I noticed lack of one general thread regarding Warhammer Fantasy, so I decided to create a one. :)

Not only Warhammer Fantasy Battle discussions welcomed, but also all things related to Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (regardless of edition).

If anyone has questions regarding Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay's second edition, feel free to ask since I own most of its sourcebooks.

The Cities of Sigmar are getting reinforcements in the form of Master-Blaster. Even though that is a remarkably svelte Ogre carrying the commander, this paring looks tough enough to go Beyond Thunderdome

I like the model quite a bit, especially the slimmed down Ogor.

At first when I saw the preview-image, I thought that he was merely an unusually large human close to Stormcast-size. While I very much like the WH-Ogres presented as Sumo-wrestling Turkic/Mongolian/Magyar raiders, I am intrigued by the idea of "civilized" city-Ogors, with whatever cultural contrasts that entails. I wonder if there will be units of them, equivalent to 40K Ogryns?

[up]Yeah, that is a tad distracting. GW has made other models based on the same theme, with a large humanoid carrying a platform with one or more smaller humanoids inside. Except bedore the large humanoid was much bigger than the little one, like the Mirebrute Troggoth. That's why I'd have put a Halfling or a city-Dwarf to ride the Ogre.

In other news, the 40-year retrospective takes a look at Champions and other followers of Nurgle.

I've noticed that. One of the miniature designers probably has a fetish or something.

While I understand it is quite popular, I wasn't much of a fan of the Chaos Lord of Nurgle/Lord of Plagues model. I've personally always preferred more a more wasted and decaying look, such as the Harbringer of Decay, especially the new one. It's probably my preferance for the undead showing through.

Oh, I agree. I too prefer it when worshipers of Nurgle are more undead-looking, with some other Body Horror than just people being bloated. An idea that I would like to explore would be to copy the Festering Fungus-theme of the enemies in the Weald of Darkest Dungeon, to make a Nurgle warband that is covered with fungal growths.

Today's non-40K preview included:

1. Cities of Sigmar Pre-release box. Some nice models, especially Tahlia Vedra, Lioness of the Parch riding a beautiful Manticore.

2. Warhammer Underworlds Clan Pestilens Skaven. Brilliant models, particularly the censor bearers.

3. Old World: Bretonnian Battle Standard Bearer. He looks very nice. I love the flail.

4. Warcry Kruleboyz Warband, The Monsta-Killaz. The apes are interesting. The Beastnob is cool.

[up]As I've said before, I really like the look of the Cities of Sigmar. Especially as they look like they could be used as great alternatives to existing Empire troops, while also having a bit of a Bretonnian influence. I find it interesting that the army looks remarkably like something out of Darkest Dungeon, particularly the Man-at-arms and the undead enemies. I also like the more heroic updated Manticore, which has a strong resemblance to the Lion of Saint Mark.

Those are some excellent Plague Monks, with a lot of character. Together with the earlier Skaven for Warcry they would be great for making a colourful warband for Mordheim.

Even though that Bretonnian knight is standing still, he has a dynamic pose and vibrant livery comparable with the classic Green Knight. As with the Lizardmen, during the days of WHFB I never had a plan to own Bretonnians outside of individual models. But now I am getting an itch to get some Knights, as well as convert some NPCs with the range.

The Monsta-Killaz are excellent! The skull-helmets make them look like Kruleboyz-equivalents to Savage Orcs. It's been previously noted how the Kruleboyz look a lot like the more extreme Orcs in The Hobbit, so it's appropriate that the Beastnob looks like he could be a general for the Gundabad Orcs.

Weren't the Mordheim Skaven only Eshin, or did they add Pestilens later?

Today on Warhammer Community: Blood Bowl Star Player the Wight Ivan ‘the Animal’ Deathshroud. Reasonably good, but could have been a bit more dynamic.

I honestly do not remember. All I remember is that using slave-rats with slings was considered the height of Munchkin-tactics. Either way, I don't think it would be too hard to customize a non-Eshin Skaven warband for Mordheim.

With those claws Ivan reminds me a bit of the Shredder, but he could also be an undead pit-fighter raised to serve a vampire. I agree that for Blood Bowl a more dynamic pose would be fitting, but this pose is kinda like Vega/Balrog in Street Fighter, as if he's taunting his opponent to dance.

I like to see the steampunk-y elements of the Empire returning, which makes it look like a fun army to field. I could see these guys converted to stand at the ramparts of a moving fortress, like the old Steam Tank, but bigger. The Cities of Sigmar looks like it could be the AOS-equivalent to the Astra Militarum, a force of "ordinary" mortals going against impossible odds and sometimes winninga against supernatural horrors.

They do actually have walking fortresses in the form of cogforts. The Cities of Sigmar have had steampunk elements (mixed with magitek) in the lore for a while now, it's just that they haven't had any new models until now.

[up]I will be surprised if that doesn't become an official miniature at some point, at least a Forge World piece. But I can see how it could be converted by using the legs from a Soul Grinder, or a Helstalker for a smaller tank.

Today on Warhammer Community: News on the Cities of Sigmar range (and a side note for the Old World range).

Basically a number of models are no longer going to be part of the Cities of Sigmar but, to quote the article: "Many of these aren’t gone for good, and will in fact be returning in due course under the banner of Warhammer: The Old World, as reinforcements for the High Elves, the Wood Elves, and the Empire"

The units being removed are:

  • Freeguild: General on foot; crossbows/handgunners; guard; Hellblaster/Hellstorm; Pistoliers/Outriders; greatswords, demigriph knights
  • Aelves: Phoenix; Phoenix Guard; Wildwood Rangers/Eternal Guard; Sisters of the Thorn/Wild Riders; Noble Prince; Shadow Warriors/Sisters of Avalorn.

Of these, the only one that I am surprised about is the demigriph knights as they do fit with all the other griffin based creatures in the setting.

The Steam Tank, Celestial Hurricanum, and Imperial Griffon are still part of the range.

Reading the bit about making armies with humans fighting alongside elves or dwarfs puts the wheels turning in my head. I'm getting a desire to kitbash some of these new Sigmarite troopers with elf-heads, as well as convert dwarfs to have the same type of gear.

I mean, it's especially unsurprising because not only were most of those kits kludged into the Cities of Sigmar just so GW could keep selling them, for most of them they didn't even bother to update the photos with AOS-standard round bases.

It is pretty impressive that they managed to keep the square-based pictures for those miniatures' entire tenure in AoS.

This time the 40-year retrospective takes a look at something much more recent than many previous entries: the first Stormcast Eternals. I've softened quite a bit on the Sigmarines (and AOS as a whole) over the years, mainly because the Stormcast and other factions have so many good models for conversions.

[up] It didn't hurt that they 1) eventually got around to including key systems like "coherent army-building rules" or "movement rules that do not hurt the user's soul like the initial release" and 2) got better at designing Stormcast models.

I mean, I still don't play - I'm not sure how the play experience is distinct from 40K at this point apart from having more melee in it, and I've already got armies for that game that I'm neglecting - but I have no problem with it existing, and I've been picking up some of the models lately for other projects, even including some Stormcast that I'm reworking into ghosts bound into suits of armour.

As I've said before, AOS as a game and setting hasn't really managed to catch my interest, beyond supplying cool stuff that can be used for something else. I bought some Stormcast because they look like they could be turned into Draenei, along with lots of other potential conversions, such as the obvious Astartes-kitbashes. Those ghosts in armour look like something from Pillars of Eternity, with the mixture of steampunk-y soul-manipulation Magitek. [tup]

My atention for AOS goes back and fort, I havent read any of the novels but I keep check the wiki, I like how weirdly diferent it is and the best way to sell for me is warhammer spelljammer/planescape to warhammer forgotten realms. Eventually I will read it

Today on Warhammer Community:

1. Warcry: Cities of Sigmar warband the Wildcorps Hunters. Very nice models. I like the crossbows.

2. Warhammer: Old World Development Diary: Three rules changes and one not changing.

  • No set number of models per rank anymore.
  • Character creation options.
  • Regiments will "give ground reluctantly rather than immediately breaking and fleeing".
  • Magic in the regular phases rather than in its own phase.

I don't know why GW seem to have an allergy to units breaking and magic/psychic phases. This is creeping into all their games. At least character creation appears to be staying rather than going the AoS and 40k route.

[up]The Wildcorps Hunters look really nice. They do fit in well with the previously seen Cities of Sigmar models, so they can easily be used to further individualize an army of them. The Wildcorps Hunters also resemble the earlier Hexbane's Hunters a bit, though I think they are leaning more towards a Bretonnian influence than Empire. So they would also fit well in a knightly retinue.
