Because the miniskirts didn't?
"Yup. That tasted purple."Apparently those were added because the stuntmen were all male and they needed something to obscure the pastel packages.
I agree with the statement that Boob Plate is stupid. It's also incredibly hazardous to the wearer in a way that miniskirts aren't; it places a splitting wedge right up against your sternum.
But ignoring that, I love the new look.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.I didn't like the miniskirts either. My annoyance for accessories like that comes more from the fact that it just screams "we need to put stereotypical feminine stuff on their outfits. Because apparently we thing that our audience is too stupid to get that they're women otherwise."
And yeah, the boob armor is more hazardous to boot. But like I said, other than that I'm fine with the rest of the costumes. I never expected them to be exactly like the show's were anyway.
EDIT: I see that the miniskirts have an explanation in context of the production that makes sense. So, fair enough.
My initial reaction to the image was "What the hell?" but they've quickly grown on me. They have an organic, alien look to them and not strictly powered armor or spandex. The Form-Fitting Wardrobe is sort of inevitable in any sense, because exaggerating the gender differences is the only way to really make them appear different. Even Halo had to do some things to justify male and female Spartan models.
Why do they need to appear different?
The color scheme is enough to distinguish between Red, Blue, and Black. Why do Yellow and Pink need to have boob-molds? Samus Aran and Captain Phasma don't have fake boobs grafted to their armor, and fans love them.

"Yup. That tasted purple."Grumble grumble unnecessary objectification grumble grumble
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Anyone getting a Guyver/Kamen Rider vibe from these costumes?
So Zordon shops at Stark Enterprise? Cool.
^^ I was actually thinking the same thing.
But lets be absolutely honest here, people love Samus and Captain Phasma because their armor is different, not because they are women in gender neutral armor. If all the costumes were gender neutral, then the only thing that makes the women different is that they are shorter. That's not an excuse for slinky chainmail bikini, but it is something to consider when it comes to costume design.

Speaking as an art hobbyist there are ways to make armor look feminine without Chainmail Bikini or boobplate.
That really shouldn't be necessary.
It's still gender specific Form-Fitting Wardrobe. Certainly you can make armor that is flat chested, but then you'll have to exaggerate the hips and legs. That's what Halo does. I don't see that as being all that fundamentally different than the boob plate. But you could also argue that male armor exaggerates the male form with broad shoulders, chest and biceps, sometimes even a codpiece.
Is it our second or first Base Breaker for this movie ?
Anyway, I like the suits, but not the blue ranger and black ranger's helmets: their shapes are really weird. As for the suits, I like the way it feels like something out of Guyver. Somebody said somewhere it looked like they were created by Lord Zedd... Which I would actually like: Either Zordon didn't create the suits and took it from the ennemies or they were designed when Zedd was a good guy. But enough about Epileptic Trees.
I'm not crazy, just creatively different.Had the women had the same breastplate as Jason, Billy, and Zach, they'd still stand out because Trini and Kimberly are thinner than the men. The guys have their armors make them look more muscular.
I wouldn't call it a Base Breaker. It's more of a nitpick. Some of us are irked to see Boob Plate show up yet again in a Hollywood production, but nobody's actually cited that as a deal-breaker with the costumes.
Instead, it's a small piece of a larger discussion about whether female outfits in fiction should be designed to highlight their gender; a conversation that people have been having since before this reboot was a thing and will probably still be having when the sequel rolls around.
Which also gels with the way Rita's costume looks like it's meant to be a Green Ranger suit.
They're going somewhere with this and I like it.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.I thin the base breaker will be suit being diferent, that is usually how you get base breaker
Also, aside from the original, what other team would you like to see adapt? for me will be Time ranger and Space which are the best season of all
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Never mind the boobplate
Why do the female costumes have high heels

Wait, what?
*looks closer*
Oh goddammit.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Honestly, the only thing I can think of is how much the blue ranger looks like the Blue Beetle.
This song needs more love.I had thought they had heels too, but they don't. The color just gives that effect.
To be correct, they have a platform heel. The foot is clearly curved up in the boot.
Which is about as bad.
I will say this, the helmets are bad. Only on the Red Ranger do I get a sense of a creature's form on his helmet.
The other rangers? I'd never know what animals they were without prior knowledge.

I don't think costumes highlighting femininity is inherently bad. It really depends on the costume, who's wearing it and what the purpose of the costume is.
The costumes look, ok. Not great, but not terrible, just ok. TBH I was expecting a sort of Iron Man-like aesthetic from them anyway. They look better than Rita's stupid outfits I think (man that second one is even worse than the first one).
One thing that I don't like about the suits though, once again they put "boob armor" on the female costumes. I hate that, it just looks dumb.
