I hate hipsters.

And yet I myself am a hipster, since I dislike popular things (though less because they're popular and more because people keep talking and talking and talking about them).

So, I think I hate myself.

meh, nothing wrong with some hipsterism. It means you look for underground shit that you enjoy. It's only when you're a complete snob about the things that you like (popular or otherwise) when you deserve a kick in the balls and to die in a fire. And to then throws yourself at the ocean and drown.

Most of the people I've met who say they hate hipsters... are hipsters.

I have never encountered any hipsterism in Real Life. At least, I don't think so.

Then again, I am fairly clueless in matters of music, both mainstream and less so, so it's not particularly memorable to me when someone mentions some musicians I don't know of...

But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.

Before we enter the land of personal idiosyncracies, Westerner, let's denote what makes a hipster a, well, hipster, according to the internet:

  • Taste for kitschy things, which are "liked" in a most ironical and derisive fashion and are supposed to come off as satirical, rather than seriously.
  • Taste for underground media.
  • Dislike for so called "mainstream" media.

Notice that number one and number two are not conflated together, as taste for underground media does not mean dislike for mainstream media, as a hipster can like mainstream media in a fashion as described in the first point.

Which means that, basically, yeah, a hipster can watch Transformers and enjoy it, under the right frame of mind.

So, it's Special Snowflake Syndrome, but expanded into an entire subculture?

All subcultures are based around the idea that they're all special snowflakes, dude.

I've had an anti-hipster sentiment before I even knew the word hipster... Though it's probably just as retarded as is being a hipster. At the end of the day, all subcultures are shit, the concept of subculture itself is shit.

Edit: In fact, I remembered, I once thought up some kind of graph that went like "mainstream guy -> hipster -> anti-hipster -> likes whatever he likes" with the respective class of person always thinking he's "cooler" than the previous ones.

Liking whatever you want while believing your tastes to be inherently superior to everyone else is da best.

FYI, Transformers has some sort of "underground" stuff itself. Specifically the stuff Fun Publications does.

[up]Yeah, I thought you were. Fun Pub doesn't put out much stuff to "watch" besides af ew shorts and script-reading plays. Just thought this was a good chance to mention obscure TF stuff.

People call me a hipster, and I sometimes joke about it.

I'm not sure that it is true - I'm simply into things that I find pleasing, and don't care if it's labeled as mainstream or alternative. My tastes include a lot of really mainstream and really underground things, really.

I kinda thought the opposite of a hipster is a clique-member. A hipster feels good about him or herself because he or she feels that she is rebelling against the man, a lone beacon of individuality. A clique-member feels good about him or herself because he or she is a member of a tightly-knit group of people with very similar interests (and often, very similar appearances). Chaotic Neutral (or Chaotic Stupid) versus Lawful Neutral (or Lawful Stupid)?

You could say that I'm an "anti-hipster", in that I usually try to give things that hipsters hate a chance. Mainly because I spent way too many years being labeled as a weirdo for no reason, I'm not going to try to be one. But I don't take pride in how mainstream I am.

What I don't like about "hipsters" is that they're overdoing irony. I prefer things I can enjoy in a straightforward, honest-to-goodness way.

Also, they seem very susceptible to hypes like 'the Internet changes everything' and related empty talk.

Rule#1 If you admit that you're a Hipster, you have just identified yourself with a group. Which means you are Mainstream. Which means you aren't a Hipster.

In conclusion, Hipsters are a myth.

The real reason why hipsters are a myth, though, is that they're just memetical construct to make people feel bad for enjoying underground things and/or not caring much about mainstream works.

honestly, everyone should like whatever they want and let that be it, but this is the internet where everyone just has to be the Sole Arbitrer of Taste.

I've never put much stock in hipsters. I mean, supposedly, one moment, there's nothing, then, suddenly, BAM! hipsters ruining everything. It's just too far-fetched.
