The Islamophobia Thread

Is the etymology of "Islamophobia" particularly important for some reason?

It's not, even if he did coin the term it has no bearing on it validity. A single bad person coining a term doesn't mean it's illegitimate. Words can grow beyond their founders, what matters is the broader history and context they exist within.

Summary:

1. Palestian-American child Wadea Al-Fayoume and his mother were stabbed by their landlord Joseph M. Czuba. Wadea's dead but his mother survived and is hospitalized.

2. Detectives claim Czuba attacked the mother and child because they were Muslim and due to the news about the current Hamas vs. Israel conflict.

Jesus, that is seriously fucked up. What a horrible human being.

The perp's actions should be viewed as an affront to any of G-d's servants.

That's horrible and disgusting.

Hearing of pro-Islamist extremist groups online calling for anyone to get rid of the guy and claimed that he has Jewish heritage.

I have yet to see anything regarding the suspect's heritage.

Especially since Czuba is a Polish name, not a designated Jewish one.

The guy used to be a USAF veteran and prior to his stabbing, he has no problem with them. It's only until he heard of the Hamas attack via conservative news program on the radio and his paranoia on Hamas' call for a day of rage (and he found that the boy and his mom were Muslim) that he did his thing.

Some witnesses told the police that Czuba did make a treehouse for the boy.

The famous voice actress Tara Strong has shown her ass by being Islamophobic. She was later fired from the indie cartoon, Boxtown, for her behavior, and then blamed it on antisemitism.

Wow.

I saw a screenshot of a subtextually Islamophobic tweet from her (the second one you posted).

But when I looked on her feed it seemed like normal pro-Israel stuff and the kind of criticism of people celebrating the massacre that I had posted in the Israel thread (which maybe speaks badly of me).

That and some suspiciously specific stuff about having Muslim friends.

I didn’t think to look at her likes and didn’t expect her to be liking shit about Islam being terrorism. Yeah. She should be cancelled.

She seems to have backpaddled, in her recent Tweets she is speaking in favour of humanitarian aid towards Palestine.

Since she is a Jew, I am willing to cut her some slack for saying something stupid in the heat of the moment.

Social media is allowing way too many people to vent their rage publicly at the wrong targets.

Thank god twitter was invented years after 9/11.

I'm not willing to cut her slack. Strong has had a very big reactionary streak for a while and her blaming her firing on being Jewish is ridiculous. One of the people who worked on Boxtown, Spencer Rothbell, is Jewish and mocked Strong's response for the ridiculous lie it was.

I also find the "Since she's a Jew" comment to be bizarre and mildly antisemitic. That gives her no excuse to be Islamophobic and go off about Hamas supposedly planning to take over the world.

I apologize if I worded it in a misunderstanding way, I didn't mean to say "She is a Jew, she can't help it.", I was referring to the fact that she has relatives living in the area and might not have thought straight at the time of her posting this.

As for her reactionary attitude, the only thing I know about her personal politics is that she has always voted Democrat and got accosted by a conservative Taxi Driver in 2018 or so over it, alongside a fellow Voice Actress.

What are you referring to?

Strong is anti-vax and her followers have harassed people for criticizing her stances, never mind the same thing happening when she tried shilling for NFT's.

Do you do the same for Muslims and Palestinians who says similarly stupid things in the heat of the moment? If not, then stop with this double standard. It's NEVER okay for anyone to say horrible shit like what she said.

Yeah, it should be noted that a willingness to understand moments of rage from every group except Muslims is pretty textbook Islamophobia.

Ugh. Sucks that someone whose one of their most famous roles involves friendship and understanding has turned out to be such a terrible person..

If only it wasn't an act to begin with!

It's not unreasonable for a person to assume that an actor doing well in a given character role is because they have sufficient affinity with how the character is supposed to think (i.e. they think and believe like the character does in at least broad strokes), or at least intellectually understands that to a sufficient degree; the latter specifically means that we usually don't have to worry about actors who are good at playing morally horrible villains.

Unfortunately, it seems that Strong's case is of the latter sort rather than the former; she understands how a character who epitomizes friendship and tolerance is supposed to think, but is too shitty of a person to embody the same herself.

I'm having trouble following the conversation because I don't know who Strong is. Can someone fill me in?

Tara Strong, a Jewish actress that has been making insensitive comments on Islam. One of her more well-known parts is the voice for Twilight Sparkle in My Little Pony; Friendship is Magic.

Some people would consider that ironic, considering how big the show is on love and tolerance.
