendously obvious that they will get back together.

Fact is there are multiple Peters and multiple M Js and no attempt is made to make anyone the "Prime" one. The sad-sack old Peter we meet is a flawed Luke-Last Jedi kind of guy. The one from Miles' universe who is happily together with MJ is the paragon.

And this Miles' story not the Peter-MJ love story okay...

I wouldn't really compare him to Last Jedi Luke.

He's just a bit down on his luck but that's always been Peter, good old Parker luck after all. He ain't no hermit doing jack-shit in the middle of nowhere.

He appears to be no more worse off than he usually is, guy's always having girl troubles.

What I mean is this is Miles' story. He loses his perfect mentor, and then he gets a new one but Miles is ultimately supposed to surpass the mentor, that's part of the Mentor's job description. So it has be a somewhat flawed character. As Old Peter says, "Don't do it like me, do it like you". He's an Anti-Role Model and that applies to Luke's characterization in The Last Jedi. It's Rey's story for her to be a hero she has to surpass Luke someway...so Luke needs flaws. I'm not a big fan of how they executed that TBH but the logic makes sense. It's why Dumbledore was shown as being so flawed in the final HP book.

.... WOW that is a petty reason to refuse to see a movie.

... hold up. Miles is happily together with MJ??

RE: Peter Parker the Spider-Hobo: I'm weirded out about how he doesn't have shoes. I mean, what's that all about?

Miles Morales is awesome and deserves to have his movie be about him and I think this story fits his arc and so on. Of course ideally they should make the movie entirely about him. And I hope Sony Pictures now that MCU has Tom Holland Peter on lock, go ahead with a live-action Miles movie.

As for Peter Rorschach the Hobo Hero, I think the no-shoes is about him being able to stick to surfaces anymore, and shows how he's gone wild and full-Spider. Peter becoming a hobo and so on is definitely a potential future in Spider-Man, one that writers and others have rarely explored. I often think of Peter Park being like Flitcraft, he's a story-within-story in Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon (novel only, Adapted Out of the movie). Flitcraft is a travelling salesman with a wife and so on. Then one day he has an accident and near death experience which panicks him...he then leaves town, fakes his death, abandons his wife goes to a new place...and then promptly marries again and starts a new life quite like the old one.

[up][up] To kyun,

I said "the one from Miles' universe"...i.e. the Peter Parker of the Prologue who promos and trailers confirm kicked the bucket (so not technically a spoiler). There are multiple Peter Parkers in this story...

Tobey Maguire was considered for the voice of the older Peter[1]

I am glad it didn't work out even if I would love to see Tobey Maguire back as Spidey again some day (or if you want to be creative, cast him as J. Jonah Jameson in the MCU as a more modern Younger and Hipper boss). I kind of feel they should leave the Raimi movies and that verse untouched for good. For me, Spider-Man 1 has the same space that the first Reeve Superman movie did and I don't want my impressions and headcannon disturbed by that. Sure Part 3 sucks and so on...but then it was doomed from the start because Part 1 and Part 2 told a totally complete story.

[up]It’s still way to easy to view Hobo Parker as the Tobey Maguire Spidey, so until something specifically contradicts that, I’m sticking to that headcanon.

That's fine and you can see it that way but I don't want it to be outright the case. Just like it should never be outright told to us in the movies that Deckard is a Replicant. It's one of those things that works best when left unsaid.

Jake Johnson's Peter doesn't have Tobey Maguire Peter's seriousness. He cracks jokes and is cynical where Maguire Pete's famously passive, an Extreme Doormat, pretty meek (and not really like comics!Peter) and so on.
