For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

Alright, we're starting off our annual Halloween season as best we can with a forgotten episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we pay Greydon Clark's Wacko its due.

SNL ran a segment last night that would actually fit well with tonight's movie. Not yet sure if it should be watched immediately before or immediately after the movie, but it's a clever little joke.

Anyway, we'll be continuing tonight with a movie that wowed us from the moment we first watched it: It Follows ([awesome][awesome][awesome]).

There's a lot to absorb in this movie. Personally, what I've loved the most about this one is how well the movie evokes so much of the styles of horror movies from the late 70's/early 80's—from the many tight and "claustrophobic" camera frames and suburban environments (echoing Carpenter's Halloween) to the shambling movement of "It" (resembling a Romero zombie) to the synthesized muzak score (harkening back, again, to Carpenter's own compositions for his movies).

And, best of all, it emulates its influence while still managing to find its own unique identity in a black ocean of forgettable remakes, rehashes, and reboots.

It Follows is a great movie, and I'm very looking forward to seeing it again.

Meanwhile, I came across a "summer review" of the current cartoons on TV and Netflix, and it's convinced me to obtain 3 cartoons to watch on my own time.

This video convinced me to check out Disenchantment, The Dragon Prince, and the new Duck Tales I originally disdained. She said that the storytelling got far better after a specific break the writers took, and apparently that break paid off, with vastly better storytelling and less dumb humor. AWESOME. That's exactly what I wanted from the show (well, that and making Webby no longer a Mary Sue). I'll definitely be checking it out.

Tonight, It Follows.

And if we survive tonight, tomorrow it will no longer follow.

Before that, a pre-show of spooky (maybe) stuff!

I just noticed Sam from Atypical plays one of the guys in the friend group. Since I watch Atypical, that's super distracting!

Tonight, we follow up with a remake of The Lift ([awesome][awesome]), a Dutch horror movie about a killer elevator. The director of the original movie, Dick Maas, returned to this story, I assume principally to make the the original story more appealing to American audiences.

This version shifts the setting to a New York City skyscraper, and features a strong ensemble cast with an intriguing handful of familiar names and faces, including Michael Ironside, Naomi Watts, Ron Perlman, and Dan Hedaya(!) ...If you ever find a situation where you have to connect Mulholland Dr. and Alien Resurrection in six degrees of separation, this movie and Dan Hedaya is your link.

This movie was originally released as Down (aka The Shaft; we'll be using both titles interchangeably).

So I found an interesting anime horror anthology that could make for an interesting preshow this Halloween season, called Pet Shop Of Horrors, focusing on a vaguely demonic[? it's never truly specified] entity that runs a unique little pet shop in Los Angeles' Chinatown district that, a la Twilight Zone, deals karmic, often cosmic justice for the complete and utter assholes that walk through his store by giving them bizarre cryptids that will inevitably dole out the required punishment as he's being investigated by an LAPD detective for the disappearance of his partner. It's only four episodes long, and the entire dub is on Youtube. What caught my eye was how the first episode was described: A mixture of The Twilight Zone, Troma-style horror-comedy, and Night of The Lepus.

Behold Pet Shop Of Horrors:

[up]I'll keep that in mind. We'll be sure to rewatch our favorite Japanese zombie movie sometime this month, so this could potentially go well with that.

Anyway, right now, I got another late-run episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? which I don't remember in the slightest.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we're going Down The Shaft (Ha! See what I did there?)...

I'm looking forward to this one tonight: The 1966 adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat ([awesome][awesome][awesome]).

There are no words. It's just friggin' awesome. And how's this for a movie poster, eh?

Then, at the top of the coming hour, strap in to revisit the wonderful sights and horrors of Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat.

I've been engaging in a thread about horror movie sequels elsewhere on these forums over the past few days, when it suddenly occurred to me that we haven't been thinking much of the 'Food of the Gods' movies in a loooooong while, and that's criminal.

Anyway, YouTube's sorted out now. We didn't run a trailer last night, but I'd like to run what I originally had planned for tonight: The combined forces of George A. Romero and Stephen King orchestrating the anthology horror film Creepshow!

Okay, we got that other classic episode of [Rip Torn's] Ghost Stories about the woman with the fear of flying (being the sole survivor of a past plane crash), and a new video from cRiT1KaL.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we're gonna be enjoying ourselves for a while with Creepshow.

So, I found this movie on TCM one or two Halloween seasons before I joined you guys, but I highly recommend this one. It's a 1977 Japanese surrealist horror comedy that is such a memorable experience that I can't divulge more than what Critereon once memorably billed it as an episode of Scooby-Doo directed by Mario Bava. Unfortunately, it seems like it was never dubbed, but from the footage alone it's too good of an experience to pass up.

For your considering, House [Hausu]:

Anyway...

POP QUIZ: You discover a thick, white, viscous substance bubbling out of the Earth's crust. The right thing for you to do is...

  • A) Inform any authorities or scientists of your immediate discovery.
  • B) Ignore it.
  • C) Stick a finger in it and eat it.

If your answer is "C," then congratulations! You have just discovered the newest, tastiest snack treat and are set to make a killer profit on the market that can threaten to put Famous Amos Cookies out of business, and nothing bad can ever happen, surely.

Get ready for The Stuff.

I remember my older brother saying to me when the movie was on TV, "You ever hear of The Blob? Well, this is The Stuff." It never occurred to me that the movie might be comedic in some way.

But here it is now. And before that, I'd like to ask all of you, Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Find out tonight, same bat channel, same bat time!

Which is https://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven right now!

Tonight: My favorite late-90's Hong Kong zombie film reimagining Dawn of the Dead as a claustrophobic horror-comedy (which I sadly won't be around for, thanks to a last-minute change for my work shift)—Bio-Zombie ([awesome][awesome][awesome])

It's a zombie! It's biological, since it's a (formerly) living thing, therefore it's a Bio-Zombie!

A redundant name perhaps, but that's what they called it.

Pre-show got us some horror anime (Petshop of Horrors) and other miscellany. For the aftershow, I found a song that might be the perfect song to follow up any horror movie with during Halloween time.

Come on and join the spooky fun! https://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

Tonight... What Wes Craven's Scream did for slasher flicks in the late 90's, Robert Rordriguez's The Faculty does for alien parasite movies with an even more sensational cast ensemble.

(What ever happened to Josh Hartnett, anyway?)

First up, Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Then, we got one of the most underrated cast ensembles of the late-90s:

  • Jordana Brewster
  • Clea Duvall
  • Josh Hartnett
  • Salma Hayek
  • Piper Laurie
  • Christopher McDonald
  • Bebe Neuwirth
  • Robert Patrick
  • Usher

...And I'm not even gonna mention who else. It's The Faculty.

[up]There was a Skylight Freerange 1? What the hell is a Gachduine?

Anyway, tonight it's our favorite 80's metal horror movie: Trick or Treat, starring that dorky kid from Family Ties as a dorky kid in 80's metal fashion.

(But, of course, since the DVD era, we all know the real stars are Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne and absolutely nobody else)
