You know, I would as well. It seems like the anime writers hate Joey / Jounichi though, and they love Kaiba so much that they'd never allow the former to defeat the latter. It would be great though. The absolute bitch fit Kaiba would have would be beautiful beyond reproach.
I only wish they'd consider it.
One Strip! One Strip!Agreed. The filler duel would have been a lot better if Jonouchi had won. As it is, it only serves the purpose of lessening Kaiba’s loss against Yugi.
Even Joey's fluke "loss" to Marik was a mistake if you ask me.
That just sounds like fanboying. The point was already made that Dark Marik needed his Dark Games to weaken his opponents and would have lost in a normal duel.
Not trying to fanboy, I just think someone losing a game due to fainting midway through making the winning move is silly.
I guess the implication that Joey beat Yugi at the end of Battle City (since he has his Red Eyes back) could be considered a consolation prize.
The issue I think is that once these cheating methods are revealed/negated, the opponents turn out to be laughably easy to beat. We see what happens when Joey goes up against far more skilled opponents like Kaiba and Seigfried and the result is almost a complete stomp.
It's not that clear-cut though, because how much each person's cheating affected the outcome of their duel comes down to context. Let's break it down:
Against Mai: Her "Aroma Tactics" was just pretending to know what her own cards were without looking. Nothing in her deck was built to take advantage of this, so it only amounts to an intimidation tactic. No actual cheating was going on, so Mai is legitimately skilled here.
Against Ghost Kozuka/Bonz: While Kozuka did cheat by having Keith Howard backseat duel for damn near the entirety of the match, that really just means it was Keith who lost to Joey legitimately. So yes, Kozuka sucked but Joey's actual opponent didn't.
Against Keith Howard: Keith's a weird case, in that while he's legitimately good at the game we only see him lose to a cheater (Pegasus) or cheat himself (Kozuka and his own duel against Joey). So while in his duel with Joey he performs well legitimately, we can't know for certain what his legal draws would have been if they weren't 7 Completed cards.
Against Esper Roba: Roba cheated by looking into Joey's hand, yes, but this was discovered before the information could become a significant game-changer. Not only is the rest of the duel played straight, with Roba proving to be a challenge, it's made clear from context that Roba would have made the same plays against Joey even without foreknowledge of his first hand.
Against Insector Haga/Weevil Underwood: Another character who's strangely good enough to play legitimately, but whom we only see cheat to win onscreen, turning his skill into an Informed Attribute. The entire duel rested on Haga planting Parasite Paracide in Joey's deck, because without that his entire strategy wouldn't have worked. So I'll give you this one being a case of the character not being a good duelist on his own merits.
That's pretty much it for his canon duels that involved rigged games. I'm not counting Filler duels because they skew the pacing and point of Joey's character development and frequently prop up Kaiba, so they shouldn't be used to dismiss Joey's skill. And to be fair, I also did it so Joey's skill couldn't be propped up with Filler wins.
Joey vs Valon duel is still awesome....
"We are just like Irregular Data. And that applies to you too, Ri CO. And as for you, Player... your job is to correct Irregular Data."It's in one of my top ten duels.
So it's been pointed out that the franchise has been moving away from the fantasy and magical roots of the original manga towards a more sci fi motif and theme. Do you guys think (or hope) that the next series will continue this trend or return to something more in line with the series roots?
I think that they will likely go into a more Science Fantasy feel in line with 5D's (and technically the first 2 series anime-wise). Of course that depends on if there are any more applicable sci-fi premises they can use after Cyberpunk Dystopia (5Ds), Aliens (ZEXAL, to an extent), Dimensional Travel (Arc-V) and Cyberspace (VRAINS).

I'd say Bio Punk, but that might be a bit too much.
Wake me up at your own risk.I just wonder what the next gimmick is going to be after motorcycles, physical holograms, and virtual reality. Maybe actual physical robotic or organic Duel Monsters (not Solid Vision holograms or spirits).

They still haven't gone into actual space yet (aside from like that episode towards the end of ZEXAL where Kaito dueled someone on the surface of the moon) with space stations and ships and stuff. Give me a duel on the Martian surface with someone using a Martian tripod-themed archetype.
The Astrals and Barians were Space Demons/Angels.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Joey's accent was meant to be a case of Accent Adaptation, as were the Bakuras.
The Singapore dub had Duke and Yugi talk like surfer dudes, Yami Marik and Marik were voiced as girls, and Yugi's grandpa and Ryou Bakura both got a Southern US accent that made them the funniest characters in the show. (And Yami Bakura kinda sounded like Shadow the Hedgehog.)
I wonder what Singapore!Kaiba, Pegasus, and Mokuba sounded like.

The Protomen enhanced my life.Just re-watched the King of Copycats on Youtube. Dimitri's voice actor does a good Dan Green impression. Bonus points for having him refer to spell cards as "magic cards".
That was a super fun episode!
The Protomen enhanced my life.Des Shinta's retrospective of the Doma Arc
- He thinks the arc's popularity in the west was hurt by how poorly the dub handled character motivations and personalities.
- He likes the arc for addressing Atem's fatal flaw of pride.
- He finds Valon the most shallow of Dartz's minions.
- But he thinks Valon's Armor deck is cool and wishes the cards were real.
- He thinks Mai's face heel turn made perfect sense given her trauma.
- He feels the arc started to falter when the villains became too hypocritical. He finds Dartz a poorly written villain for his hypocrisy and the reveal that he manipulated the lives of Rafael, Valon and Amelda.

Thanks for linking that, this guy is really interesting. His other YGO vids are super good, too. It's interesting to see a guy dissect every aspect of the show with a genuine passion I don't see all that often, even among fans.
I thought I had seen similar videos a few years ago, but when I checked the date I was surprised to see how new they were. I guess these are worth checking out.
They really are.
His review scores big points for bringing up the official card game and how filler can sometimes be less enjoyable when products that don't exist for years end up taking center stage. I never thought about it that way because I have a different view point on card advertisement versus making new cards for narrative purposes, but I see why he does it here.
Overall there are points I disagree with, but his argument for his beliefs are well made and have a logic I can follow.

True story, I'd swallow any and all tripe a "YGO DM Super" might have if it contains Joey canonically defeating Kaiba.
