X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

I mean, Nightcrawler already fights with Swords, so I can deal with him doing it.

but why does Logan need Swords? He's already got three on each damn hand.

Storm and Cyclops definitely do not need swords.

You get a sword and you get a sword! EVERYBODY GETS A SWORD! Apparently, there will be a big threat to Krakoa, so ten mutants are going to be gifted with mystical swords to fight against this threat. Damn, look at all dem swords.

And sure enough, three of the people I mentioned all get swords.

I stand by my statement with Logan, but I admit, the energy swords for Storm and Cyclops look cool.

You can't go wrong with energy blades.

but thats more than 10 swords. although a few already existed I think gorgan has godkiller, and logan has muramasa. xavier has cerebro sword, and armor and iceman are just using their powers.

also logan is like the biggest weeaboo in the marvel universe and will never turn down a chance to use a katana if offered.

We don't actually know which people get swords — since there are more than ten people in that image, I assume it's just a general "X-Men with swords" image.

By the way, the name of the crossover is actually pronounced "Ten of Swords," as in the Ten of Swords.

but why does Logan need Swords?

I think that's the sword that can negate healing factor, the one he used to kill Sabertooth.

The Muramasa Blade. Technically, it can't be the Muramasa Blade, because of the Orphans of X melted it down and turned it into bullets. However, a new one might have been forged when Muramasa made the Muramasa Armor for Laura.

Gail Simone had some thoughts on X-Men that are...interesting in the grand scheme of the health of the comic industry. She also throws some shade at My Hero Academia as well.

Long story short, her theory is the de-emphasis on X-books (once Fox got the movie rights) really hurt the comic industry as a whole given their massive bubble of success. Furthermore, the people who read those books were probably the easiest to convert into manga readers. Nowadays, Academia is for the average reader what X-Men was in the 80’s and 90’s.

Well since Marvel is now pumping out X-Books, here's hoping they get some of those sales back.

Not sure where the shade throwing was at, it looked like she was talking about manga in general rather than MHA.

[up]She mentions at one point several characters from the series would be indistinguishable from X-Men characters.

And a lot of the comments pretty much say “Yeah, I left comics for manga and I love MHA.”

That's not really throwing shade though.

Sure she made the compairson but there wasn't really any mockery in it.

[up]Maybe I am reading too much into it, as I’m want to do. I feel like the conclusion is “if X-Men remained popular, the reading public wouldn’t have needed My Hero Academia”.

I hate to be reminded of this, but Bill Marville Jemas wrote in his last issue of that series (the guidelines for the failed Epic print) that many comics failed because they got away from the core of why the readers read it. He uses the example of Spider-Man getting married (which is its own can of worms) but I cannot help but wonder if there’s a kernel of truth there. If the Krakoa cult and the Mutant Nation has gotten too far from the core of why people read X-Books and the reverse switch will need to be flung whenever the MCU makes an X-Men movie.

I don't know how widely applicable it is, but it's why I'm not reading any X-Men books right now.

It's an interesting idea. That they mistakenly stumbled across a manga formula well before it was really a thing, with the super powered teens at school concept.

Supernatural battle school manga (or just a normal school with supernatural stuff happening at it) among other things were a big manga thing...or are.

I don't know why Marvel or DC have never been able to make a smash hit out of "school for superheroes" because it feels like the most no-brainer escapist fantasy for kids you could possibly have in a genre that almost entirely caters to them.

Maybe Hero Aca really did just punk the Big Two.

And then as soon as it ended they all got thrown into a meat grinder because "dystopia YA" was a thing for a hot minute.
