Eh, for whatever flaws they have, racism doesn't seem to be an issue with this show.

Why did they even make it a wig they could've just had the actress grow her hair long and then died it orange.

I don't see Starfire as a white woman, as said she's Tamaran. But if we are talking about finding a human actress who is naturally a close match, the red hair, green eyes and mild tan does skew somewhere closer to light skinned than dark skinned.

Like I said, though, is that it seems the production went out of their way to make her not even resemble the character despite the race lift. Looking at pictures of the actress, her natural long, thick wavy hair looks closer to the modern character (not the '80s Hair original) than the curly dreadlock wig.

[checks] Yeah, the actress with straight hair seems like a better fit than the weird dreadlock wig. Even if they couldn't dye her hair orange (dyeing that much hair is a pain in the ass and it might be hard to find a shade that looks good with her skin tone), they still shouldn't have done it this way. I understand that originally Starfire had curly hair, but that was back then, when hair that needed at least a full can of hair spray was commonplace.

When your actress looks more like the character when out of costume, you need to step back and evaluate your choices.

Saying that you don't see Starfire as a white woman and then saying casting a black woman is a Racelift is a pretty clear contradiction.

Speaking of Anna Diop, she's recently disabled comments on her Instagram after constant racist remarks.

[up]People are sadly going to be racist regardless. The trailer could have been perfect and idiots would still be on Anna Diop because of her skin color.

[up]Is he green all the time or just green when he uses his powers? I heard the latter. Still, green is good.

I like Raven. The Age Lift aspect sounds interesting (but will definitely be screwed up). The makeup and clothing are alright, but the special effects are bad.

This is an issue with a lot of alien Ambiguously Brown casting. Lets that Japan does a remake of Doctor Who, casting an Asian actor as The Doctor, a Human Alien always played by white actors. That's still a Race Lift because that is our perception of the character. The only real hurdle to Starfire is skin tone (eyebrows are not really an ethnicity marker), which ranges from pale yellow to bright orange to a natural bronze. As such my perception of the character is not necessarily pale Caucasian, but an ethnicity that falls within a certain skin tone range. White, Mediterranean and Hispanic, while not darker like Black, Indian or Indonesian. I wouldn't consider Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman a race lift, while Jason Momoa as Aquaman is similarly a departure from his typical appearance even though it is a fictional race. Someone more overtly alien like the green skinned Gamora is different, and could be played by just about anyone.

As far as hair color, a better wig could fix a lot of problems, but giving her hair a slight red sheen is not an impossible task. That is the job of the hair and makeup department. Basic makeup is usually 20 minutes, a little extra temporary hair coloring won't take much more time than putting on the wig. Star Trek actors spent upwards of 4 hours every day for their make-up prosthetics.

Honestly, this seems odd. The costume design was on point for most everyone. Robin, Hawk and Dove are incredibly accurate to the source. It seems weird that whoever is in charge of that aspect would be so meticulous with some of the characters, but drop the ball so hard with others.

My thoughts about Starfire are that the outfit we see in the trailer is specific to a scene or an episode, and not her "official" look (I could, of course, be wrong). My complaint about it has been, if the outfit is scene specific, it's not a good image to go with as the first image you show your potential audience. It'd be like if a scene called for her to dress as a cowboy and all the images we're given of her, before ever having met her character, are of her dressed as a cowboy. Seems an odd thing to do; as said, though, I may be wrong, and that may indeed be her final look, and if so, that explains everything. It wouldn't be the Starfire I'm familiar with, but there you go. We'll have to wait and see.

I don't recall who mentioned it above, but Starfire's skin has never been what I'd call "yellowish." I've read every issue of the Wolfman=Perez New Teen Titans, in the original issues, and her skin was originally orange, and became more orange-yellow as the printing improved (in-text, her complexion is described as golden). Her hair started as a light, dusty brown and became red-auburn as time went on. As for Anna Diop, I don't think we can really call it a race-lift as Starfire isn't human, and doesn't look human. The only issue I might have with her playing Starfire is at 5'8", she's half a foot shorter than Brenton Thwaites, who's playing Robin, when she's supposed to be taller than him (but that actually isn't an issue I have at all. )

Like I said, Depending on the Artist Starfire does look indistinguishable from normal human (sometimes the only thing is extra glowy green eyes). But I've shared pretty much all my thoughts on the matter.

I do think Raven is also close, as pale skin, black hair and waif-like is hard to screw up, same with giving her a hooded cloak for her costume. Her portrayal of being a scared girl isn't quite accurate, but it's not like Raven doesn't have those kind of insecurities.

[up] Yeah, this seems to be something of a mash-up between the Wolfman/Perez Titans and the group since Geoff Johns got hold of 'em. It's most of the Wolfman/Perez line-up with characterizations and tone post-Johns.

Finally watched the trailer and... yikes. This looks less like a dark adult adaptation and more like what a stereotypical fourteen year old thinks is dark and adult. "It's night time! Necks are snapped! 'Fuck' is said!"

I really can't figure out who this is for. Half of the actors look thirty, but it feels so much like something you would market to the teen angst crowd.

I don't wanna shrug it off over a trailer, but I seriously wish I was looking forward to this.

@Soble

Of course he is the one that better be gotten right. His portrayal will reflect on how we will see the upcoming Doom Patrol show that is coming out after it!

Also I just now realize majority of the line up for these upcoming live action streaming shows (Doom Patrol and Swamp Thing) are all from the Vertigo line of DC comics which have darker elements compare to regular DC. Kind of makes me wonder why the first live action show for this service isn’t Shade The Changing Man, or Animal Man or (if they REALLY want to be ambitious) motherfucking Sandman (both of them)?

All I'm gonna say is that unless Trump breeds with a cheeto and somehow gets a girl out of the entire mess we're not gonna get anything close to a real life Starfire so we should probably take what we can get.

And everyone hating on the girl cause of her skintone can find an iron pole to sit and swivel on. There are plenty of generically white superheroes left you can still worship in your narrow minded way so lay off.
