Curious, you would think the enthronement ceremony would happen alongside Akihito's abdication ceremony. Given how the latter is uncommon, though, can't really blame them for having separate events.

Also, "multi-layered kimono"? Worn by the Empress? It's Costume Porn time!

[up] *Akihito's

Interesting. So the enthronement ceremony isn't tied to the beginning of the Reiwa era. I thought it was, for some reason. Huh.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -Fighteer

So Typhoon Hagibis appears to have done a number on parts of Japan. The damage looks devastating. sad

It's mentioned already, but a woman died while being rescued by chopper since her stretcher (Think that's the word) fell down since her harness wasn't secured.

Also, some debates are starting since a shelter in Taito turned away a couple of homeless men due to social norms.

Absolutely none. They don't even have power over themselves as individuals, that power rests with the Imperial Household Agency.

Oh really when?

It's why they often cultivate allies within the IHA, so that they can occasionally get a break from the extremely controlling environment. It's unlikely the abdication would've had gone ahead unless people sympathetic to the imperial family hadn't helped them get the word out on what Akihito wanted.

To put it this way, the Imperial family has pushed hard to allow empresses to ascend, but they cant even get that changed when it relates explicitly to them.... There the spiritual leaders, but they have no hard power at all, and arguably haven't had any for centuries.

[up][up] Nooooooooooooo. :c

[up][up][up] Such a shame. I've heard about it, but didn't have an opportunity to visit the region - and would likely not remember about it either.

Was there any reason why? I know Abe pushed for an increase of the consumption tax lately.

For what I get, Japan politician get reaaaaally pissy when the royal family have an opinion of...anything.

But yeah the emperor didnt have any power since...forever.

Ok, I now this is a weird subject....but why is this weird censorship in japan porn about genitalia? is seen borderline nonsensical to me.

If I recall right, it has to do with the morality laws included in the 1945 constitution settlement, but don't quote me on that.

It's been fun.

Its because of western morals being pushed, yes.... Though it predates 1945, and extends back to the black ships.

Somewhat related to a conversation in the China thread.

Which is the general view of the Japanese of the Precolumbine cultures? I remember reading that at some point in the 1920s the Emperor Taisho (I think it was him) tried to link the Japanese with the Peruvians alluding to our past as the Tawantinsuyu as another land of the sun. The land of setting sun I guess.

Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, we should find the absolutes that tie us.

Isn't the prevalence of tentacle porn yet another attempt to sidestep censorship, which somehow worked?

You don't have to censor a penis if it's totally not a penis.

I think the bottom line here is that Japanese censorship bureaus aren't staffed by particularly smart folks.

[up]x3 Relatedly, how does Japan tends to think of Brazil? I ask because a tremendous amount of refugees came to live here after WW 2, and the country is still home to the biggest Japanese community outside of Japan.

BTW I mean historically, I'm sure the country is cringing at what the country became this year as hard as everyone else.

I think the bottom line here is that Japanese censorship bureaus aren't staffed by particularly smart folks.

It's not a matter of intelligence. I remember once reading somewhere that Japanese censors exercise their authority with dictatorial methods, ie. can arbitrarily rule anything illegal if they don't like it and don't get a bribe to let it through anyway.
