I've always seen it as a mix. He often litters it with jokes and nitpicky facts. Most of the criticisms aren't all that serious. Of course, you could argue there's slight switching between "So-and-so isn't my girlfriend in this scene" and "The last shot there was three lines on that piece of paper, and now there are six" and "Misheard lines to force a miscommunication cliche" and "We have no idea why this is happening or how it makes any sense"

which have all occurred in videos.

I'd say that it's trying to be humorous, but sometimes make real points. Sometimes they work, other times it doesn't at all.

At the end of the day, cinema sins isn't good movie criticism, nor should anyone uphold it as such. It's nitpicky junkfood. I enjoy it greatly, but that's what it is.

[up] The thing that personally annoys me is when they sin a movie for something that's actually been explained or shown not long before the scene - because it means that either they're not paying any attention to the movie or they're pretending to be stupid in that moment.

And neither really appeals to me. :/

Agreed. I always tell people who criticize cinema sins— "give me something else that keeps the same talking pace, is just as needlessly nitpicky, and entirely accurate. I am not lying when I say I'd 100% adore such a thing."

My only major complaint about CinemaSins, as noted, is when they criticize something for not being explained when it's either actually explained or patently obvious. The rest is fine.

Jeremy doesn't do a good job of answering that really. My stance is that it's mostly his own real opinions, embellished a bit for a joke or for continuity's sake (always complain about how long an opening logo is, always say roll credits when the movie title is said, etc). Though a lot of people hate him because he's shown sign of nonchalance toward criticism on the frequent mistakes he makes, since he and his working partner come from a marketing background instead of a critic background. One tweet asked him about all the mistakes he made in one video and he retweeted "we don't care". They clearly have a working strategy to earn them a steady income from it.

Yeah it seems to be a combination of obvious jokes, running gags for the channel, actual criticism, trope highlighting and the occasional fake criticism for the sake of a gag (which are generally the least popular ones).

It’s very hard to work out which sins fall into which category in his mind, especially as it’s hard to tell when he drops the persona (as he’s done other non-cinema sins content where he’s criticised things for not being explained that were, which means either he was in character during that or he genuinely has an issue with missing things).

Personally I treat it all as comedy, the times he makes stuff up to (comedically) criticise is bad comedy in my mind, but still comedy.

Also I would like to see less of himself going off the rails in an angry rant in his car (like when he heard Disney is remaking Dumbo in live-action.)

The Accentuate the Negative is an issue because sometimes I'm pretty sure he's using hyperbole for comedic effect which is... lost on viewers.

Like in Age Of Ultron. When Banner goes "Has anyone heard from (Asian Lady)," the sin goes "WHO?" I know that was on Critical Research Failure at one point because she was in the movie, but I'm pretty sure the point is that she was so unimportant that it comes out of left field (See: The fact I literally don't remember her name despite seeing the movie multiple times). Not helped by the fact he genuinely forgets/fails to notice some stuff (the shield thing is particularly egregious).

Or in Attack Of The Clones, the "this is what we've come to. A coughing robot." I like Greivous and I understand it's hyperbole to drive home the absurdity of the character.

I swear half those sins were just "it's not the original." I honestly think it's a fine film. I actually prefer Chan's character to Mr. Miyagi, tbh

I just think it's bad because of Jaden Smith, who always seems to be in bad movies except for maybe The Pursuit of Happyness.

Yeah, Chan is an amazing actor, and he does fantastically-well as Not-Mr.-Miyagi in this movie. Counter-balancing that, JLS is not the same and does not do the same.

My only question is, how can mirrors be real if our eyes aren't real?

Needless shade at Kong. I liked Skull Island, stupid as it was.

I haven't seen Skull Island yet, but I liked Rampage, stupid as it was. As an adaptation of a very simple NES game, Rampage had one job: to get a wolf monster, lizard monster, and gorilla monster to punch the shit out of a city.

I feel that the movie fulfilled this requirement satisfactorily. It's a dumb popcorn flick, but it's pretty good at being a dumb popcorn flick.

I do agree with Jeremy's assertion that they shouldn't have spoiled Lizzy's reveal, though. Maybe they could have mentioned briefly that there are three cases, but not actually show the third one land and give the audience time to forget it existed before Lizzy makes her appearance.

Honestly the Ralph+Lizzie segments REALLY felt like they were added after the fact. Like, the wolf hunter doesn't even actually interact with the main plot.

Also, as an aside, Lizzy was my favorite character when I used to play the game. So when the trailer spoiled that George was going to be the Good Guy Monster and fight the other two, I was sad about that.

But after seeing the final product in which Lizzy gets to be the biggest and meanest f*cking thing on the block, I am very pleased. She wasn't the star, but she got her dues. ^.^

Funny story, I actually saw a poster for this film in the theater on my way to watch a different movie. I loved the game as a kid, so I was like, "LOL, how funny would it be if that was an adaptation of the game?" I figured it was just a cool-sounding generic action movie title, but a funny coincidence.

Then the movie I was watching actually had a trailer for the film, and I sat there like, "No. No. Shut up. You cannot be serious right now."

I loved playing the game at the arcade as a kid, yet I somehow didn't even make the connection that this was supposed to be an adaptation before watching the video. I even saw a trailer awhile back. I just kind of wrote it off as a generically dumb action movie.
