TLP Crash Rescue - Fixing prematurely launched TLPs and pages

Go To

Prematurely launched pages and pages that weren't fully fleshed out at the point of launching, are a big problem. Since these usually share several problems at once, this thread is aimed at re-running them through the TLP for fixing - the usual fix - or cutting them if they are too bad.

Problems this thread deals with include bad names, not enough/bad examples, unclear description, etc.

For the interested, here's a list of recently created pages. Launches

Note: Please do not request a mod to unlaunch drafts that don't have any issues besides lacking a launch notice/24hr launch notice. While 24hr launch notices are mandatory, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you see a draft's sponsor launch a TLP without an announcement, it's best to remind them of our TLP Guidelines first. If they continue to repeatedly launch drafts without a launch notice, you can report them on Ask The Tropers or the TLP Community Issues thread.

Super House Of Dead Ninjas was created in November, yet it still has no tropes. I messaged the creator.

My Little Pony The Movie was created 3 days ago, and has only two tropes on it's work page, one of which is a Zero Context Example.

Powerpuff Girls Re-Imagined was also created 3 days ago, and has only two tropes, one of which is a Zero Context Example and has hyphenated title . The work also has YMMV page with only one Zero Context Example, a Fridge page that is blank apart from a single letter and an unindexed WMG page that contains only "Needs to be edited and new information*".

The My Little Pony: The Movie (2017) page is my fault, though I had plenty of reasons for opening it up. When the logo for the movie showed up, I thought it was the right moment to make the page for it right then and there (As I got tired of the recap page having nothing but a link to an article about the movie representing it). There were also Trivia and WMG pages about the movie that didn't have a main page connected to them. I didn't notice them until after I made the page, so I added the WMG page as a subpage, and transferred everything in the Trivia page to the one I already made. I wanted to give the page a better story synopsis, but I couldn't find one that had a better explanation then "Bad stuff is happening and the ponies need to save the day". I was going to continue working on the page by adding in more information that I could find to the best of my abilities, but I have a bad habit of setting up work for myself and never getting around to it (Which is no excuse, mind you). If you want, you can lock the page until actual information about the movie does pop up.

The storm has now resided, the wolf now rests.

Act Of True Love Stalemate.

Atrocious name, and even the TLP basically said it's The Same But More Specific of More Hero than Thou (specifically, MHTT but, motivated by personal affection which.... Isn't a horribly huge distinction, in my opinion).

8 hats, though.

Full Metal is an incredibly underdevelopped title trope. No YKTTW archive either. It doesn't even ascribe any meaning, it's literally just a list of works with the words "Full Metal" in the name.

ETA: Scratch that, looks like I was half asleep. It's an ambiguity page, but is this really a title that people are liable to get confused over? There are only like 5 inbound links as well.

The Hyde And Seek trope is at least one year old going by the history, but it doesn't many examples, and those are often lacking in substance.

I thought the bare minimum was three examples? (Times change, so maybe five is way too few?) If it helps as a defense of the trope, the name is an actual term that appears in media. The wikipedia article suggests that it's present in at least eight works (none of which I'm familiar with), only one of which is included in the example list on the recently launched page.

(No, I don't know why none of us thought to include them.)

Three is technically the minimum, but unless it's a really rare trope, it's a really bad idea to launch with that few.

I don't see a problem with the title, even though it sounds like a snowclone, since it is actually used outside of this wiki. Also, I don't think it's too close to Appeal to Worse Problems, since it's used in a different way: ATWP is basically "Don't do this, because people are starving in <impoverished region>" (a negative usage), while PP is "Do this, because people are starving in <impoverished region>" (positive usage).

It could use some more example, though, but I think it would be better to add it to the "Needs more wiki magic love" list than to send it back to TLP.

Mmm... I don't know that it's quite that clear. From the usages on the page, it seems to waver between "this is a good thing to use because people won't understand this is a problem unless we exaggerate it" and "this is a bad thing because we're making moderately poor people/countries look like they're hellholes". Which isn't necessarily a problem, as Tropes Are Not Bad and there are other tropes with both positive and negative uses.

That said, my first two guesses on what the trope name meant before clicking through did not match the actual intended usage, so it might still not be the best name.

Pagani800 Since: Jan, 2017

On this site, any name with the X Porn format tends to mean that X is loved and desired by the tropers. This doesn't apply to poverty here. In fact, the examples want us to fight poverty by doing this action.

[up][up]This trope is using an image poverty to get you to help deal with that image, while ATWP gets you to care about poverty somewhere else instead of a "small" problem.

Christ, that's an awful name. From it, I assumed it was about some sort of establishing shot showing that "yep, this character certainly is living in squalor."

Instead it's the pretty specific "show impoverished people and areas to tug their heartstrings" and the examples are... not good. Like, really not good. Going from them I really can't tell what the trope is actually supposed to be. Especially since in the examples, one is basically an out-of-universe criticism, 3/5 are discussed tropes, and the fifth is a parody.

In other words, there's not a single straight example on the page and that's not a good sign.

Hmm, I jsut counted the examples and didn't check them out in-depth. My bad.

And Pagani, you have a point about the name. The "X Porn" snowclones usually imply some sort of fanservice-like exposure of X. Scenery Porn is about showing lots and lots of beautiful scenery, for example. So Poverty Porn would mean a work the really wallowed in showing how poor some people are, perhaps not because the audience likes poverty, but because it's touching or because they want to make an appeal.

But here, the trope seems to be more about how the depcition of poverty is used rather than about the depiction itself - as if Scenery Porn were a marketing trope about travel commercials. So maybe it is a bad snowclone after all.

Before I looked at it, I thought it meant, "showing just how down on his luck character (usually protagonist) is". Which is a major misread.

Title needs work, and the examples are poor. There might be something there, though, so I say kick it back.

Concerning the name being "misleading," I would like to point out False Cause, which sounds like it's a trope in which the cause of a Well-Intentioned Extremist is untrue unbeknownst to the extremist (his cause is literally false on a fundamental level but he fights for it without realizing it). Except the trope is actually the conflation of correlation and causation. And False Cause has been around since 2010. Basically: I don't think the "misleading"-ness of the title is enough in and of itself to justify a rename.

Furthermore, it's more like a false snowclone. Since the title is an actual term, I think it would naturally attract more search engine links than any other name. A line could be included in the description explaining that it has nothing to do with Scenery Porn or the other X Porn tropes.

Kitten Named Woof is rather minimalist as a work page.

Update: I've moved it to the proper title, and buffed out the examples a bit in doing so.
