Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

Oh my god.

First minute, "I can now say there is a correlation between pornography and demonic activity."

Then a few minutes later, we get a massive interrogation by ultraconservative parents about if their son kissed his girlfriend, if it was in the front or the backseat of his car, and telling him he's too young to date even though he looks 20.

"It’s funny this movie is anti-porn, because considering the acting level you would probably think you were watching porn if you opened it in a random spot."

Also, at 1:20:00, someone walks into frame, realizes the movie is filming, then quickly walks off. It's like, hard not to notice, so much so that at first I thought it was part of the movie!

I was just thinking about how I was given a Chick Tract while walking home from school yesterday that I only realised was one and not just a book of coupons for online movie purchases when I flipped through and saw the tell-tale gaudy art and bullshit storyline, and I thought "Hmm, maybe we could squeeze in the movie pastiche of Dark Dungeons at some point this Halloween season."

I mean, it'll probably be better than most other movies we've covered.

[up]We have seen this in the chat before. If I remember correctly, it was a web or video series broken up into "episodic" segments. I don't think I've ever seen it presented as a single long-running feature. Anyway...

Oh, HO-OH-HOOOOOOOoooooooo...

This very special Friday marks Kung Fu Friday Day, when we decided amongst ourselves to dedicate a day each week to martial arts action (Although, funny enough, our yearly rituals evolved to completely ignore "Kung Fu Friday" for the rest of October, after this Friday, so we can dedicate the rest of the month to Halloween and Horror).

This year, we'll be settling down with the last-ever movie directed by one Godfrey Ho (and with Cynthia Rothrock of Undefeatable collaborating with him, to boot). Cynthia Rothrock plays a tough city cop, and Loren Avedon (a forgettable name/face who we've forgotten after plenty of forgettable kickboxing movies) plays an ex-con fresh out of prison. Together, they fight drug crime.

It's Manhattan Chase...

Oh, HO-OH-HOOOOOOOooooooooooo...

Kicking off a very special Kung Fu Friday with another episode of Takeshi's Castle.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we revisit Godfrey Ho's very last masterpiece (Filmed on location in NYC), Manhattan Chase, starring Cynthia Rothrock!

Alright, we're finally getting our Halloween season off in full swing with a bang: A revisitation of The Deadly Spawn ([awesome][awesome][awesome]), a personal favorite of FBI Special Agent Francis York Morgan (and Zack), as mentioned in Deadly Premonition.

Just came back from seeing Joker.

I won't spoil anything, so I'll give some brief thoughts here.

I think it's important that this movie portrays a main character with an invisible disability/disorder (specifically, anxiety or upsetting situations cause him to laugh uncontrollably). It shows what it's like to live with it, and how others treat him for it. Considering we're living in a time in which mental health is being destigmatized little by little, this is another important step.

Also, I think the reason so many people saw this movie naturally was because of its connection to well-known superhero universes. If it weren't about the Joker, far fewer people would have seen it. But as it is, people are being exposed to some well-told stories with important messages just because those stories involve their favorite characters. Which is awesome.

Anyway, we'll be kicking off with another old video featuring a "horror" video game from cRiT1KaL and more of Dark Dungeons.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we settle down for Argento and Goblin and witches with the original Suspiria!

I can now safely say with no ambiguity or hesitation that Annihilation is the only film i have seen thus far that has actually done cosmic horror correctly.

In my heart there metastasized a nebulous, amorphous dread. By the end, it progressed into implacable horror.

This is how you do Lovecraft right.

Horror is generally a rollercoaster ride for people (as Prom pointed out in the chat). People don't really want to be scared - they want to be entertained.

I once read a book that had a reputation for being genuinely disturbing. I read like 1/3 of that ~300 page book in one night, then flung it across the room, and stuffed it in the trash. I would later read on Amazon that my experience was hardly unusual. Lots of people talked about finding the book gripping the entire time and not being able to put it down after they'd started, regardless of its length, and lots of people also talked about destroying it - including one person who burned it! It was amazing that one work of fiction could have such a powerful effect on people. Including the author, a recovering alcoholic, who resumed heavy drinking while working on the book. His wife said that the dark subject matter was what did it to him.

Was it gripping? Yes, very. Was it entertaining? No, it was not.

And now there are people saying that Joker is genuinely horrifying instead of the "fun" kind of scary.

[up][up][up] Yeah, you need to share the name of this book.

Anyway, I've never seen tonight's movie before, but I sure as hell remember seeing the VHS tape every time I'd browse the horror section at my local Blockbuster. One look at the title and box cover, and you just know the plot writes itself: An American family moves to Mexico to fabricate dolls, but their toy factory happens to be next to a Sanzian grave and the toys come into possession of an old, malicious spirit.

Meet Dolly Dearest, with Sam Bottoms (Brother of Timothy) and Rip Torn...

The book is this one. I had no idea the horrors that lay within. The evil little shits get away with it at the end. But I never got that far. I stopped right when one of the characters was about to cross the Moral Event Horizon.

It's just amazing how many of you have also destroyed the book as well! I thought I was the only crazy one and have never felt that way before or since. It says something about the effect of this book on the psyche.

I will say this: this book makes Joker look downright tame. I'm not kidding. Want to feel your soul being destroyed? This will destroy it.

After looking up the book you named, I disagree. Let's Go Play at the Adams is about more or less realistic human nature, and how fucked up it can get, how people can influence other people to do evil things they otherwise wouldn't have. That's terrifying when it's set in a suburban setting that, although the 1970s, could easily be today with minor tweaks. It's the sort of thing that feels close to home.
