Welcome to the Character Development Threads! These shared story exercises allow you to develop your characters in a setting shared by other authors and their characters. No sign-up is necessary; simply look over the last few pages and hop on in. If you need questions answered or a recap, head over to our discussion thread and ask; we’re happy to help. There's also a trope page (with location descriptions and other info).

Archipelago is semi-casual — no violence on the central island, but the rest are fair game. Other islands are built on-the-fly by the tropers whose visiting them, but you should probably grab a few others before having your characters head off — there's not much point wandering an island alone, since this is supposed to develop characters by bouncing them off one another and putting them in unusual situations. Be sure to communicate with the tropers you go with so you're on the same general page.

With thanks to, among many others, Gault, who came up with the initial idea, Nrjxll, who wrote the first draft I shameless ripped off, and the various people who contributed to the trope page location descriptions.

This has made the hub island something of a designated neutral ground for various strange characters and dimensional travelers. A small cluster of buildings has sprung up near the one natural harbor and its dock: a couple of bars, a couple of casinos, several shops, and even the cheap but comfortable Pax Island Hotel. This is not a tourist trap, though, as much as amenities for the visitors that come here for various reasons. The Hotel's entrance leads out to a central square, with a shamelessly cheesy tiki bar calling itself the Big Kahuna and the Pax Island General Store being the most obvious, though not the only, services.

Inland, the island is covered in jungles that rise steeply into a central mountain, covered in ruins that don't seem to exactly match any of the local cultures. Apart from that, though, they're harmless and unrelated to the area's strangeness. The population on the island, humans of mixed origins, are quite used to the strangeness of their island, staffing the amenities and filling newcomers in but otherwise keeping to themselves.

Beyond this hub island, the archipelago grows more mysterious and dangerous. Fogs often cover the ocean, and compasses and other forms of navigation don't always work right. There are at least a half-dozen other islands at any one time, but that's all anyone can say for certain. The docks on the hub island offer numerous boats for visitors to travel to these islands, either under their own control or with the aid of a local sailor. Of course, there's always an element of risk involved with visiting these islands, because you never know quite what you'll find. One rule has proven consistent, though: any truly catastrophic event on an island tends to result in it vanishing into the fog, never to be seen again.

[Big Kahuna]

A burst of white light flashes in front of the demon, and what only could be described as an angel appears. A scrawny short angel with no shirt, slim but still baggy white silk pants, a buzz cut, and a scattering of black body hair, but an angel nonetheless, complete with ridiculously large wings that completely dominate its back. A glowing layer of white light surrounds it, a magical barrier to protect it against anything that came its direction.

"Look honey," the angel sighs, "Just because you're losing your temper doesn't mean you have to cut yourself and get blood all over the floor. Do you know," it glares at Regina shaking a fist, "How hard that is to get out of carpet?" Magic sweeps along the floor, causing the blood to foam and fizzle, "This shit isn't free you know."

Unfortunately for Regina, the nature of the island wasn't willing to forgo stopping violence in the name of ideas.

Her tentacle-intestines retracted back into her body against her will once the angel appeared. Her organs reset themselves as the skin resealed where the self-inflicted wound had previously been. The knife disappearing in a flash as Regina knelt on the floor, crying pink tears.

"I'm sorry, I got angry."

Well, Hayate thought it was over and done with, but unfortunately it seemed that little bit was enough to send Regina over the edge. The resulting scene caught both of their attentions, with varying reactions from them both.

"Inari forgive me...." said Hayate, jaw hanging open.

"...Well, there goes my appetite," said Kaguya, with a look of complete and utter disgust mixed with terror.

Hayate quickly looked between Regina and Iris. On one hand, he really didn't want to see what that monstrosity had planned for Iris. On the other hand, Iris really deserved what was coming for her. She pushed Regina to this point, after all. In the end, Hayate decided that he hadn't earned his job as advisor for nothing.

He quite literally sprang into action, leaping from his seat and performing a backflip in midair. Anyone who looked closely would see his form changing in midflip, and as he landed in between Regina and Iris he definitely looked quite different. His form now, while still recognizable as a fox, had grown to the size of a wolf and had golden instead of red fur. More notably, his one tail had now split up into five. The middle tail was held straight up, and the end was wrapped around a small, glowing white ball. His position was defensive, but most definitely ready for action.

He opened his mouth to say something to Regina, but before he could say a word there was a brilliant flash of light and a being best described as godly appeared in between Regina and himself. In a couple seconds, the situation defused itself. Regina came back to her senses, and all the blood that was split was in the process of being cleaned up.

Hayate kept up the battle position for a couple seconds longer, but once it was apparent that nothing more was to come of this, he assumed a more neutral standing position. After casting a sympathetic glance in Regina's direction, he glared at Iris. "I hope you see what I mean now," he said to her, in a much harsher tone than before.

Once all was said and done, Kaguya just sat, the most confused expression on her face. "Okay, that was weird," she said after a moment or two in silence.

"Tell me about it, you know how often I get a call this far out of the way?"

The angel looks over his shoulder at Kaguya. "Zero times before this one. ZERO. I'm sorry hun, but this just DOES NOT happen."

He glances around, scanning the room, "And for that matter, where in the name of the goddess am I? She might be a bit of a bitch sometimes, but this is totally ridiculous."

His magic finishes its work, floor now completely clean again, the barrier fading along with the magic used to clean it.

Violet found the antenna and checked for any panels or whatnot that she could take out to open up the damn thing. While she worked, she sang softly to herself. There weren't any words. It sounded more like the howling of a wolf, really.

"Whee!" She had found the screws. A moment later, she lifted the back panel off the television.

[Jungle Path —> Ruins]

Still visibly drained and surprisingly exhausted, Esa just nodded until Friedrich changed the topic to spirits. "As I was saying," she said, "in the cities, people forget the spirits. I haven't really thought of why." She frowned. "I see no reason a city should not have as many spirits as a jungle, but something about the city brings many, though not all, people away from their spiritual side. People go to steles not for reflection, meditation, and offering, but only for solstices and desperate prayers. The city we left seemed the same way — I saw no sacred places, only business and noise."

The jungle cleared to reveal the ruins, which Esa studied thoughtfully. She saw no steles, but there was a great building at the complex's heart. She nodded at Friedrich, pointed to it, and said, "there. See how it is tended? Somebody cares about that place enough to save it from the vines and moss that have taken the lesser buildings. That is where we go."

Irilemi considered her options, studying both the stairs and the elevator. Then, slightly louder than was necessary, Irilemi said, "as far as I can tell, we seem to have ourselves a malefactor attempting to guide our actions." She looked warily at the elevator. "Therefore, our path is clear. Firstly, we determine where our malefactor wants us to go. Second, we do not, under any circumstances, go that way." She nodded again at the elevator, then finished, "so, up or down?"

Everything happened so fast, Thomas, George, and Nathan had no time to react. When everything had died down, all three just stared in mortified silence. Then, finally, Nathan stood up.

"Ok. That's it. I'm done." he said, "This is too much. I'll eat somewhere else." He scurried out the restaurant, refusing to look at anyone or anything.

George stood as well, putting money on the table. "For the food. I'm sorry, but I'm leaving too. Thomas, Howe, Iris, I'll meet you all at the hotel." With that, he ran after his son.

Thomas slowly stood, then looked apologetically at everyone. "I...I have to think. I-I'll wait for you all outside." He slowly walked out the door, nervously shifting at everyone who saw him.

[Pax Island ~ Big Kahuna]

Before the real catastrophe—or near catastrophe—had occurred, Iris widened her eyes in mock horror at Hayate's words of warning. "You don't mean," she gasped, "she's going to start rubbing up on me, do you? Oh! The hor- ru- r- WHOA! WHOOOA-HOH!"

Her first sudden shout of surprise was aimed at the spectacular display of self-mutilation and bloodshed presented for the whole table to see. Her second sudden shout—accompanied by a very forceful recoiling that nearly caused Iris to fall backward with her chair—was aimed at Regina's lively innards, quite clearly baying for her blood.

Howell, who had just been about to give Kaguya a teasing half-answer, became distracted by his sister's antics around the time that she had started to make very strange moans. He gave her a look, but before she could take notice, Regina had decided to go into full-anger-overdrive. His eyes widened to their full capacity, small though it was, and, not knowing what else to do, he took the menu in his hand and flung it at Regina's head.

As fortune would have it, the menu sailed right over and landed, upright, in front of Claire on the other table. It didn't matter anyway, as several other people and things had sprung into action to prevent what seemed to be about to occur.

Iris's chair did fall over in the end, though she jumped to her feet rather than fall with it. She stood there, next to the table, looking ready for something while the situation began to clean itself up, and was still standing there while Hayate scolded her, George, Nathan, and Thomas departed, and Regina was left kneeling on the ground, innards back in place and out of sight. Iris's breathing was heavy, but steady. There was more confusion than fear in her eyes now.

She propped her chair back up and sat down very slowly. She placed her hands on the table and furrowed her brow. Finally, she managed to stammer out, "We all get... ang- angry. But publicly" she swallowed, "murdering a person is not- not a good way to ex... to express that anger."

Howell, more relieved once it became clear that the situation was under control, glanced at her for a moment, then put a hand on her arm and murmured, "Iris, don't get smart here."

Even through her tears and sniffles, Regina managed to barely mutter out one word, "Bitch."

Regina stood up from her spot and wiped the tears off her face before continuing, "I don't like calling other girls that, but for you, I'll make an exception," she breathed out and relaxed herself.

"I don't know if there's any other place on this island to hangout now, but I'll try to find someplace else."

Regina turned tail, kept her head high and walked out the Big Kahuna, hoping that someone would be willing to talk to her.

Hayate noted the sudden surge in people leaving the restaurant, among them George, Thomas, Nathan, and Regina. This wasn't quite the experience he was expecting, and while it was interesting he wasn't so sure he liked the aftereffects. He wasn't quite done with Regina yet, but at the same time he wasn't done with Iris yet and so let her take her leave. He'd track her down later.

He then turned to Kaguya. "Kaguya, go with George, Nathan, and Thomas. I have business to handle in here."

Kaguya gave him an odd look, but didn't question him. After all, he had yet to go back to being a normal fox, which probably meant that whatever it was he wanted with Iris, it was very serious. With one final look around, she hurried off after the people Hayate wished her to accompany.

As soon she was gone, Hayate turned completely to face Iris and sat down, fixing her with a decidedly cold gaze. "Care to explain yourself?"

The television's inner workings appeared to be largely the same as one supposedly incapable of absorbing incorporeal entities. The funnel-like cathode ray tube dominated the interior. Looking at the unit head-on, the screen facing toward oneself, the antenna's wiring ran along the left, connected to something housed inside of a metal case, which enabled wire entry via a honeycomb pattern of punched out holes along its sides. Peering inside through these holes, one could see a glossy circuit board, robin's egg blue in color, carpeted with conductive tracks and resistors.

Marla wracked her brain, trying to remember what exactly she saw. CRT, tranmitter, circuit board... something was off. But what?

Howell glanced up at Kaguya as she left, then at Hayate. He paused, glancing between his sister and the usually-a-regular-lookin'-fox, then reached back for his hat, set it on his head once again, and rose to his feet. He gave Hayate a singular nod with an accompanying snake smile, then, without a word, he stepped away from the table, and headed off after Kaguya and the others.

Iris met Hayate's gaze, her own eyes showing little emotion. She took a deep breath, then spoke. "Explain what foxman? My behavior? This situation?" her voice was a little shaky, but still full of indigence, or perhaps an angry regret. She wasn't broken, but she was cracked.

"There isn't going to be much point in explaining my point of view to you. You're a mystical fox creature from Japan. I'm a human girl from 'mundaneville' Colorado. No matter how much I tell you, we're never going to see things the same way. But here, let me say what I can:" she cleared her throat. "I made fun of a 'Gore Demon's' overzealous sexual tendencies. I got carried away, all right? I admit I've got a bit of a mouth on me, especially after a few drinks. I... I got carried away and then what happened? Oh! Oh that's right." Iris lowered her voice and her face took on a more serious expression, "She tried to murder me Hayate. She tried to murder me, in front of everyone here; You, Thomas, Kaguya, my own brother."

She opened her mouth to continue, but it took her a second to find the right words. "And she would have done it too, if it wasn't for some literal goddamn divine intervention. If it wasn't for that, I would be a fucking pile." She winced, holding her eyes shut for a few seconds before continuing, "You've got to consider that. Sure, I was in the wrong, but nobody was going to end up dead because of what I did. Hell, I wouldn't have even said anything if she wasn't so goddamn proud of it all."

[Pax Island ~ Big Kahuna —> Outside Big Kahuna]

Once away from the table, Howell quickened his pace, walking past Kaguya and making his way outside. Once there, he took a moment to scan the surrounding area before he spotted Regina.

Holding onto his hat, he took off again to catch up with her before she went too far. Once he got close, he called out, "Regina! Regina-aaa! We need to talk!"

[Outside Big Kahuna]

Once everyone was outside, Nathan's anger finally boiled over.

"You know, I thought that after that weird dream I had, I could get some sort of normality for once. For once." he ranted, "Instead, I get scared half to death by a talking fox and then I lose my appetite with...whatever the FUCK that was. I swear, if something like that happens again, I'm going to snap. Completely. I just...God!"

"...Well...not sure if your mother and brother are going to believe any of this." George muttered, "But hey, let's not give up on the trip yet, Nathan! I mean, I'm sure something good will happen soon. I hope."

Thomas only paced back and forth, increasingly worried. Iris was literally seconds away from being killed. Had it not been for that strange outside force, she would've been nothing but a bloody puddle in the restaurant. Sure, what she said was absolutely wrong, but she didn't need to almost die because of it. Of course, she probably now knew better after that.

Which made him think; what if he, or one of his neighbors, accidentally said the wrong thing to another creature and ended up paying the ultimate price for it? It scared him. Terrified him, actually.

He stopped when he noticed Kaguya's presence. "Oh! Kaguya! Hi!" he gave a nervous smile, "Did you want to join us or something? Sorry for leaving so abruptly."

"N - no! No! Layi! I... I can... Can still..." Tamara insisted, weakly. Her attempt to sit up was thwarted almost immediately by an intense pain in her ribs. She was barely off the ground before a short, sharp gasp escaped her and she went limp again. Unfortunately, there wasn't much Layi could do for her with just basic medical knowledge and some first aid tools.

Tamara knew how to recover quickly, but communicating her idea was proving to be very difficult, as she grappled with the world spinning around far faster than she was comfortable with, a persistent weakness throughout her entire body, and the pain in her chest limiting her to short and shallow breaths. She might not be in imminent danger of succumbing to her wounds, but she clearly needed some kind of help. "Layi... L-Layi... I... Still... Help you... Just... Need..." She said, her voice faint and shaky. "Sword, Layi. Need my... I Can... Still... Help... Please."

Her sword hadn't landed too far away, and was still secure in its sheath. If Layi was particularly sensitive to magic, she might sense something vaguely unsettling about it... But otherwise, it just seemed like an ordinary sword.

Askeda's arrows may have punctured the softer shell of the beast's underbelly, but they don't appear to have penetrated deep enough to cause any serious bleeding or organ damage. Nevertheless, the crab-creature seemed to be adopting different tactics, taking up a more defensive posture that lowered it body a bit closer to the ground. Maybe it was starting to weaken... Or maybe it was just tired of all the lightning bolts... It was impossible to know for sure, but either way, it was not provoked by Askeda's taunting.

I- I- I-

The sphere rocked slightly, then several cracks appeared along the segment edges. Two segments fell from the sphere and loose whitish looking flaps emerged. Bluish fluid pumped along veins within, and the flaps began to straighten into what looked vaguely like wings. Steam rose off of them as they radiated heat away from the central mass.

I- I- I am-

The wing-like structures rapidly stiffened and dried. They began to flap and beat, sending up a small breeze.

I am- I am fallfallfalling

It awoke in a senseless void. Deaf, blind, mute to the world. The only physical sensations were of heat and weight and moving air.

Most things born of flesh and blood would have panicked, but it was only a physical creature by the most tenuous of connections and panic was never a part of it's nature.

And the absence of physical senses still left it with those more ephemeral. It could sense at least one mind watching it.

Where was this place. It had no memory of deciding to enter this place, but that could simply because so little of it was actually here. Travel had never been a habit it engaged in.

It had an aching suspicion that the young-green-singing was involved. He tended to cause trouble.

At any rate, it did no good to remain in this state.

The sphere began to shiver slightly, with crackling sounds coming from under the carapace.

It spoke to whatever minds were nearest, using the voice that bypassed the need for air or the ability to hear. It was uncertain which language to use, so it ignored them as well, speaking the language of the deep dark reaches of the minds of all naturally evolved creatures. A wordless whisper of I will not eat you filled the air.

Samuel's expression was a perfect blank. "That was fun." There was a mechanical evenness to his voice which suggested a conscious effort at control, at odds with his rapidly-relaxing body language. For a few horrible seconds he'd been back in that apartment block, North Vanda, Ligiea, with about a dozen insane Combat Construct Program products trying to kill him and after him go through the twenty others looking to him to for leadership, and after that the hundred-odd civilians and noncombatant mages on the upper floors.

He closed his eyes and slumped forward, taking a few deep breaths and reciting to himself the shahada in a whisper. Then he was on his feet again, looking almost normal; still a touch of inexpressiveness. "Being impolite can be a crime. It is rarely one demanding summary execution, Hayate. She's right. Sonuera just nodded in response to Krajn's reply and continued to silently follow for a time. Until the sphere... hatched? How else to describe it. "By the dead gods," Sonuera muttered as the creature arose. She instinctively pulled out her knife and readied it, flinching slightly when she sensed the voice, even dimmed as it was by her natural resistance to magic.

[Nulbarak Island]

Layi's voice was gentle, but firm. "Too much moving," she said. "Calm down." Layi was glad Al hadn't let the girl go out on her own. She'd be dead if she had.

Layi was hesitatnt to return Tamara's sword. After a bit of thought, she said, "listen. If you think it will help, I'll get your sword for me. But first, I need you to promise me — now, look me in the eyes and promise me — that you won't make any sudden movements. I know you're in no state to explain why you want your sword... maybe some magic, since I noticed you're a mage. Maybe just to know you have it in your hands. I'll get you your sword... but promise me you won't be making any sudden moves." Layi kept her hands steadily on Tamara, ready to gently prevent any attempt to stand or sit up.

Irilemi nodded. Up was as good as down. "Dah," she said. "Then up we go. And if up proves to be too insane, we go down." ''I do not want to know what happens if that is even worse."

Hmm. Nothing. Oh, well. Askeda had other plans. Particularly now, since the crab had settled down nice and close to the ground. Or, to be more accurate, to the sand. Ordinarily, she wouldn't have done it this early, but she was beginning to get a bit sick of this.

She began extending her arcanoception over the sand in a large circle around the crab. Yes, this would do quite nicely. Keeping her eyes on the crab, Askeda focused on the sera'en of the grains, gathering them together as best she could. Then, with a murmur of "Ha'esol," she magically fused the sera'en together.

While not immediate, the effect was quite rapid. For some distance around the crab, the sand turned into a single sheet of glass, its strength augmented by Askeda's magic to keep it from breaking too quickly. Askeda drew her hand up, and thick spikes shot out from the glass around and under the crab, needle-sharp and, while not unbreakable, quite strong.

"Sure... I'll come along... I don't feel safe around here... by myself..." Kina said uncertainly, following them a short distance behind.

When they headed up the stairs, they would find a maintenance hallway, with signs indicating passenger rooms in many directions, B ahead/fore, C across, and D behind/aft. In addition, there were signs for Engineering, Entertainment, Security, and Vaults in the aft direction, as well as Bridge, Recreation, and Interdimensional Gateway above.

[Quantum Princess, C1 Treasure Room - Adrian Kunstler and Azatha]

"Riight..." Azatha said, looking somewhat unimpressed, "anyways, I'll cut to the point. Unfortunately, there are some... infestations in my ship - mostly a bunch of no-good vigilantes, ghosts, and now, even pirates! I can't easily clean them out of all the dusty corners in this wreck, so if you'd agree to help me get rid of them, I can provide you with any equipment and payment you'd need."

[Nulbarak Island]

"Hah, that's right, run away from us!" Kevin said, shooting another lightning bolt at the crab's body.

He then ran over to Layi and Tamara, and said, "hey, do you two need any help over here?"

[Quantum Princess Theater]

Adrian's hand hit his face in exasperation. Virgil's jaw was hanging open in disbelief.

So close, yet so far, Though Adrian as his hand gradually slid off of his face. He turned to Cogbeard, "I really hope that the loot at the end of this is worth it."

He turned toward the woman, "How about no," He said rather nonchalantly.

[Harbor]

Krajn had heard voices inside her mind for her entire life, yet the - whatever-it-was - communicating with her was the most profoundly disturbing experience she had ever experienced.

She had just begun to receive feeds again from her full nanocam array - the atmospheric disturbance had evidently only disrupted the ones caught in it, not disabled them - when the object on the (wooden!) docking platform came to life. The sight was bizarre, but not unprecedented; in fact it reminded her of scenes she'd accessed of zzym(click) biotechnology.

But then she'd heard (or felt?) the object's communication. Not over her complant, not over any internal system at all. She had no idea how it was doing it, and that was... well, terrifying.

And there is also the fact that "I will not eat you" is not exactly an effective reassurance.

She readied more combat systems in case they were needed. For some reason, her intellectual panic was not carrying over to her emotional responses, which was a nice change from the way she'd been feeling. Leaving her posture as it was, she looked over at Sonuera and Sven and asked "Did everyone else hear that?"

"Hey wait a minute... loot?", the woman said, looking over the group more carefully, "are you guys some kind of... pirates?"

"Because if so... that would be so cool!" she said, putting down the gun somewhat, "Can I join you? I know the ship well!"

Adrian and Virgil looked at each other, and then to Cogbeard.

Adrian coughed, "Well, as long as it's alright with our captain here," He pointed his thumb to Cogbeard, "Because he's in charge of this stuff."
