Rename (Alt Titles crowner 3-6-12): Red Eye

So this is a trope about showing someone the whites of your eyes. And it's called Red Eye. Which also happens to be colloquially used in many different expressions, none of which have to do with this trope. There's also other problems, but I'll just copy a paragraph from the article that demonstrates a few more issues:

"Not to be confused with the Galaxy Angel gameverse villain. Or that one guy from Pokémon Ranger. Or the beer cocktail. Or the espresso drink. Or the Australian energy drink. Or a late-night bus or train. Or the fictional drug from Cowboy Bebop. Or the result of a camera's flash reflecting off the retina(s) of the subject(s) of a photo. Or the thriller movie starring Cillian Murphy. Or the manga. Or that late-night show on the Fox News Channel. Or the homing missile system. Or ham gravy. Or just regular old red eyes. "

What do you think? Rename to something like "Eye Pull" or "Eyelid Pull"?

Yeah, this is a bad name.

I agree it need a new name it's easy to confuse it with Red Eyes, Take Warning and Red Eyes. How about Eyelid Pull And Tounge Taunt?

I liked the one you had, "Eyelid Pull Taunt" more than the one you have now, because it was short and clear.

Just looking at Google images, it seems like the Japanese term involves the tongue, but the French term does not.

IMO Eyelid Pull Taunt would be a good name even if it also involved hopping on one foot.

That's because Mon oeil mean "my eye" in french.

Alright then Eye Pull Taunt is probably better anyway. The description makes it look like sticking the tongue is in both French and Japanese versions.

On that note, it probably bears being pointed out that the large majority of the page's wicks are Japanese works and refer only the Japanese version.

Nearly all of its wicks for pages that aren't specific to Anime & Manga works or Japanese culture (which isn't much) mistake the trope for the movie of the same name. The only exceptions in this regard are related trope pages (Blowing a Raspberry, Red Eyes, Take Warning, etc.), indexes, and the page for the movie Red Eye itself, which makes a note not to confuse it the movie for this trope. Still, that only amounts to ten misused out of wicks out of 53.

Yeah, the name is even based on the Japanese term for it akanbe which is a corruption of akai me which means red eyes.

20% misuse is an "only"? I didn't know that.

Still, if it hasn't been massively misused for any of the many, many possibilities listed in that quoted paragraph, that is rather remarkable. OTOH, if there's a name that's more specific to this action that would free the current name up for one of those in the quoted paragraph that doesn't have a more specific name, I think that's ideal.

According to The Other Wiki, this is called Akanbe.

Eyelid Pull Taunt since you suggested it.

I think we should just call it the Akanbe Taunt. Japanese name for a Japanese cultural trope, like Fast Eddie says.

I'd get behind that. This is primarily used to refer to occurrences in Anime & Manga, both on and off the page. As long as we're positive this isn't much more commonly found in other cultures than the current wicks and examples would suggest, I'd be fine with that.

Yes, but I haven't found anything on the wiki referring to its use in French culture, apart from the French redirect.

Which doesn't really mean it doesn't appear in French works, given how disproportionately well American, British, and Japanese works are troped compared to everything else.

Eyelid Pull Taunt works fine for me.

Apparently, the French use it to express disbelief over something they've been told.

But it isn't used to refer to French works; only Anime & Manga is substantially represented (It's even cataloged as specifically being an Anime Trope), with a barely measurable handful of American cartoons.

And the trope is used to convey none of it, save for a throwaway line in the description.

Yes, but why close ourselves off to the possibility that we will need it for both in the future? We can give it a plain English, descriptive name that leaves things open for non-Japanese occurrences of the trope. Everyone wins and less work in the future, potentially.

I think the French usage to express disbelief is a different trope from the Japanese usage to express...disrespect, or whatever. So I'm comfortable excluding it, if it comes to that.

Eyelid Pull Taunt should be a redirect.
