Suicide Squad Movie

To quote Mst3k:

My idea would be to keep the fact that the adversary is her brother as a twist. He shows up, she gets sent in to stop him, returns beaten and says she needs her heart to beat him. Waller refuses and sends in the squad, when it looks like they’re going to lose one of her superiors says “fuck this “ and decides to trust Enchantress. Then we find out that they’re working together as she grabs Waller and teleports to him to start her world conquest plan.

So par for the course for comic book governments.

Thing is, she can if waller force her over and over, she didnt have a way to escape until she contact her brother.

Maybe enchantress brother should have been the villian, because otherwise he just used to kept enchantress out of waller reach.

The brother is entirely redundant. We dont get to know his deal at all, and he undermines enchantress as a threat. Look, there are things I really like about enchantress. Witch-queen from long ago awoken in the present is one hell of a concept, and I am getting very, very vexed with the way hollywood keeps flubbing it. (See also: The mummy).

And the first part of getting it right, is that she should in no way, shape or form rely on a man to be or become a threat.

So, really, have her be superficially cooperative with the people holding a sword at her throat. Have her have (in her head) conversations with June, and take a stab or two at winning her freedom peacefully, and have June get ever more on board with "Kill these shitheads" as it keeps failing. Have enchantress pocket resources on her "Arrest this superhuman scumbag" runs. A brief-case of money here, ripping a contacts list out of dead-shots head there... Then she pays cat-woman to steal her heart and starts murdering. Not cities, just her way up the chain of command, quite obviously with an end goal of "I am going to strangle you with this here executive order authorizing my enslavement".

Watching this trailer again is giving me a cramp.

How - how do you go for this sort of tone and just f-ck it all up so spectacularly? How!? How!!!?

As I understand it, the trailer's tone was sort of the problem.

Basically, they made the film, and it had a tone not dissimilar to the other DC movies—that is, dark and edgy, maybe with a bit more humor. Then a separate group made the trailer (it's normal for different groups to handle the trailers) and everyone loved it. They loved it more than the test audiences liked the actual film, in fact. So the group that made the trailer was hired to recut the film to be more like the trailer. That version tested better... and then for some random reason, they smashed the two cuts together with little rhyme or reason.

It's Frankenstein's approach to movie making.

So essentially, the Comic-Con trailer was probably closer to what the original tone was before the reshoots. I get the feeling that the first act was the most bungled by the change in tone, since the pacing is so off and that's also when the more "stylistic" choices take over the film. If you watch the film again, you'll notice they don't appear at all once the second act rolls around.

Hopefully with Gunn onboard for the sequel, we'll have a movie that feels more like a cohesive whole and probably be closer to what the "Boheimian Rhapsody" trailer promised us in the first place.

And I by that I meant the trailer the featured the song by Queen, not the movie with the same name that was... about... Queen... Movie titles are awkward sometimes.

Doesn't look like anyone's talked about the next Suicide Squad movie, soooo:

• We're getting another Suicide Squad movie, but it's not really a sequel. More of a Soft Reboot?
• It's officially called The Suicide Squad and will be directed and written by James Gunn.
• We're getting replacements, namely:
  • Idris Elba will be Deadshot this time.
  • Harley Quinn will return in some capacity.
  • Jai Courtney is back as Captain Boomerang.
  • Also King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, Ratcatcher (a female one), and Peacemaker
• We're probably getting an evil alien lady.
• Coming August 6, 2021.

Huh. Well, Gunn has proven he has the chops for superhero action comedies with GOTG. Consider me cautiously optimistic.

Update: Viola Davis is returning as Amanda Waller in James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad".

Sure wish Hollywood would do this more often with reboots.

I don't. I prefer a fresh start. But I guess this isn't really a reboot. To me it looks like Warner Bros intends to go for the "continuity? What's that?" approach.

Kinda like what they did with Justice Lea- OH NO!

Joel Kinnaman is also reportedly coming back as Rick Flagg.

To be fair, they seem to have the mindset of "okay, jumping to the big meet up and letting Zack Snyder go nuts didn't work so well. Let's just focus on making vaguely connected movies that are considered good before we start any massive connecting of the dots."

I desperately hope they lean into the skid and make expo-dumping a legitimate in-universe flaw of Flag.

The Katana speech was, without exaggeration, my favorite moment of the film.

... of moments that were supposed to be enjoyable, Boomerang booking it as soon as he could was great.

Hopefully they find something to actually do with Rick Flagg this time.

Being the one trying to maintain some kind of order and focus among this kind of lunatics seems like the logical thing, but let's see if they can pull it off.

Deadshot is being removed from the movie, and now Idris Elba is playing a different character.

Probably Bronze Tiger or Black Spider, then.

I hope it's Bronze Tiger, because, again, that would be awesome.
