They also could make a movie which doesn't involve any white guys.
This.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. The problem with Pocohontas is that trying to remake it but be more faithful and respectful to history is just... next to impossible any way I try to figure it out.
Very VERY few of the animated movie elements are compatable with the actualy history or much resembling a respectful take on the groups represented. Get rid of history too much, you're repeating past offenses. Get rid of the movie too much, and you're not really remaking it. Try to balance it and you have an incohearent mess.
I think its just a bad idea to touch it. Even giving it to the hands of a culturally relevant director and crew, it would probably turn out a mess. If not get a Post-It Notes From Corperate treament. And should the film fail, I worry that corperate would get the wrong message again, rather than the team was set up to fail.
Well you can’t repeat the inane “both sides had a point” again.
That is really is the issue, what white people did to Native Americans is pretty much the ultimate example of real life “The Bad Guy Wins” & that’s way to fucking real & brutal.
Though a movie based on a Native American myth would be fun.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."And is also culturally Native North American, in the sense that it would be comparable in setting and cultural iconography to Pocahontas.
Also, Moana is still an original story that kinda/sorta uses Polynesian culture (a la Frozen or, an even better comparison, Brave) rather than an adaptation.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Native American Moana would be a Hell of a thing.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."I would love to see what a film could do with a character like Coyote.
Pretty much, as I pointed out in my Double Take Pocahontas vs Moana article, Moana's biggest strength is that it is practically about rediscovering your own culture. But hopefully Moana will be joined by other movies about tribal myths.

From what I can tell, the most recognition that Disney has given the Black Cauldron, is the (possibly bootlegged) "Black Cauldron" VHS tape, forgotten under the seat of Mickey's car, in the most recent short.

Black Cauldron is actually huge in Asia. Their castle is actually the one from Black Cauldron, complete with hornet king in the cellar.
I wouldn't want a Black Cauldron remake because it'd likely eclipse the original. A PG/PG-13 live-action film is more acceptable than an animated one.
A Pocahontas adaptation sounds awful. That film has always stuck out like a sore thumb and I'm sure not that many people want to see more of it. I've never understood why the Pocahontas myth is so popular when it's so riddled with plot-holes.
If they were going to remake Black Cauldron, I'd say they should double down and go all in on doing a film for all five books in the series, since Black Cauldron was actually the second book of five.
x3 That attraction with the Horned King (which was in Tokyo Disney) actually isn't there anymore. Also, it was under Cinderella Castle.
Really? I stand corrected then. I always thought that they had a different castle.
But it was a thing!
There's already a live action Pocahontas movies. It's called Avatar.
But in seriousness I'd avoid that movie altogether. A big reason being that it's actually based on an almost certainly false story made up by the real life John Smith.
If they want to make a movie about a Native American woman, I'd probably advise having it be about Sacagawea as my first choice. The Lewis and Clark expedition is itself pretty interesting and she played a critical role in its success.
Though to be fair this is more what'd interest me personally. It'd probably be even wiser to take some Native American legend and give it the Disney treatment with the help of some Native Americans. A major part of Pocahontas's failings is that it's based on real history-in fact, it's based on a narcissist's lie surrounding sensitive history.
However, what Disney is good at is adapting fairy tales, legends, that sort of thing. So just taking a Native American legend and adapting it, you're pretty much golden.
"Any campaign world where an orc samurai can leap off a landcruiser to fight a herd of Bulbasaurs will always have my vote of confidence"I think there was also another live-action film focused on Pocahontas released some years back called "The New World" (or something like that), and had Christian Bale in it.
I've never seen it though, so I couldn't tell you what the quality is.
With all the memes about women choosing a bear over a man, Hollywood might wanna get on an 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' adaptationIt was with Colin Farrell and Q'orianka Kilcher (who is of Quechua descent, not Powhatan). It’s not any better than the animated film, also portraying the abduction of Matoaka as a romantic love affair between her and Smith.
hey Disney, how about remake Great Mouse Dectective or a sequels, i quite like this version of Sherlock Holmes.
E.T technically is a Isekai movieIf they do go back to The Great Mouse Detective, it's going to be a hard task to find some one to fill in for Vincent Price as Ratigan. A new villain will only pale in comparison, and I'm not sure who could bring the same presence to the character like Price.
I can't see a live-action/Cgi Great Mouse Detective movie working.
An animated sequel to the first, I'm down with.

John Smith wasn't there when Pocahontas was abducted.
Another thing the movie got wrong.
So, yeah it would be better if Disney did more Native American folklore than history. There is so much to choose from. I would suggest the "Rough Faced" girl, but that would be too much like Cinderella.
If by “work” you mean “be very depressing and not at all for kids”...
Count me also in favor of doing some other Powhatan story that isn’t the rape of Matoakanote . Adapt stories about the formation of the Powhatan Confederacy, or their efforts to rescue African and Native slaves.
